Hello sowa616, never did find a cure for it, now only use this radio in my van where it just about sounds ok, also have a intek h-520 plus - the squelch is ok on this radio however its very bassy - never buying anymore intek! going to stick with the old radios 'Uniden' and also got a Binatone 5 star again a brilliant radio even though they are about 30 years old.
i have a intek m-550 my squelch sounds very harsh i cant seem to crank it up too much or it cuts out signals coming in at like 7 pounds yet if i crank it down i have noise on all the time. the clunking i which i think your reffering too is same on mine its horrid! :( and im assuming theres not much you can do about it?
I did wonder if other Inteks suffered with this annoying problem, cant win really turn the squelch down and listen to that BT home hub (BPL) noise or turn the squelch up and get the popping noise instead lol. Never had any of these problems 20 years ago! Still onwards and upwards.

The 'clunk' on the squelch is a common problem on the Inteks. My Intek 490 has the same problem. Using an external speaker reduced the clunk on mine.
