I never thought that Green Lantern would do well on the big screen because there is to much silly stuff in the comics. I think this is the best Green Lantern movie they could of made, the reason I think people hate it so much is because it doesn't do anything special or awesome, but I liked it for what it was.

They changed alot with Green Lantern. Parallax was not a guardian who was poisoned by fear. Ryan Reynolds had the aspects to play Hal Jordan but not the look. Or even the voice as superheroes I think should have pretty strong voices. Ryan Reynolds is like he's high all the time. The costumes and rings and their lanterns should have looked more like the comics. Hal wore white gloves and the green in the costume was way to bright.

i thought the film was acceptable overall when you think that there so much plot and backstory to all of it that they really didnt have time, i can understand that they'd want to get the ground work for paralax done quickly so the next film can be awesome blackest night related stuff, but they should have had a minor villain and focus more on the set up of characters etc.

By the way, history lesson for you. Even IF they made a movie with John Stewart, it'd be impossible without including Hal Jordan because Hal Jordan chose him to be his fill-in or whatever when he couldn't fulfill his duties. Stop basing it on the Justice League Cartoon. I like Hal more anyway. But if we wanna be MORE accurate, even Hal was not THE first Green Lantern. I watched this film and Thor on the same night, and noticed how similar they were. Mythical beings (Asgardians/Green Lanterns and Guardians) on a planet/realm (Asgard/Os) facing an ancient evil (Frost Giants/Parallax) and a traitor among the ranks (Loki/Hammond). A charm that granted power to the worthiest hero to be found. I think I liked Thor a little better because it's concise and Loki was interesting. The most impressive aspect of Green Lantern was the makeup effects for Sinestro.
The best thing I can tell you is that the Hal Jordan Green Lantern is like the Captain America of DC Universe as far as his personality goes. Ryan Reynolds being the cocky douchebag he always is does not fit the Green Lantern. If anything, he should have been The Flash. The movie is majority CGI and I can't stand it.
The villain was really lame. The doctor wasn't too bad, and Paralax was rather threatening, but once the final showdown started, he lost a lot of his scaryness and was defeated in a way that any of the other Greenlanterns could have done, but there was no push to demonstrate that Hal was more capable of thinking it up or anything.
Plus, why would they make a yellow ring? They had already established that the GUARDIANS couldn't control it, and so they're going to have one of the lanterns try?
I just think it was SO boring! Mostly because they spend so little time with the green lanterns, there is like 1 minute of hal training, and their on oa for like 5 minutes! seriously!
I just finished watching this movie, I didn't like it. I wanted to, but I just couldn't. What bothered me the most was the storytelling, it was just so awfully done and brought on in very little amounts. It's like the most important part of a movie was sacrificed for the sake of special effects, which were some of the best I've ever seen I'll give it that.
What I didn't like was how it honestly didn't feel like it was building up to anything. At least for me. Defeating Parralax was sweet but it didn't really feel like a payoff for some reason.
I thought the movie was great. It had a perfect pace it wasnt drug out with too much back story of the other characters. I thought the movie showed enough of the characters to be remembered.
Absolutely hated the movie. How Parallax died was a massive plot hole for me (why the hell didn't anyone try that before?) and almost none of the characters really did anything except for Hal. Sinestro's character didn't develop at all during the movie (it's a bit hard to when you're barely on screen) so that's probably going to hurt the sequel, if they make one and one with Sinestro as the antagonist.
Is "The Green Lantern" REALLY that bad? I typically share the same views with critics considering I'm very anal about the kind of films that I like. As long as the plot/direction/characters/script is decent, to me, the film is sufficient enough. Heard the 3D was abysmal.
I agree Green Lantern wasn't bad but it wasn't very good too. It was predictable, too CGI dependent and the plot along with the editing was so poor that it was a shame. But at the end the it was okay (his suit looked way better than in the trailer) and I had a fun time watching it.
This movie was bad. Sorry. One of the worst videos in 2011 in my opinion. I would start to point out, that I do not know any Green Lantern lore other then Justice League.
My biggest problem with this movie was Ryan Reynolds. He's an annoying douche, even though he's supposed to do it, I disliked this so much it ruined most of the movie. I'd like to have seen more from the Green Lantern universe rather than him having fun with it.
I'd totally geek out if you reviewed the DC animated Green Lantern : First Flight. It's amazing and I wish the real movie had been more like it. It spends more time on OA and more time on Sinestro and why he turns evil. The animation is amazing, even Aeon Fluxian in some parts, which is crazy fantastic to see that associated with Green lantern.
@ignominni Think about it. This was an origins movie. The second movie will show sinestro doing his evil thing. After the credits of the first movie had him put the yellow ring on, so we know he will be doing something evil in the next movie. You have to understand this movie was an origins on green lantern. I don't know if you have noticed but in this movie it did explain why he turned evil, he turned evil so he could have more power to defend the core. Just like the yellow blob guy.

