  • Anyone who doesn't like this doesn't have ears

  • I don't get how he comes up with great song after great song after great song. his technical skill combined with his endless creativity produces such genuinely good songs that he just blows my mind!

  • thats the shirt he was wearing when i saw him in concert in 2004 or the first time! Still a dedicated fan after 8 years <3

  • I soooooooooooooooooooooooo love this song ive listened to it since like 05 or 06 cant remember but its totally awesome an soothing.... JM is one of my favs

  • This song is a bitch to play though,

  • @LJordan94 Yeah, in some ways. The hardest part for me is keeping a consistent volume and intensity when switching from pick to fingers and back again.I haven't quite figured it out how to do it as smoothly as john does.

  • I love these not-well-known JCM songs!

  • Such a beautiful song, and takes an intermediate guitarist to play it. (Just learned it) Thanks John for such wonderful and beautiful music to inspire our lives...

  • one day i'm going to learn how to play this song. This song reminds me of someone special in my life.Who i will always about deeply :o)

  • Anyone know where I can find decent tabs on this....beginner and would love to learn this....one of my many favorites of his.....thx in advance!

  • I would leave my fluid in his rear orafice.

  • John Mayer changed my life

  • Man he switches from using a pick to his fingers super quick

  • reminds me the old times.. thank you :)

  • great video i loveeee john mayerrrr

  • He gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "OH MY GOD!"

  • seriously mayer how do you do make such awesome music?

  • I LOVE THIS SONG FOR SOME REASON ESPECIALLY AT THIS MOMENT..

  • Heyyy guys! this is a great video. We write and play our own songs acoustic guitar style and we have some live videos!! check us out!! Oh Capital!

  • My English Teacher preformed it at the Talent show and John Mayer came and sang wtith him !!!! OMG!

  • omg the whistling part.. so sexy.

  • He should make an album with all those unreleased Songs Sucker, Man on the Side, Hummingbird, Lifelines... (And all his great Hendrix Covers !) :)

  • this is like a john mayer underground song no one knows about

  • @NugClown kinda...but if you love john you find stuff like this!

  • just beautiful

  • So sexy! This man drives me crazy!!!!

  • I wonder what kinds of thoughts he's thinking when he plays this.

  • @mikebaas Probably the lyrics. haha just saying.

  • @mikebaas The lirycs?

  • @mikebaas Lyrics and counting rhythm lol !

  • I do not own the copyrights,

Well I just borrowed them for a while

  • love love love love love love love love love love. Love this Song. Love Him. Gorgeous and the voice of an angel, could it honestly get ANY better? <3 <3 <3 (:

  • Is he using a pick or not, bc in the verses it sounds like he is, but other times it sounds like he isn't?

  • @thebradster08 He uses a pick in the verse but not in the chorus, he switches between the two by holding the pick in the fold of his finger

  • @thebradster08 You are correct..He holds the pic in a bent finger up against his palm while finger picking. His transition, like most everything he does, is absolutely flawless. Listen at 43 seconds..he stops very briefly and does a slap. That is him throwing the pic back into position in between his finger and palm. At 1:07 he stops the finger picking and brings it back up..He sings Humming(gets the pick gripped again)Bird and starts picking again...He's UNREAL.

  • @Linester25 If you look up Message In A Bottle from Any Given Thursday and start watching his hand @ 3:10 you can see him do it. It's scary fast.

Another guitarist that tucks his pick uber fast is Reb Beach, but he folds it into his index finger rather than his (I'm guessing) his ring/middle finger. It's always interesting to watch how different players switch back and forth.

  • is he using a pick or not, bc at the beginning it seems like he is, but when he gets to the pre chorus it sounds like he's not..

  • it's beautiful ..

  • anyone who has an issue with john mayer is either not a musician, or just out right sucks as one. go away.

  • definitely one of my favorite john mayer songs. love this.

  • Ok come on let's take a break from the drama and just appreciate a true artist's talent. Sound good?

  • this is the first time i heard one of his songs

  • I love how Mayer will try to say "I've never done this before" or "This is totally improv, let's see what happens." Yeah we know there's no way you would play a show improv; so some showmanship.

  • @capoman1 Anybody who has musical talent has the ability to improv on some level, and as we all know, Mayer is an incredible musician, so put two and two together.

  • @romb20 I'm sorry, as a teacher and a musician, I can say that I DON'T present something to a group of people until i have practiced it thoroughly. I have no doubt that Mayer can improv, but I don't think he is being honest when he says that he is about to improv; those performances were practiced thoroughly by him. Check him out in "message in a bottle" doing the same thing. There's nothing wrong with it, I am just pointing out his showmanship; fibbing to the audience.

  • @capoman1 Fair enough.

  • @capoman1 the best can't improve, or they would not have been the best to begin with...geesh.

  • @Niecee44 no that's wrong. The best continue to improve even though they've already surpassed the masses.

  • @jgl2222 can't argue with that! either way you look at it... john mayer is the best.

  • @capoman1 obviously he has practiced it he just means he hasnt performed it to a live audience yet you dick.

