The Japanese translator failed so badly.. :s At 1:47 and before he is saying things like "You wonder what kind of creature lives there? Let me tell you about that monster who lives there"...and this is so different from the original where he tells the story of "the man and the monster"... There is no mention of the man and monster elsewhere and the whole point of the film is that the monster is really Frollo and the man is Quasimodo.. How could the translator ruin such an important detail...!!
@GolliM No they didn't mess up anything. At 1:47 he says he's going to talk about a Monster story about someone who was at Notre Dame. THEN Clopin says at 5:28
さあ、鳴らすのは怪物か それとも人か saa, narasu no wa kaibutsu ka? soretomo hito ka? Basically: "The one who is ringing the bells, is he the monster? or the man?"
I think the foreign version lose the flow of the original song, but hell if the voice for Frollo isn't hella powerful.

I know I'm an ignorant so and so, but I just heard the word "Canada," and I was happy.

in that point you are totally right.

@GolliM My theory is that it is the translator getting revenge for mistranslations of Miyazaki films released in the U.S.
