  • Where was I when this came out???

oh, wait...I was 1. hell of a good thing there is Youtube to save me from the shit music that plagues teenagers today.

  • The first time my mate played me this in the mid nineties i was on illicit sweets and it blew me away. I went out the next day and bought it. Never been affected quite like that since. BRILLIANT !!!

  • despite the quality I found my new favorite song

  • @Bjorkfilia Eh. Like all things, it passed.

  • @XianAnalysand Oft times limited text space forces one to be more creative.

  • this song just changed everything for me the same way people talk about "nevermind"

  • Absolutely the greastest recovery track of all time. I played this once at a scooter run full of soul and ska fans and 5 people came up to me after and asked for the details. Pure class that will always remind me of a special period of my life

  • Music doesn't touch me anymore this way.

  • Spent the best part of a year in London, wandering around London listening to this on my walkman! F*ck it brings back some memories...beautiful track

  • Le magnifique! Bravo! Beautiful! A fucking great piece of art, it really moves me!

  • I felt deeply connected to this song when I was alone in my room thinking about the bleak future that has been awaiting for me. Right now I'm not so alone but now and then I put this on to remind me of more self-conscious and deeper myself.

  • 11 people dont get phone sex to see them through the emptiness of thier 501's

  • Thumbs up if you first heard this song on the '94 Wax Trax "Afterburn" Sampler. : )

  • @Niven42 i signed in just to upvote this. that was a truly epic compilation; i can't tell you how much time i spent lost in my own head listening to it!

  • You should have eased up on the limiter. It was limited enough in the original song. Thank you for posting it! Cheers!

  • Who pressed "dislike"!?!?!? I WILL FIGHT YOU!!!!

  • Great progressive house track! I have used it on a few of my mixes

  • what a fucking song!! still remember darren emerson playing this @ the END . LONDON

  • @nervicspermic dont forget Leftism

  • Although I had many "lost weekends" during the mid nineties, this track reminds me of recovering at home afterwards, still tingley, and melancholy had its own kind of bliss. BACK TO MINE !!!!!

  • @princessprojector you put that feeling into words perfectly

  • @princessprojector that about sums it up entirely love....

  • what an era it was!i'll never forget!

  • it cannot be said that electronic music has no soul.

  • This tune is epic.

  • I love this song!

  • I remember being in a club in London at 5 in the morning and the DJ played Dirty Epic. Everyone was asking the DJ who it was by. Now everyone knows who Underworld are. Great tune. Brings back great memories of old skool clubbing in London. Go out on Friday come home on Sunday.

  • @northernsoul44 . Funny I am a northern souler based in london area and got into this when it came out. its funny if you listed to the beginning the dance beats are almost 4 x4 . wicked tune

  • @saddamsalaugh Thanks, I will have a listen. Keep the faith !!

  • The lyrics rock.Buffalo thunder,Christ on crutches.Karl,s the man when it comes to complimenting the tune and embellishing it with his poetic narrations.Personal fave has gotta be Juanita, tunes bliss and the lyrics take you on the journey. Underworld, guys are gods...D

  • here comes christ on crutches........... what a line...

my favorite underworld tune... by far....

  • Anybody else discover this band because of WaxTrax '94 sampler?

Trainspotting was telling everybody else what was up,.

  • Why were so many awesome songs made when I was still in nappies or primary school?

  • @snowmuzzle shut the fuck up!

  • Can we stop the train? I need to get back to the 90s!

  • Aas I know story for this song..lyrics are actually interviwes maedn with lunatics in mental hospital.

  • Aas I know story for this song..lyrics are actually interviwes maedn with lunatics in mental hospital.

  • Driving across the city on the freeway late at night, in the winter, in the rain, the idea of going to a club thoroughly unappealing, grab the mix tape with this track queued up, the windshield wiper temp starts to match the beat...becomes hypnotic...you think about what you should have said when she called you an asshole and slammed the door, you turn it over in your mind like a sharp cornered cube of lead, but you never want the night or the sensation to end or give way to a tepid dawn...

  • @thedungeondelver nicely put.

  • @thedungeondelver nicely put. Very recognizable.

  • @thedungeondelver There were MANY nights of my life spent listening to this track hoping the night would never end.