  • @dohers999 Wow you get really worked up huh?

I understand you are a Mayer fan, but calling people names? I figured by your comment you must be 18 or so, but it seems you are just an adult with the manners of a teenager.

  • @dohers999 And even so, he says "I've never played it acoustic, I'm gonna try." Now you may have some strange telepathic connection to this man, or a picture of him in your work locker, or John Mayer briefs, or a strange desire to make out with John Mayer, or John Mayer action figures, but that sounds like "I've never done it before, and now I'm gonna try." It doesn't sound like "I want you guys to hear something I've worked on lately."

  • @capoman1 well your obviously making weird scenarios up now and im not saying i know what hes thinking its just that your taking what hes saying too literal, he probably just means hes never performed it acoustically before, i called you a dick because your comment seemed quite arrogant and your latest one enforces that fact quite substantially

  • @dohers999 I appreciate honesty. So if you honestly disagree with something I commented, then say exactly what you disagree with. But if you instead just use name calling, and I call you on it, then you have to come back with a whole explanation of "the reason why I called you a name is..." Silly. Attack the statements, that is what makes the most sense. And I would think a 30+ year old man would be beyond childish name calling.

  • @capoman1 He said he'd never played it ACOUSTIC. He was playing an electric version of the song quite a bit at the time. There are vids of him all over youtube where people have thrown out song titles to him (of other artists) and he's played them on the fly with barely a missed note. Just because most people can't do that doesn't mean there aren't musicians out there that can. If he can do that with other people's songs, doing one of his own that he knows intimately would be relatively easy.

  • @greyseagirl Hey I'm not downing they guy. As a guitarist and musician, the guy AMAZES me really, his compositions, his talent, his performances. But I am saying that all of the so called "improv songs" that we are talking about; Free Falling, Message in a Bottle... were MOST LIKELY very well rehearsed. And that he is being a showman (not an insult) by saying "I'll just try this one for you guys; never done it before." Which do you find more likely? It's not a cut-down, just an observation.

  • @capoman1 I understand skepticism, but you have to remember he honed that ability doing tons of coffee house type gigs. I have a recording of him at a record store appearance and he was pondering what to play next and someone yelled N'Sync to be funny. He launched into Pop and didn't miss a beat or a word. He also used to play stump the musician occasionally online and I've yet to see him stumped. He really is just that adept and he listens to everything. He's a true lover of music as a whole.

  • @greyseagirl Yet again, not skeptical, only erring on the side of PROBABILITY. He PROBABLY practices along to EVERYTHING that he listens to. So he knows many songs. Not just "off the top."

  • so cute when he whistles. ,3

  • lol john mayer man that dudes a great singer he had every girl in the room wett

  • I had to separate the music I like from the artists that make it to enjoy a lot of stuff...I think w/mayer he's just trying to be funny and is taken the wrong way...he's a cool guy. And an incredible musician.

    the col

  • If you get where I'm coming from, this song is serendipity.

  • john, listen up: record this and put it on an album or something! one one of the best he's ever done

  • John Mayor is truly one of todays true legends.Awesome ,guitarist, songwriter, and musican , # 3 on my favorite artists of today.

  • can someone tell me what this song is about?

  • @MrGt6371 Suffering. One cannot write something like this unless he or she suffered first, it would be a paradox.

  • @MrGt6371 right? i don't get it either but i still had to change my panties.... cuz i wet 'em.

  • this song sounds sooo much better acoustically. this should have been acoustic to begin with in my opinion

  • i most like the old good john mayer

  • Why is everyone so critical of his private life? Isn't he living the dream? Get that family, kids, and minivan of your radar... it's not the thing to do despite what your parents say. Just a way to get through life and pretend it amounted to something only to have your efforts forgoten 2 generations from now. WAKE UP!!!!

  • Wow.. I feel like this song just changed me somehow. Amazingly talented man.

  • Another awesome mayer song

  • I've been listening to John since I was in fourth grade (I'm a sophomore now). His music is pretty much the soundtrack of my life. I absolutely love him, and I don't care what he does in his private life, you shouldn't mix that with his music. Just enjoy it, he's amazing.

  • can some one please let me know if this is an original

  • @highriser465 ... that I know of have searched I can't think of any other songs named "Hummingbird" with these lyrics and style. To the best of my knowledge it is original.

  • @highriser465 The song was written by the group Wilco. JM just decided to play it during an acoustic set...

  • @muzzickman Wrong? Google the lyrics for Wilco's Hummingbird.

  • @muzzickman Yeah Muzzickman, wrong. I looked it up too, completely different lyrics

  • @muzzickman have you ever heard the wilco song? same name, yes. same song far far from it

  • i love this song @johncmayer, it makes me cry it's such a loving song otherwise it calms me down every time, tears of joy...maybe my favourite of all time...but there are so many of yours....i love whistling.... every time i hear this song, i think of my favourite hummingbird foto i took....that was my gift that day too...

  • this prob the one of the most relaxing songs ive ever heard

  • You know John Lennon talked a lot of crap but I always separated that from his music. These people aren't perfect.

