I never had the opportunity to follow this show unfortunately and I notice that the songs which the three finalists played there are incredibly popular and overplayed. Were they given a specific list of songs to choose from for the very final? Or did they choose those for a reason? I'm just surprised at their choices!
@cecilia0007 In an attempt to shed some light, we were required to play a concerto and for me the Rodrigo seemed like the most obvious choice (perhaps too obvious, you might say). For the second piece, we were told to play strictly 'non-classical' pieces, hence the Jobim piece I played. I found this frustrating, as the classical guitar has so many beautiful 'classical' miniatures!! Best wishes, Ian
I'm surprised to hear such a jazzy version of Summertime on Classical Star. I would have thought they would have been very strict on purely classical music, not because of the title, but because of the type of show it is and the audience!
@scrollandkey Because of the heat from bright stage lights, guitars (particularly acoustic guitars) go out of tune very easily on stage. This is even worse with close up studio lights as well (we had both in that concert). I always tune it before going on stage but almost always have to tweak it just before beginning to play. This is normal in all classical guitar concerts. Of course, you don't usually see that on television as most producers have the sense to edit it out! Best wishes, Ian
I think Karen was a great contestant on Classical star. She should've been the winner because she was such a great performer and it would have been interesting because the Bassoon is quite uncommon. Bassoons rule!
Incidently I happened to see Sophie at the Glasgow International piano competition earlier this year (before 'classical star' was broadcast): She wasn't actually IN the competition itself, she was merely a student in one of the masterclasses. She's very lucky to be getting a recording contract ahead of those guys and girls battling away in the 'real' competitions. I might be sucker enough to buy her CD though, out of curiosity and open-mindedness... but also maybe to admire her sexiness.
The first real test will be her 'debut' album, which i believe should be out now. If you've got a good knowledge of pianists and the piano repertoire, the thing to do is compare Sophie's versions with established recording artists - particularly pianists who have won prizes at the top international competitions such as Leeds and Tchiakovsky. Sophie wouldn't even be ready for one of those competitions, maybe never will be, but she's side-stepped them by winning this. Nice ass and breasts tho :-)
too! Give me her ass any day, and i am 38 hehe. I feel no shame, after all - this is why she won: the marketing people took one look at her looks - the result may even have been decided before the series began. They are promoting her sexy image to make sales, so nobody (least of all she) can complain if she gets comments like tzrmike's and mine. This is an example of how looks can help a person jump the quewe.
you are such a chauvinist bastard! The reason she won is because of her amazing piano playing. That Dhostakovich, in my opinion, was better than the man himself!
Yes i am lol. She plays ok but believe me, there are dozens, maybe as many as a hundred excellent college pianists around the country the same age as her, and just as talented, sometimes even more so, but she was the lucky one to get the nod to go on the programme - because her looks made all the difference.
Just to let you all know Karen has signed to Chandos and will be releasing her first recording with the label in June! This will include a performance of Summertime
Delighted to announce that Karen has signed to Chandos and will be releasing her first recording with the label in June 2008! This will include a performance of Summertime.
what did you think of the concerto though, I think the fact he chose two completely different pieces that appeal to different people but played them both fantastically was a wise move. Needless to say I enjoyed them both
@Haeronthegreat I agree, not a good choice. However, we were told strictly to play a 'non-classical' piece after the concerto which I found particularly disappointing as the classical guitar has so many beautiful 'classical' miniatures. Although I was a pretty decent jazz player and improviser then, I thought doing something like that would be a bit gimmicky (although I should say, Karen pulled it off very well) so I ended up with this bossa by Jobim! Best wishes, Ian
Is it a heckel, walters, moosman, schcreiber, fox?

I really don't know why they cut the Nocturne short for the show. I'm sure she wouldn't have skipped all that herself.

Sure, Ian was great, but there are so many better pieces he could have played other than that horrid bossa.