  • @thedungeondelver I'd love to drive on the freeway late at night to this... it'd be amazing... i'm gonna go do that.

  • @Jackmiles2006 Do it! Was great back in the 90s, coming down from a night of clubbing with this playing in the car

  • @thedungeondelver

One of the best things I've read on youtube, and perfect for this track

  • classic

  • Still one of their best track. Good old times ^^

  • @klioy7000 Amen to that!

  • The thing with this is it's just layer upon layer of subtlety changing synths and keyboards building to a crescendo....simple genius and easily there most well crafted song...i could listen to this till i die:) its a muscial gem...here comes christ on crutches!!

  • i bought Dubnobasswithmyheadman when it was first released and to me Dirty Epic was the best track on the album .... its a shame they've not made anything like it since

  • It's about unemployment in the mid-90's in England. There were only 5 channels on the telly then, and that's if you were lucky. Most of us only had 4. And even those showed only junk late at night when you're sitting there trying to stave off the boredom, but "all i could see was Doris Day" living in the nighttime and sleeping in the day because "the off peak electricity" was cheaper (2.5p per kW/h instead of 7.5p) and elecricity was expensive on a girocheque ...

So calm down It's not blasphemy

  • @canis65536 What a load of cobblers. Listen to the song again!

  • @Bendy2K Okay, i'm listening. What's your take on it?

  • @canis65536 Mate, it's about his relationship breaking down with his GF "You never touch my anymore this way". This is because he "was too busy with my head" (even though she asked him to call her "Wet trampoline" - you figure that one out!) on account of having a sexual encounter "with another man". So now, he's troubled by being "So dirty - the light, it blinds my eyes". He's also a total peeping Tom, tapping other people's phonelines for sexual pleasure, as in "I get my kicks on channel 6."

  • @Bendy2K "Connector in - receiver out" - another description of tapping phonelines. It's all in there! About as poetic as poetry gets, my man.

  • this song should be illegal

    it gets you high

  • brilliant!

  • Always on in the Jag, love driving to this album.

  • Wow, taken back. Love time travel :)

  • karl's 'stream of consciousness' lyrics can be quite random..'call me wet trampoline she said today' anyone??..but they fit great into this epic track....

  • I only hear drez cowgirl, born slippy and burnout. This tune is not so bad. At listen is fuckin better than the trash musicians we have right now.

  • @19GirlBad there's plenty of good music coming out now; you just have to find it.

  • Haven't listened to this in a while. When I saw that it was 10 mins long I wondered if I liked it enough to listen to the whole thing. Guess what? Of course I liked it enough!

  • immerse me in this forever! 10mins of sheer bliss!

  • immerse me in this forever!

  • Magic dream!!! I love it..

  • an image of Christ on crutches is not blasphemous IMHO. it's stream of consciousness - free your mind.

  • This is one of the best songs i have ever heard in my life !

What a lovely sound, this song gives me a wonderful feeling when i hear it. It makes me feel so high and happy, im in absolute heaven when i listen to it.

Dirty Epic is 100% pure genius. This song has not dated and still sounds absolutely outstanding 17 years after it was made.

You cant buy 'Dubnobasswithmyheadman' anymore as the record company have deleted it. You should be ASHAMED !

Im so glad i have this seminal album.

  • Epic indeed.

  • My favourite!!! <3

  • The more I listen the more I like it.

  • I really loved this song, and used to listen to it when I was younger, but had no idea who it was. Today after listening to this song, I dare say it is blasphemous. I dunno if I can listen to it again. Boo. I would love the instrumental version to this song w/out the words.

  • @cazman35 let's call the inquisitor, see what he has to say about it.

  • @cazman35 "I feel so shaken in my faith, here comes Christ on crutches." Jesus' image is weakened by his weakened faith. Haven't you ever had your faith shaken? Isn't Christ on crutches a good metaphor for that? Not blasphemy. Plus it's a reference to the curse "Christ on a crutch!"

  • driving across the desert at night in August, as an Arizona monsoon thunderstorm flashes in the distance...

  • "Here comes christ on crutches..."

