What happens if the peg won't stay in place? I got it to the correct intonation of A but when I released my fingers the peg just slipped and went back to the lowest note on the string. Help!
what happens if the peg wont stay in place? when i tried to tune with the peg there was too much pressure on the string and they popped out. are my strings too old? ive had them for about 2 years
@iVxPredator It can be pretty boring! But if you go to a luthier he will make you it alot easier! Also there are new pegs that make so easy to tune it, just like a fine tuner (watch?v=3ANq51XhgIE).
I use the method where you turn it a little higher then go back to playing, the way you called "silly", when trying your method I broke four strings. It works for me ;). This is a very helpful video, the best one on tuning on youtube.
Thank you! This is much better than the other videos, where they discuss tuning the pegs without actually showing you how to do so. Kudos for the great vid!
@magicichigo Rarely, there is a small crack somewhere in the peg box and then if you use too much pressure, it can crack even more. I've never heard of anyone breaking the neck though. Disasters like that usually only happen when the instrument is dropped. If you are having to use more force than you can muster comfortably, then you probably need to have the pegs re-fit. The main thing is to squeeze/push the peg into the scroll before you try and turn it.
I have a question. Today, I tried to tune with the pegs. I loosened the peg to a vertical position and pushed in and turned. Now when I turn it, I feel alot of pressure and If I turn harder it seems it will break. If I let go it turns back and loosens again.
@FallenXplict Your peg may need a little bit of compound to help it turn when it's pushed in. One thing you can try is to take the peg out, get a pencil and "scribble" graphite all around the part that comes into contact with the peg box. That will help it turn when pegs are too "sticky".
I don't play the violin, but I do play a little guitar (and piano). How do know where to press? You "guess" + "experience"? Do this mean that different people playing the same violin will produce different sound?
You mean with your left hand on the fingerboard? Beginners usually have thin strips of tape to help them learn where the finger placements are. With practice, you automatically know where the notes are. Of course, occasionally you will put the finger in the wrong place, so the player still has to listen and adjust finger placement occasionally.
I watched you using a tuner/ metr that produces a violin sound. Can u tell which brand that is ? Do u recommend certain violin for adult begginers ?

@ambition415 remove the peg and rub a little chalk or pastel onto the thread, this will give the the peg friction, and stop it from slipping

@ambition415 Sorry but i dont take orders from the mundane.
Can you please explain to me why you felt so driven to make such a condescending, pompous comment against a fairly inoffensive light hearted quip?

Someone please respond. I'm thinking about getting a violin with only a E String Fine tuner. Is tuning with the pegs really that hard?