Didn't like it - Han was dick in this,in comics he take chances and all that, he smashed airplane, he's hotheaded, but he's a good guy, with moral of Superman or Batman - here he forgets birthdays, put other pilot in risk, fly home after first failure on Oa...) Blake Lively... Oh my God, she is bad in this movie. I haven't seen her in anything else, so I can't tell if she's good actress, but she is baad in this... CGI reminded me of SW prequels, didn't like it. Villains meh...

@Lonewolfjedi Not quite. Siniestro in the comics was really important to Hal Jordan while in here he appears for like 10 minutes overall, he also becomes evil for nothing. Not to mention Parallax in the comics is not a flart with a face and they skipped when he turned Hal Jordan insane.
I didn't like it. To me, it seemed like nothing more than a light and sound show with underdeveloped characters and plotholes I could drive a semi through.
As for basic execution of the movie, it was like twilight. Great cast, but sometimes even a great cast can't save a shitty plot.

Am I the only one who thinks First Flight would've been a ten times better live action Green Lantern film than this travesty? It really disappoints me that DC can create awesome animated direct-to-dvd movies, but when it comes to Live Action, they constantly drop the ball. I don't get it. I mean, if that's the way it's gunna be then screw making the animated D2DVDs, just use the exact same storyboard, and tweak the script to fit a live action film, and there you go, instant success!

Theres was nothing special about this movie at all. It's so painfully average it's just another superhero movie, nothing new, same formula, it sucked. Captain America was the best superhero movie of the summer.
my main complaint was how under developed the characters were and they left out that Sinestro is the epitemy of evil and corruption and that he is GL's Lex Luthor...other than that i had a good time watching it
Parallax should have been a giant pointy Demon, who should have looked like Cho'Gath from League of legends crossed with a piranha and a cockroach. Instead, he looked like a giant turd :( I enjoyed the movie and thought it was good, but the standard has been set so high with movies like Thor and Cap, that the movie simply wasn't good enough!
Great effects, good dialog, terrible side characters ....I was rooting for the big-head-professor toward his characters end though .....that ...is the mark of a failed movie .....do not make me think that if the villian could get laid the world would be safe but they're all too busy being badly treated by dooch-bags ...1.5 / 5.
The story ruined this for me. They have years of comic book stories that are amazing and this is the result? I'm sorry but what the fuck did they do to parallax. He was meant to be trapped in the green lantern power battery for years and is the living embodiment of fear eventually being released by accident and destroying the corps. They ignored all of this and just made him a tentacle monster thing joined to a guardian at the start? wtf? It was a good film but it could have been a lot better.
Anyone notice that Abin Sur's ship look like Slave 01 (Jango Fett's ship) and The same guy who did the voice of Jango Fett in the game Star Wars Bounty Hunter, did the voice of Abin Sur. I thought that was a little weird.
and this isnt the end of it, Green Lantern is a likely nominee for several razzies this year... it's gonna be humiliating for Martin Campell and Ryan Reynolds... of course they are not gonna be present.
@funnguns Razzies? Green Lantern was far from an awful film. Martin Campbell did a good job with what was given to him by FOUR writers, as did Reynolds. Heck, EVEN Blake Likely did a good job (She's a fine actress). The visuals were stunning, as was the makeup, acting was no problem thanks to a solid cast, the art direction was inspired, and the passion could be seen throughout. The only Razzie it could be nominated for is Worst Screenplay, but I don't see it being nominated for anything else.
i think that most people that hated it, watched it in 3d. I enjoyed the movie even tough i think the animated movie "Green Lantern - First Flight" is better. But hey im the guy who thinks "Batman Mask of the Phantasm" or "Under the Red Hood" is better than any live action adaptations of batman.