    Epic song

  • This is the clip for Dirty Epic that came from the Underworld video compilation called "footwear repairs by craftsmen at competitive prices" .. at least I think that's what the video was called. I still have it on VHS. I need to rip it and upload the whole thing to Youtube.

  • SO ORGAMIK....

  • this song will remain fresh and beautiful even in 2050!!!this man is a genius!!

  • Youtube is like any other media these days... so why are they exempt from attaching a publish date? Every video on youtube should come with a date on which a clip was made, not posted. I don't understand that. Surely there are copyright laws to this effect somewhere too

  • Base on youtube video, unheard of, nicely uploaded sir.

  • if you L<3VE Underworld visit my page i'm uploading rare and unreleased tracks!

  • "I get more kicks on Channel 6."

  • @Orbital199 Couldn't have said it better. It's good to see some great people out there.

  • magique, magnifique les mots ne sont pas assez puissant pour decrire ce que je ressent quand j ecoute Dirty Epic.

  • It's so refreshing to read comments from thoughtful people around the world who share a connection to beautiful pieces of art such as this. Typically this song projects a feeling of other worldly loneliness for me, but reading your posts makes me feel connected to the world in a new way. Thanks to everyone who feels deeply affected by music like this.

  • I dont want to take away from your experience because your feelings are fair enough i spose. But aren't those feelings of loneliness and connection somewhat contradictory? I liked your comment, I thought about what you said here. Seems to me that all music has the potential to expose emotions, but don't confuse nostalgia with some pragmatic tool to enhance your and others' humanity. There's a fine line between appreciation and being a hippie!!

  • @Pigroota There's also a fine line between making a point, and being a dick. Have a lovely day.

  • @Orbital199 Spoken without an ounce of hypocrisy

  • @Pigroota Everyone is a hypocrite.

  • @Orbital199 Spoken like a true hippie!! LoL. C'mon dude, just jokes, lighten up

  • @Pigroota It's 'dudette', thank you...now back to my hand drums and sunflower seeds...

  • @Orbital199

My itunes playcount for this song is wait for it............... 820. which means i have spent aproximately 8200 minutes, or nearly 6 full days, listening to this amazing piece of music.

    Time well spent.

  • so atmospheric....takes you somewhere but i cant place exactly where...u know the point where everyones gone home on a late saturday night...its just before the sun comes up...still darkish....litter blowing around on the street...i feel so dirty..

  • first heard this song last year after listening to a bunch of albums i had on my mp3 player from someone else. its just amazing. forgot about it again until the other day and since then ive listened to it continually

  • "Here comes Christ on crutches!"

  • I loved reading all the prior comments, it is great to see people around the planet so impacted by this work of art as I am.

Dirty Epic is deeply and profoundly 'mine' and at once it is 'our'.

thanks for making my love of this song richer

  • so many late nights while growing up in south london

  • cabalgando sobre los ritmos sintèticos!!!!!!!!!!

  • And the light it burns my eyes. And I feel dirty

And the light it burns my eyes, And I feel so shaken in my faith.

    Here comes Christ on crutches.

And there comes another God, Here comes another God

Like a Buffalo Thunder, With a smell of sugar, with a velvet tongue and designer voodoo.

But i got phone sex to see me through the emptiness in my 501's....... Fukkin Superb

  • I get my kicks on channel 6, The light it burns my eyes.

And I feel so dirty, Here comes Christ on cruthes

  • gut!!!!

  • Yeah, man... that's the original. I remember when that song came out, it absolutely floored me. Awesome post.

  • this is the original. i have the vhs tape with it that came out in the 90's. classic!

  • 501s refers to the Levis brand of men's jeans, the verse clearly alludes to the lead singer's home sexuality "here comes another god like a buffalo thunder with a smell of sugar and a velvet tongue and designer voodoo..."

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutely brilliant.. Will always be so

  • Desde Chile un fan Underworld los papitos de la electronica!! :-)

  • amazing! takes me back 16 years... givin me the goosebump!

  • And also I want to know which rhymes capture sexual frustration the most as it is unclear to me. Apart from ..´I was too busy with my hand´..Please be helpful.

