in a free market system, even natural monopoly industries can potentially be subject to competition. if they don't sufficiently serve the consumer, someone can still enter. out of curiousity, can you think of any examples in which privatized natural monopolies went horribly wrong in the absence of regulation?
A free-market loving libertarian like myself gets really annoyed that natural monopolies exist.
We probably should have just kept these monopolistic companies state-owned. Privatising and super-regulating almost defeats the point.
