  • nowhere near as good as the original. not as spacey and eltons vocals are way too "musical theatre". some cool bits in it though.

  • actually john said he liked this version better

  • Elton John avec "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" et Joe Cocker avec "Whit a little help from my friends" deux merveilleuses interprétations, géniales de deux des classiques des Beatles. Thanks for reading. :-)

  • Can't compare...both are great in their own right.

  • i grew up with this one, so id have to say this one is better

  • Wonderful!

  • if i simply say John's is better can i avoid trouble?

  • I love recorders.... Especially since I can play one lol. :D

  • Brawndiculous on Jun 26, 2008 "=Quick note=

Yes, you can debate if this is good or not. Just don't be an idiot like the guy who said The Beatles' version appeared on the White Album. Kay?"

    NO KIDDING!

Anyone with even a 1/2 functioning brain knows this is from Dr Peppers !

  • @Delivered0ne lol dr pepper

  • A wonderful version of a magnificent song. It has the rhythm, percussion and meat the original lacks. I especially love the recorder that kicks in at 2:42.

  • Elton John's is better. :)

  • Love this song, The Beatles sang it first, but Elton John perfected it!

  • And of course, Dr. Winston O'Boogie is John Lennon.

  • if the guy said elton john's version appeared on the beatle's album, he'd be an idiot. but if they said the beatles version appeared on the beatle's album, that's a pretty good guess.

    brawndiculous=what an idiot.

  • i have heard this song like 200 times straight

  • john lennon has stated that he liked elton's version better.

  • This one of the VERY FEW Beatles covers that I don't see as a sacrilege.

  • i like the beatles version better but i still love this one

  • This is a very good cover. The music is great (a bit slower than the original), but I prefer by far John's singing for this song. He makes it sound mystical, plus he has Paul as backup voice.

    You just can't beat that.

  • I have been trying to figure out who did this version for quite some time now. They kept playing this version at work and I love it quite a bit more fondly than the original. One of the very few Beatles covers I am ok with.

  • I REMEMBER THIS YEAR 1974 VERY WELL IT HAD THE BEST MUSIC.

  • Actually, John L. played on the live version, not this one. But how can you beat this lineup? Elton on piano, synth and Mellotron; Dee Murray on bass; Davey Johnstone on guitars; Nigel Olsson, drums; the incredible Ray Cooper on percussion and Gus Dudgeon at the controls with Jeff Guercio...Heaven.

  • @Survivor2002 Wrong, he played on both, the original 45 label quotes it and Elton has talked many times about the recording session, Lennon's voice is clear as a bell in the background as well as his guitar. The name used on the 45 label was a pseudonym Dr. Winston O'Boogie. Winston being Lennon's true middle name.

  • I remember watching Elton John play this song in person at the Chicago Stadium back in 1975.

  • Back when a star might just up and release a single and there was no album! I like the Beatles but I side with John - this version is better

  • this is from the time when you could cover a CLASSIC and make a whole nother classic with it lol.

  • VERY COOL,don't remember it sounding this good when I was a kid, this is great ,thanks...

  • The greatest Beatles cover EVER.

  • i like this version much better too. =)

  • I like Elton's version much better. It's way, way groovier than the original.

  • Elton made this song much better that the Beatles did!

  • One of the song made at this century, (Of course from the Beatles) which Elton John made it loooooooong much better that the Beatles did!

  • LSD

  • when i hear this version it makes me want to touch children

  • @tristan9009 you are a sick bastrad!

  • @tristan9009 Yea. . . wait, what?!

  • Never heard this version! Rock On!

  • this song lacks the emotion and idea portrayed in the original

    basically its uber gay

  • To all you Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajun and Cleveland Browns fans: This was the #1 song in the USA when Jake Delhomme came into the world.

  • Elton John and Winston O'Boogie are the only people who have done Lucy in the Sky and really nailed the chorus, and not pussied out by making it a key lower.

  • And let's not forget who 'Dr. Winston O'Boogie' really is!

    (It's Lennon BTW)

  • i LOVE the beatles and i LOVE this song but i like this version better. i think its eltons voice that goes perfectly with the words. =)

  • I was introduced to this song through Elton's version and it stays with me, but both versions are very good. No one tops the Beatles of course.

  • Dr. Winston O'Boogie did a pretty good job on background vocals and guitar...wink wink

  • GREAT SONG

  • i like this version better except for the fact that its too slow :S

  • this version is great, but i love the psychedelic mysteriousness in the beatles version!