  • I have to say John Mayer is the GREATEST EVER..!!!!!!!!!

  • John Mayer assassin Music Video now up on youtube

  • he got outta tune while whistling :P But still great

  • i dont understand black people, how come you guys are allowed to take the piss out of white people and be racist towards us, and whites have to be like african americans, and tread carefully, ITS RIDICULOUS|! the past is the past get over it!

    xx

  • @davidgk100 people like you should not have brains. you do not know how to use them.

  • @davidgk100 hi whats the point of this comment and not all black people are the same and i understand the past is the past but it makes it hard to get over it when people still hate you just for the color of your skin. not to be rude or anything but im sure you'd feel that way when no matter what you do as a person you will always just be black. Especially when people make comments like you just did

  • @davidgk100 what is there not to get? they have 2 arms, 2 legs (3 if a guy), 2 eyes, a head...they have a mind and memories just the same as you and me. Just through evolution have adapted and have darker skin. People are offended by things that are offensive (excuse the bad worse choice) and it's people who have no insite into the history that are the problem. You wouldn't argue about the pains of childbirth to a mother if you were a man. So don't argue about history of black ethnicity on here

  • @davidgk100 ouch lmao

umm it's a bit 'cause we were in the underprivledged position...it still hurts ppl, or resurfaces old feelings, or ones you didn't think you had...and it makes ppl uncomfortable...but it's a struggle on both sides

  • How can you argue with this?

  • I like this song. Did he cover this or is it one of his own?

  • @Gokon9224 its his own

  • @pastyourhorizon

    Thank you

  • it`s nice

  • @gregg441 what is that supposed to mean??

  • back during his nerdy days :]

  • Great song. im black and im holding no grudge against a great song writer and guitarist. long as he said sorry thats good enough. I mean if u listen to this song its purely color blind. H

  • Here we go, with the blacks making it a race issue once again

  • @Escribble22 :-)

  • I adore this song. It's one of those where you can just get lost in his music. Sure, John fucks up from time to time, but he is a great songwriter

  • his music gives me peace and I am really relaxed when I lissen to it.. ( sorry for my bad englisch)

  • I actually just like his music. What he says and does in his private life should be just that, Private

  • @HaleyTylertoo then let it stay private!

  • @HaleyTylertoo Everyone is talking about his private life and all but, what he did? Can someone tell me?

  • @viniciuswonderboy he says a lot of inappropriate stuff.

  • @Ranch5490 Like what?

  • @viniciuswonderboy google it

  • Fuck You!!! He's human. He's allowed to mess up too! More pressure is put on him because he is famous. He has apologized sincerely! I can guarantee you and almost everyone else says the "r-word" every day!

  • Im sorry the "N-word". Thats what i meant.

  • @ericthemidgetdoll ARE YOU FUCKINg SERIOUS? black folks spend most of the time calling them selves "n-word" this and "N-word" that if anything YOU AND YOUR PEOPLE are the ones discriminating themselves.

  • Do you actually just watch a video of a man you clearly dont like just to start shit with his fans?

  • Man... John Mayer ........thank you for all your great music and thankyou for your talent. Your music helped me get through a real hard break up with my girlfriend.......

  • @liquidbend

    you're not alone

    lol

  • I second this. (Or third it?)

  • Dude Im a grown man and I cried from this song

  • same here...

  • same here man.

  • gorgeous song....casts a spell on me every time I watch it...

  • this song makes me cry every time i hear it

  • God, I love to watch him play his guitar.

  • i literally started crying during this. I love John mayer soo much :)

  • Great song for sure very moving.....executed to perfection... indeed!

Question : Now answer honestly. Would you have been brought to tears if he looked like... oh say Dr. Phill for example? Enquireing minds want to know ( even if they can't spell worth a shit). Thankyou.

  • @CougarCracker to be honest, if he looked like dr phil, i would not cry! i would probably be grossed out. hahaha. Good thing John Mayer has good looks and is talented :)

  • amazing!!!!!! bravo bravo!!!

  • i love it when he whistles. it's so cute :)

  • beautiful song! I like the way he looks in this video, so natural :)

  • Saw this on Palladia the other night, that was a great set, and this song stands out as one of the best. I liked the rendition of Neon as well.

  • great vibe

  • @ 2:01

  • he slips the pick between his index and middle finger. try it and you'll see why that makes more sense.

  • You can hear residual spiritual and lyrical remnants from these days on the new album. Well honestly, his life is thematic and juxtaposes his music so the same issues/lyrics will continue to roll over and evolve, and ultimately remain prevalent.

  • @BrannonMcConkey Your right he always said he "moves aside" instead of "forward" when making a new album.

  • OK as a guitar player I'm wondering where he puts the flat pick at 0:43 when he switches from hybrid flat picking to pure thumb and finger style? And then how does he pick it back up again so quick? It's a good trick whatever it is!

  • Palms it, doesn't he??

  • good question =/

  • he slips it in his palm.

  • hes so young here! i <3 him to death

  • hes one of the very few and rare artists who can actually sing so brilliantly outside of the studio
