  • I have respect for all drummers but this kind of drumming, incorporating your whole body, is just amazing! The talent these people have is beyond awesome. I love listening and watching Taiko drummers.

  • The song is called Utsu Hachijo and is based on two traditional styles (rhythms from Iwami Kagura/Jingi Daiko & Miyake) mixed with modern improvisation sections. The theme of the song is supposed to tell a story about a samurai named Ukita Hideie who was banished to the island of Hachijo as a political prisoner. The flute used in this piece is shinobue. The bokuto used as bachi in this piece were partly used for dramatic effect and are not commonly used by many taiko groups or players.

  • is it normal to feel like a warrior when listening to this? just wonderin

  • The badassery is indescribable

  • Damn nothing compares to hearing taiko drums in person...

  • @GunsmythFrog

agreed! although i'd say it's as much "getting vibrated/thundered upon by" as "hearing"

  • That "Dark Japanese Man" is Kelvin Underwood. He was a member of Ondekoza from 1994-1998. He's now with On Ensemble, a contemporary taiko quartet based in Los Angeles.

  • nice

  • that's one dark Japanese man hahahahha

  • Super strong music you have ... I love her, unfortunately it is not easy here dranzukommen to the music. Me it longs total, according to the cultural treasures of Japan. I think my soul was living in Japan!

  • Anyone know the history on the use of the bokken-like bachi?

  • 7:18!!!!!!!! Nice.

  • i love this kind of sounds. i love japanese music.

  • Oh yeah, and the video and audio on the master recording are not 100% synched up owing to how and why the video was digitally re-mastered as it was being produced.

We played the full concert 3 times that day. One full dress rehearsal, one recording, and one live concert (during a 2-week run of concerts). Video from the live performance and the afternoon session were used (for close-up shots, etc.). Many sections of the piece are freely improvised and there were other technical difficulties.

  • @tttaiko Can you recommend any other japanese songs that have fast drumming in it, almost like a song for a fight scene in a movie?

  • Utsu Hachijo. Za Ondekoza - Ondekoza Live'95 under the direction of Den Tagaysu.

Tateishi Ringtaro & Kelvin Underwood on okedo sets; Inoue Kohei on shinobue; solos Takakubo Yasuko, Nakashima Akio, Inoue Ryohei; shime daiko from stage left Marco Lienhard - Yamamoto Shigeru -Yamaguchi Akira.

I'm on atarigane (the "bowl") and I do actually get to solo on the miya-daiko in miyake but this video cuts off before I play. Unseen but playing large okedo are Iwata Taro, Yokoyama Yoko & Kiuchi Shinako.

  • I recognize the woman leading this piece. Her name is Yasuko Takakubo and she is one of the finest female taiko players in all of Japan, bar none. Having ceded leadership of Ondekoza and formed her own group within the last ten years, she still maintains ties with Ondekoza. There is a black American in this video; you will see him if you watch closely. His name is Kelvin Underwood. I have personally met him on several occasions.

  • i like Japanese music it's to historical

  • The song they're playing is called ""Miyake" (especially the part after 5:30 or so with the woman playing sideways). It's the most famous traditional taiko song in Japan. You hear it everywhere.

  • thx for posting but please sync the vid to the audio, i see them drumming and half a second later i hear the beat..

  • lol, its like a game glitch

  • Yes, this is Za Ondekoza. Music is generally based on the same repetoire, but they have a lot of their own material much different then Kodo, and likewise.

  • 5:29 dude is thinking, "this sucks... I gottat play a fucking bowl.... Everyone else gets big ass drums and I get a fucking bowl..." HA!

    Cool vid. I'll give it a solid 5. :)

  • anyone know the title?

  • Um, no It's Ondekoza. The two groups were originally one if I remember correctly, hence the similar attire. But the music is VERY different.

  • ninja feel

  • this is KODO

  • drum on~

  • I like the video, which seems like the sounds from the ancient spirit!

  • @kimino39 I don't know what you said but it sounded good.

  • hallo

  • I like that pure-Japanese music/dress style.