They did chose him because he was black. It's a real shame they had a chance to do a really epic black super hero (of which there are few I guess because of the time most superheroes were created) and he ended up being a fairly bland annoying character who has killed like 2 planets now. Personally I like Kyle the most but Hal should have been in the cartoon he was first and is a lot more interesting than John. Although John is still better than Guy but that really isn't hard...

Well I find expectations really change the way you judge things, because I knew nothing about Green Lantern and it was my friend who wanted to see the movie, so my thought was just like "Well CGI never fails to look boring, I'm sure I'll be amused by the visuals" and for some reason I came out of the movie hysterical, like I just saw the best movie ever. So I think it's because I wasn't expecting anything, that made me really love it. Btw that "We're all human" speach Hal makes was fantastic.

If Campbell could handle Casino Royale, its pretty obvious he could've handled this, Ryan Reynolds has already proven that he can work as a dramatic actor, and James Newton Howard, in my opinion, made a decent musical score. I was surprised that despite being the most expensive film of the summer, it was also one of the shortest. I hope people give the extended cut a chance.
For me this movie was so crap. The Green Lantern Comics are on a high from The Sinestro Corp. war. This story was like 90's superhero crap. The battles were very limited. Characters appeared and dissappeared. Hector Hammond was pointless. Parralex was pointless, and the man without fear, who wrecked a plane to prove a point spends most of his time whining about being scared and quitting his job. It took everything bad from FF42 and Superman returns and ran with it. First Half good Followup suck

They kinda tried to cramp a trilogy into one movie. They should have easily made a trilogy with the villians they had.
Part 1: Hector Hammond with also introducing Sinestro and then the end credits scene could have made a lot more sense.
Part 2: Rise of the Sinestro Corps obviously this would be a perfect prequel for Parralax the entity of fear.

I know DC wants to start their set up for JLA, but for someoene as Green Lantern they should have taken their time.

In the opening when they were telling the history of the GLC they just showed space, yeah it's not like it's a visual medium

I just finished watching this movie, I didn't like it. I wanted to, but I just couldn't. What bothered me the most was the storytelling, it was just so awfully done and brought on in very little amounts. It's like the most important part of a movie was sacrificed for the sake of special effects, which were some of the best I've ever seen I'll give it that.

What I didn't like was how it honestly didn't feel like it was building up to anything. At least for me. Defeating Parralax was sweet but it didn't really feel like a payoff for some reason.

Absolutely hated the movie. How Parallax died was a massive plot hole for me (why the hell didn't anyone try that before?) and almost none of the characters really did anything except for Hal. Sinestro's character didn't develop at all during the movie (it's a bit hard to when you're barely on screen) so that's probably going to hurt the sequel, if they make one and one with Sinestro as the antagonist.

Is "The Green Lantern" REALLY that bad? I typically share the same views with critics considering I'm very anal about the kind of films that I like. As long as the plot/direction/characters/script is decent, to me, the film is sufficient enough. Heard the 3D was abysmal.

I agree Green Lantern wasn't bad but it wasn't very good too. It was predictable, too CGI dependent and the plot along with the editing was so poor that it was a shame. But at the end the it was okay (his suit looked way better than in the trailer) and I had a fun time watching it.

This movie was bad. Sorry. One of the worst videos in 2011 in my opinion. I would start to point out, that I do not know any Green Lantern lore other then Justice League.
My biggest problem with this movie was Ryan Reynolds. He's an annoying douche, even though he's supposed to do it, I disliked this so much it ruined most of the movie. I'd like to have seen more from the Green Lantern universe rather than him having fun with it.

I'd totally geek out if you reviewed the DC animated Green Lantern : First Flight. It's amazing and I wish the real movie had been more like it. It spends more time on OA and more time on Sinestro and why he turns evil. The animation is amazing, even Aeon Fluxian in some parts, which is crazy fantastic to see that associated with Green lantern.

