Oh God-was this Bob's answer to "We Built this City. On Schlock and Roll" ?I caught this act around the time of this release and they were great, but THIS...this is just putrid.
Wow, that's a rare sight indeed. In the 1980s, an American act that sings about the plight of Asian immigrants, and also features Asians in the music video. But this song is still extremely corny and is just too gosh-darn earnest.
some people obviously have no life other than to piss on something a world famous musician did at one time in their career..........good luck, Mr. can't have a name without the F word it in......you must be a nice guy, should come over for thanksgiving dinner....LOL......now, go piss off and leave me the heck alone....
@tiedyekeith still, this is so unlike the dead, its like bob had a phase where he changes with the time and went fuckin 80's, idc if its bob wier, this shit sucks.
@notmefuckingname It's Bobby Weir's band. Weir goes by Bobby as well. He had a band right before this that was called the Bob Weir Band that had Cochran in it. Bobby Cochran sang on this song, but Weir sang most of their songs. What do you say when Weir sings one of their songs? The singer's name is Bob? Probably not. It's Weir and not Wier.
I could only cringe as I watched the band laying on blankets. Bob Weir watching a chinese pick up basketball game...please....this could be the sickest thing iv'e watched in a long time........
Everyone go watch the "Easy to Slip" live clip from '81 for proof that this band was actually pretty good. I don't know what's up with this - it's certainly a Bobby Cochran vehicle.
Jesus, there's so much about this video that's just plain WRONG, I don't even know where to start. I don't know what's funnier, Bob's bad hair day or the whole Bobby Does Chinatown subplot.
wish i never saw this lol :( if this is the first time you have heard of bob weir please go listen to the dead he is actually one of my favorite performers and a great singer and rythm guitar player.
Billy Cobham is one of the best drummers to ever pick up a pair of sticks. I couldn't attach the link, but do a Youtube search for "George Duke with Billy Cobham - Rush Hour" if you want to see what I mean. Maximize the screen and turn up the volume. Unbelievable stuff.
Cheese it up, Bobby. Thankfully, Brent does not appear to have been a part of this sham, having quit before they made this craptastic song/video. Imagine that, Billy Cobham reduced to playing pop music.
@hal9000lovesdaisy hey dumbass, Billy Cobham was at the top of his game when this was made, just look at all the stuff he was doing during and after this. Sure it's a cheesy video but Bobby Cochran put together a great band and Bob weir and Billy Cobham and the rest were nice enough to help.
I guess this is B and the M's "born in the usa"? Can't blame them for trying for a hit and you have to look at it in cotext of the crap that was popular at the time. It's still pretty funny though.
The comparison with JGB here hits hard, but Jerry is Dead and Bob is playing three hour shows with Furthur. Bob is a bit goofy, does not take things too seriously, adapts, and he is alive and healthy long after Jerry is gone. Who is crazy now?
The past post that caught my eye stated: "...i think we all know who wins." I suggest we consider that the flexibility Bob shows here helped keep him alive. Jerry had a drug problem that he failed to shake. Taking a chance on something new like this experiment here suggests a bit of resilience. Different capacities lead to different outcomes...and one was fatal. I oversimplify, of course, but this site is all about punchy comments.
Wow is that bad. It's so bad it's good! Like a parody. If you're not familiar with the drummer, that's Billy Cobham, one of the fastest, most powerful, and most influential drummers of all time. A monster.
Holy crap wtf was Bobby thinking!... He went through a faze..pink polo shirts, super tight mini shorts, hmm..didn't he come out on roller skates once..(cow palace?).. Bobby used to put the Disco in the Dead!
did you ever hear of something called 'spoof', 'satire' or other 'joke'? Wake your mlnds and get it already! Don't ya'll know what a tongue in cheek JOKESTER Bob is? Apparently not, lol!
This track was from the second Bobby & The Midnites LP: WHERE THE BEAT MEETS THE STREET (1984) which was an attempt to create some more contemporary sounds. Unfortunately the beat did not meet much commercial success, and the band split up soon afterwards.
This has to be the most embarrassing thing that Bob Weir has ever participated in. They were obviously going for some commercial sound that is just grating. This was the Hey Day of videos and MTV so even great performers like Weir were making garbage videos such as this.
Yes, Cocaine, Ronald Reagan, more cocaine, Mickey Mouse nostalgia for the 50's that weren't. All those pesky property taxes freed up for living the 'good life'. John Lennon and Bob Marley gone, Jerry getting smacked out and so on. Sad time to be a hippie. You had to be a punk to save your soul and sanity.
If it wasn't for that pesky Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and the Grateful Dead, the eighties (and Bob Weir) would have treated to some of the finest rock and roll the world has ever seen since Huey Lewis.
OMG !! I wonder if Billy Cobham is even remotely aware that he's in this monumentally gawd-awful video. It makes one wonder, "why do people write songs ?"
This Is Awesome! I don't care what anybody else thinks. This band inspired me to be a musician. They were a great live act to see. Full of energy and lots of fun.
LOLLOLOL That is your inspiration? I cant take guitar lesson from you anymore...even if they are free!! JK bud did you see the cockbag response I got from the guy who fantasizes about incestuous pedophilia?
Please man, please tell me you're joking. I can respect everything you said except the inspiration part. If this is your primary inspiration for making music... you are one of a kind.
Agreed! It is unfair to bash Bobby! Bob Weir, like Jerry, made the Dead what they were. What is not to love about Bob's vocals and rhythm guitar on a Jack Straw, Cassidy, Easy to Slip, Hell in a Bucket, Throwing Stones, etc? Weir is a genius!!!!!!
This vid is totally awesome! It inspires me! Now I want to go live in America! Not the America I live in now, but "this" America that the midnites sing about.
All I have to say is, the rock star gestures Bobby makes from 0:15 to 0.21 and especially 0.31-0.33 are the same f*kng annoying "look at me, I'm a rock star" gestures that drove me crazy when seeing him play with gd. Jesus Bobby, will you never realize how self-centered you are and learn it's about the spirit of the music, not about you??!
This was not a show topper by any means 80's for sure but I do remember seeing them perfom this tune at the Waterbury Ct. Palace Theatre on bass was Stanley Clarke & on Drums was Billy Cobham. As a show overall it was smokin classic hard rockin Bob Weir
I remember hearing this song at a Midnights show, and thinking to myself that this is possibly the worst song I have ever heard. How could I have been so wrong? This rocks.