  • You can't knock the Beatles version but this one is def. awesome. Like to think of it as the spicy version :-)

  • why did he decide to steal the beatles a beatle made song

  • love it!!! :)

  • Both versions are great, but I like EJ's version better.

  • This is an outstanding version!

  • The Beatles' version is better in my opinion, BUT the chorus to Elton's version (1:13) is far better than the Beatles. Either way, they both rock!

  • @ceviche789 damn, final decision i like this one more LOL

  • I heard this the other day on the radio. I like the arrangment better, but would love to here john lennons voice with this arrangment. I like elton john too, but johns accent with this arrangment would be very cool.....

  • Reading your description of this while listening to the song I can't believe someone suggested the Beatle version on the White Album. Almost as if their Sgt. Pepper years never existed. And you're right about Lucy Vooden. She was Julian Lennon's classmate in nursery school (she was Lucy O'Donnell at that time) Julian drew a picture of her with diamonds for eyes, and showed the picture to John Lennon. The rest is history. Thanks.

  • I love both versions, I like this one just a little bit more.

  • now that i heard both i've no doubts that original one was better

  • both amazing versions but paul mccartney lucy in the sky with diamonds is missing (the high part )

  • yeah their are 348934534958304583 different bands that have covered The Beatles....I'd say this is the best one...If anyone could do it I'd be Elton John lol John Lennon was helping so its not a full cover but still great

  • The original and this one are both wonderful. The each provide a slightly different mood. I would be hard pressed but would say Elton's is my fav. Probably because I like reverb, more base, and the somewhat more orchestral feel.

  • It's great, but I like the original version better.

  • As great as this version is...I much prefer the original. Sgt. Pepper's is my all-time favorite album, so naturally I like the original version of "Lucy" much better.

  • Better than the original, in my opinion.

  • I have Loved the Beatles Music since I was a Boy, but this version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is MORE to my liking than John Lennon's Original.

It is EXTREMELY difficult to do BETTER than an Original, but Elton John succeeded in doing just that with this WONDERFUL 1975 hit!!!!!!

  • @AblePumper No, you just like it better. You don't decide for everyone else.

  • @weiner66 I wasn't deciding for everyone else. You should think before you speak.

  • @AblePumper You should add IMHO idiot.

  • I like that "Moog" style syth solo....very cool.....

  • This song is so wonderful. Just like this beetles song, Elton's songs actually had whole sentences and layers of meaning. Those layers could be peeled away where you could always find a meaning that seems like it is speaking directly to you. I don't think todays music compares so well in that respect.

  • @andyt1313 It has been suggested that you've never heard of Bernie Taupin.

  • why in the hell must people constantly tell there age?

  • @robrobinz23 So others can further appreciate how wonderful Eton's music is. His music is no longer popular culture but even young kids can still enjoy it. That says alot. Good music tends to fade with generations. So dont bash the kid. Congratulate him.

  • I love both versions of this song. Even though I'm only 13... Old music 4EVAH! <3

  • lennon plays the guitar in this version , and make the chorus

  • i prefer william shatner version.this one is not bad.i like the bass

  • @Themariohenri - Oh ba ha

  • I prefer the introduction of this song over The Beatles, but I think The Beatles' version is overall better. I do like Elton John and The Beatles both very much, though. :)

  • I love EJ's version first, I was 18, second, it came out while I was in Orlando''s bootcamp and it would be playing on the intercom of the mess hall, along with George Harrison's Dark Horse. Brings back such wonderful YOUTHFUL memories!

  • Two versons of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is awesome thanks to Elton John and John Lennon

  • He sings it great. Of course the beatlees sang it better, but they really shouldn't be compared. Thats like saying the Beatles couldn't sing rocket Man better. It can't be done, the original is usually, if not always the best.

  • this song is great, both versions, though I personally prefer the Beatles version, to me it seems more surreal, and the nervousness in Lennon's voice, the very reason he was unhappy with the original recording, adds to it. And as for who ever said this was originally on the white album, should go pick up a copy of Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club, a strip of acid, and lock himself in a closet for two weeks with a boom box and 2 gallons of O.J.

  • @UniqueTaty683 Mmmmmmmm OJ

  • The best one, even better that the Beatles one!

  • hahaha i have two dogs named lucy and diamond...weird.

  • I like this version better...sorry beatles

  • Uhhh no! The Beatles sing it waaaay better :P

  • and he is married to a cute man from my hometown of Toronto

  • I actually, believe it or not, like this better than the Beatles....