@ignominni Think about it. This was an origins movie. The second movie will show sinestro doing his evil thing. After the credits of the first movie had him put the yellow ring on, so we know he will be doing something evil in the next movie. You have to understand this movie was an origins on green lantern. I don't know if you have noticed but in this movie it did explain why he turned evil, he turned evil so he could have more power to defend the core. Just like the yellow blob guy.

He turns evil for deeply personal and I suspect very kinky/homo-erotic reasons (my opinion), but the movie does not adequately explain. Doing so as an easter egg with the credits wasn't right either and Sinestro never says. He just has this stimulated look on his face. He likes that Golden Sh...Power. I'd rather spend 8 dollars at a bat

Didn't like it - Han was dick in this,in comics he take chances and all that, he smashed airplane, he's hotheaded, but he's a good guy, with moral of Superman or Batman - here he forgets birthdays, put other pilot in risk, fly home after first failure on Oa...) Blake Lively... Oh my God, she is bad in this movie. I haven't seen her in anything else, so I can't tell if she's good actress, but she is baad in this... CGI reminded me of SW prequels, didn't like it. Villains meh...

Am I the only one who thinks First Flight would've been a ten times better live action Green Lantern film than this travesty? It really disappoints me that DC can create awesome animated direct-to-dvd movies, but when it comes to Live Action, they constantly drop the ball. I don't get it. I mean, if that's the way it's gunna be then screw making the animated D2DVDs, just use the exact same storyboard, and tweak the script to fit a live action film, and there you go, instant success!

Parallax should have been a giant pointy Demon, who should have looked like Cho'Gath from League of legends crossed with a piranha and a cockroach. Instead, he looked like a giant turd :( I enjoyed the movie and thought it was good, but the standard has been set so high with movies like Thor and Cap, that the movie simply wasn't good enough!

The story ruined this for me. They have years of comic book stories that are amazing and this is the result? I'm sorry but what the fuck did they do to parallax. He was meant to be trapped in the green lantern power battery for years and is the living embodiment of fear eventually being released by accident and destroying the corps. They ignored all of this and just made him a tentacle monster thing joined to a guardian at the start? wtf? It was a good film but it could have been a lot better.

@funnguns Razzies? Green Lantern was far from an awful film. Martin Campbell did a good job with what was given to him by FOUR writers, as did Reynolds. Heck, EVEN Blake Likely did a good job (She's a fine actress). The visuals were stunning, as was the makeup, acting was no problem thanks to a solid cast, the art direction was inspired, and the passion could be seen throughout. The only Razzie it could be nominated for is Worst Screenplay, but I don't see it being nominated for anything else.

They did chose him because he was black. It's a real shame they had a chance to do a really epic black super hero (of which there are few I guess because of the time most superheroes were created) and he ended up being a fairly bland annoying character who has killed like 2 planets now. Personally I like Kyle the most but Hal should have been in the cartoon he was first and is a lot more interesting than John. Although John is still better than Guy but that really isn't hard...

Well I find expectations really change the way you judge things, because I knew nothing about Green Lantern and it was my friend who wanted to see the movie, so my thought was just like "Well CGI never fails to look boring, I'm sure I'll be amused by the visuals" and for some reason I came out of the movie hysterical, like I just saw the best movie ever. So I think it's because I wasn't expecting anything, that made me really love it. Btw that "We're all human" speach Hal makes was fantastic.

If Campbell could handle Casino Royale, its pretty obvious he could've handled this, Ryan Reynolds has already proven that he can work as a dramatic actor, and James Newton Howard, in my opinion, made a decent musical score. I was surprised that despite being the most expensive film of the summer, it was also one of the shortest. I hope people give the extended cut a chance.

For me this movie was so crap. The Green Lantern Comics are on a high from The Sinestro Corp. war. This story was like 90's superhero crap. The battles were very limited. Characters appeared and dissappeared. Hector Hammond was pointless. Parralex was pointless, and the man without fear, who wrecked a plane to prove a point spends most of his time whining about being scared and quitting his job. It took everything bad from FF42 and Superman returns and ran with it. First Half good Followup suck
