I don't think that Eisenhower, Patton or MacArthur ever lived down this shameful deed. As pointed out the President did not want this, however, it was not the first time that MacArthur made his own judgement and overode the President. MacArthur was good and bad, like most of us. His general attitude towards Japan after the war was very good. The US could have treated them much more harshly, leaving an embittered foe. I think MacArthur prevented that.

The first reason why this is sad is because they didn't make get their benefits until 1945. Then they camped out in dirty, unsanitary, campsites, and they had to rely on the donations of other governments, private citizens, churches to feed their families. This was the Great Depression, nobody had any jobs, but these men: fought for our country, and they got nothing in return. What a disgace to our nation. Then, our own military turns against our own veterans. I'm 14, and i realize this. Sad.

They were very clean and cleaned up after themselves, they were NOT racist and integrated black people in their demands for the measly 1000.00 the Government owed then for fighting, and they needed it to feed their families. President Hoover was embarrassed and sent the soldiers after them with TANKS and killed two of the Vet's and injured many others out of embarrassment, then went to sleep as they burned. This movement brought about the GI Bill.

And he outranked MacArthur too. There is actually a picture of Eisenhower, Patton, and MacArthur all standing at the Bonus Army's camp after the action.

McArthur by ignoring Presidential orders not to cross the bridge into the main camp.... disobeyed the direct orders of the President! He should have been relieved of command and busted down to private for his arrogance. Historians often overlook that McArthur's Philippine defensive strategy was greatly flawed which contributed to the earl Japanese success in the Pacific. His arrogance with President Truman finally brought his downfall !

When things got out of hand by MacArthur's troops President Hoover ordered the Army assault stopped, however, Gen. MacArthur-feeling this free-speech exercise was a Communist attempt at overthrowing the U.S. Government-ignored the President and ordered a new attack. Hundreds of veterans and members of their families were injured, several were killed. He should have been relieved of duty for disobeying his commander in chief, court-martialed and sent to Leavenworth for life or better yet hanging

Hoover simply asked the Army to quell a "Bonus Army" protest that had gotten out of hand earlier that day. Hoover used the Army because he believed that active duty troops would not act violently toward veterans. The order to rout the Bonus Army and destroy the shanty town came from Gen. Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur was reassigned to the Philippines following this incident but he was never publicly reprimanded by Hoover, which is why many thought that Hoover himself ordered the attack.