  • this kicks ass. it was very slightly pre-elton-sellling-out-to-balls-free-pop sclock. it covers the general sentiment in a jaw-tingling way that i'm sure the beatles got at least a good long smile out of...

  • Actually Elton's version holds up much better than one might expect after all this time. It still rocks (although the original was ... well, the original)

  • "The Beatles' version appeared on the White Album."

    That's hilarious!

    Seriously.

This one kid said Elton John WROTE this song. I laughed in his face. xD

Must say, John Lennon's voice just fits the mood of the piece better to me. But I think the chorus was almost perfect for Elton's voice.

  • i love it....total beatles fan, but this version is excellent! Of course I just listened to the chili peppers doing hendrix's castles made of sand.........take it as you will (listen to castles though before you judge..........)

  • ugh, it's too bad ppl are fighting about the original vs. the cover. That kind of stuff all reeks of a "my dad is better than yours" type of childishness. Just take a hit, a shot, a deep breath (if you don't partake)... calm down and sit back and enjoy the fact that the original is great, the cover is great, and the song itself is great. That's all that matters. Just tune in, enjoy the moment, and tune out for the next 8mins + 12 seconds... which is what I'm going to do... later ;-)

  • @cantecleer amen brother!

  • fail

  • Did someone honestly post that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds appeared on the White Album?

  • I actually like this version better.

  • Having grown up with both , versions , Eltons version is the Best , Of course John Lennon , is singing and Playing on this , that says it all, Magic !!!!!

  • Cant compare the two both are very good.

    :)

  • lol it's better at least than the Carpenters version of "Help!"

  • neat find i like Lennon better

  • Lennon is doing the backing vocals and guitar.

  • That is alright but i prefer the Beatles version.

    Nice Find!!!

  • I agree that John's voice does have a bit of a stilted quality to it but I like it cause it kind of adds to the trippy vaguely voyagistic quality of it, along with the redone sound track just really gives it a moving trip feeling.

  • i love Elton but i think the the beatles original version is better

  • ...and yet Lennon performed this version of the song with Elton John. Live. ^^

  • @drgigglesdoescocaine Elton gives this song More kick. the Music is better..eltons voice is much better than John's. sorry this is one remake thats better than the original.

  • Elton John is one of the greatest musicians ever to raise his voice, but I feel as if the easy cadence of the orginal is lost by Elton's stilted prounounciations at most points... this is the dance with another person where as the other is flail your arms in your room late at night, lol

  • Comment removed

  • This is the best version ever! I love the Beatles but Elton's is much better!

    Classier!

  • I actually quite like this version.

  • can you not hear John Lennon's voice in this?

  • do you know that John Lennon is on this version?

  • On this version as backing vocals?? Please explain further I am very amazed by this comment.

  • You can hear his voice most clearly in the reggae section.

  • i prefere this version because i like music from eltohn john and like his voice but if i was fan from the beatles i should chose for the beatles so who you chose is who you like as most

  • The Beatles version is wayyyy better. That's just my opinion.

  • Even John Lennon liked this version better than the one the Beatles did

  • John lennon sung in this version under the name Dr. Winston O'Boogie.

  • For starters, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds was on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band not the White Album xD

  • most of the time i prefer the original but this version is so nice and it's a really unique version of the song. i enjoy both of them pretty equally.

  • Dr. Winston O'Boogie is really John Lennon

  • Sorry guys Elton's version is far superior

  • I agree and that 5 thumbs down should instead be 5 thumbs UP !!

  • Im sorry but no. The beatles sing it better.

  • @Keyboardguy99 I will have to desagree. elton made this song sound better. fuller, with more life. and don't get me wrong. I love the beattles. I heard both versions. elton did better. specially when the key board kicks on. beautifull melody.

  • Thank you for posting this. Brings back many memories from my teen years.

  • @rjspeleton: Like the way you tried to provocate me. at least you did it with style and you made me laugh.

To be perfectly honest with you, you're right. I'm not gonna argue with you about what you said, because it's true. No question about that.

That said, I think the original Beatles version really is something else. It probably is great to listen to while on drugs or something, but I think it gets stale. The Elton John version's got substance. Diversity.

    And @buffalo: Much apreciated bro.