  • @UJ96LFA - and his persecution "...and my teeth stuffed back in my head"..if you listen to the song in this context, the singer is clearly speaking to his sexual frustrations, his girlfriend's sexual frustration, his feelings of guilt for feeling the way he feels, probably steaming from a catholic upbringing - hence Jesus in the lyrics. his exual release, and his coming to terms with his sexuality...

  • Please can anyone expound the term ´501s´ and ´I get my kicks on channel six´?

  • @UJ96LFA ...getting your kicks on any channel other than the normal fare of mainstream television, in the lyrics case, and mainly to stay in the context of the song, the singer refers to self masturbation watching after hours television...

  • @UJ96LFA getting your kicks on any channel other than the normal fare of mainstream television, in the lyrics case, and mainly to stay in the context of the song, the singer refers to self masturbation watching after hours television...

  • Alot of stream of conciousness type bull would assume that Underworld, does a bit of Europe for us American chaps, eh mate... But I think it be the other way around my friend... We be giving the good light onto our brothers to the east again... I'm talkin' bout global peace! And chervil...

  • i get my kicks on channel six...

  • me too. XD

  • The confusion of the E generation which let a lot of inner repression out ! Summer of '88 still raving

  • there is a comfortable dark meloncholic feel to this album which the tracks are arranged perfectly ,not really all thet gritty, just a smooth dark seduction love it glad i refound this after 10yrs

  • @nolderine

such a sneaky bad ass album.

  • Awesome track. Sexual frustration has never been better expressed ...

  • a big favorite!!

    :)))

  • back to it i say -what year 92/93

  • i remember i downloaded this song on christmas eve in 2007 , i love this song, it kinda makes me wanna fuck my girl in a dirty epic way haha

  • @ArkhanTheBlack1

haha it's all good bro, i personally think there is a bit more going on with this tune!

  • Dont get me wrong i really love this track. Best track on dubnobass & it brings back fond memories but listening to the lyrics, you gotta admit, that seems to be the underlying & ongoing theme. A few examples:"You let me in through the backdoor" "never touch me any more this way(she said)" "i was too busy with my hand" "I got phonesex to see me thru the empiness in my 501s" Innuendo me thinks! Im not entirely sure what "Christ on crutches" is referring to tho.

  • top tune indeed love the ambience, never was that aware of the anal innuenndo's till you brought it to my attention though. Will try and seduce the mrs with this I think!

  • I liked "cowgirl" & 'mmm skyscraper, I love you" off this album too. Secondtoughestintheinfants had some good tracks on too, namely "pearls girl" & "Juanita". The "dark&long" and "rez" EP's had some good stuff on them.1992-1998 were (in my humble opinion) their finest years.

  • true man, all about the five knuckle shuffle, my sis thinks it's about closet homos? "i wanna be confused with another man" was her explanation. an't say I agree. I'm sure I worked out what "christ on crutches" was about when I was in a heightened state of awareness ;) but I forget it now, hahaaaaa

  • @jonerific: Thanks man. I got a bit of flak here for pointing that out. Glad someone else has listened to & understands the lyrics!

  • @ArkhanTheBlack1 you forgot... "you left me confused, I will not be confused", "with another man"

  • Hey people, listen to the fuckin lyrics before you "thumbs-down" me!

  • @ArkhanTheBlack1

Ha ha! What will they say about "skyscraper I love you" ?!

  • well, this track has just become my current soundtrack. fits in any mood, so trippy... Music: purrfect, Lyrics: purrfect, Video: Purrfect.

  • best used album purchase ever

i can't believe somebody sold this back to Zia...flove this album, especially this track and "Dark and Long"

  • What a song!!!

Does anyone else get a real powerful sense of sensual energy from this?

  • here comes another god, like a buffalo thunder, with a smell of shiver, and a velvet tongue, and designer voodoo, I got phonesex to see me through the emptiness in my 501's ...

  • Is Karl singing about cherry bakewells on this track? I can't be sure. Love it in any case :D

  • great

  • Top shelf track.

  • OMG.. ICRYING WITH THIS SONG..!!

sweet in winter sweet in rain. shke well before use she said.

you never touch me anymore this way. connector in. receiver out you let me in thorough the back door.

ride the sainted rhythms on the modnight train to romford. ride teh sainted rhythms. ......etc.

  • Loving underworld! Found this amazing competition too!