  • Forget it TheMasterpiece911, rjspeleton is blinded by anything Beatles. This is a fine effort by Elton and was more what John Lennon envisioned the original Lucy to be in 1967. JL never really liked how his version turned out. It is still to this day the only Beatles cover to go to #1 on the Billboard chart, that is undisputed. Do I like the Beatle version better? yes. Do I like this version? yes. Which is better? Probably the original. When its close always go with who did it first I say.

  • i like elton john but if he EVER TAKES ANOTHER BEATLES SONG I'LL I'LL I WILL WELL IDK BUT JOHN AND GORGE SHOULD RISE FROM THE DEAD AND EAT THEM

  • @sapperguyjr Thank you so much! Yes, let's repaint the Mona Lisa and talk about how much better it is then the original. Elton used tracing paper on this one and then took the luxury of "fixing" parts of it, "a little more blue here, a little more yellow there...let's giver her eye shadow...what do you say John"? "Hey whatever you say Elton, will you be my new "Paul" Yoko isn't the collaborator I thought she'd be". Wow, what artistry.

  • @sapperguyjr That's kind of an interesting though, considering John is on this record, providing guitar work and background vocals.

  • John and George were alive and well when this version came out.

  • this is obviously an improved version of the beatles song, which is EVIDENT in the fact, that John Lennon HELPED Elton John write this. I personally LOVE this song. It is much more complex and has a nicer harmony than the original.

  • @TheMasterpiece911 Yes, I especially love how he wails, "ohhhhhhh Lucy" at the end for a painful full minute and a half, making it sound like it goes, "Lucy in the sky with Lucy", over and over and over, and over. Yes, it sounds so different than all the other mid and late seventies vacuous drivel doesn't it? And the best part, he didn't have to compose it, it was already there for him. As for John's accompaniment and arranging in the studio, uhh, yeah John was so together in the 70's wasn't he?

  • beatles = way better

  • As the debate over this song (Beatles vs. Elton) ...Please remember that in the early 1975 this was the #1 song across the nation here in the states! Obviously someone liked Elton's version quite a bit, no?

  • I like it frill

  • bloody brilliant, version, elton,is the only one who could pull this off,,,

  • the original is way way better.. its meant to be a trippy song and this is nowhere close.. its not a bad rendition though, but the original is just so awesome that this comes nowhere close

  • You guys seems to be forgetting that: "..in 1974, Elton John released a cover version as a single. Recorded at the Caribou Ranch, it featured background vocals and guitar by John Lennon under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O'Boogie.

  • I like this versions keyboard effects however to be honest Lennon had the bliss to it that Elton can't copy. Although Lennon is the original and it is entirely his own Elton does the best remakes possible. I cannot conceive anyone to either copy exactly the mellow of a tune or improve it in some areas. So its really a coin toss between Elton and Lennon there are both good enough to be preferred over the other and nobody should be able to say otherwise besides a very descriptive opinion.

  • you're all idiots, the original by the rolling stones is MUCH better

  • No way,Beatles is rubbish compared to this.

  • fail

  • the original is by the beatles btw

  • the roling stones version isn't the original. It's by the Beatles

  • this is better than the original, the william shatner one is pure shit. lol

  • this song is pure genius. Both mens versions are great. This song will live on forever , just like the memory of the beatles. Thank you John, and Sir Elton for music that creates good memories in our lives. May the Gods bless your inspiration and creativity.

  • I like this better than the Beatle original. Elton gives it a mini-suite treatment.

  • cool

  • Fun fact~ John Lennon did the background vocals and guitar in this song. He played under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O'Boogie.

  • i knew that lucy vodden died

    on my bros b-day

    and my names lucy

    creepy

  • You obviously all miss the point of the original by the Beatles. Its a psychedelic song ment to send you on a trip to another realm of imagination. Elton John does not do that. He makes it more of a song. And less of a trippy and super fantasy life changing and world shifting experience. So I must say. I prefer the Beatles. Kick up the psychedelics and chill out. Peace man.

  • elton john pwns this song

john lennon just warmed it up 1st

  • I looked up this song to see what Elton's version was like and, hey ho, it's coincedentally 35 years to the day today since it was released as a single. Neato. XD

  • Oh yeah this one tops the origonal easy!

  • I like the Beatles version better - not!

  • I hate "covers"

But only Elton John can do this

and make i sound better than the original

You just know he heard this and

went..."Damn I can make this better."

  • I didnt know that Mr. John doesnt do this in concert because of his collabortion w Mr. Lennon at the time. It hurts to miss a friend,,they can never be replaced..

  • I like better the Elton John version, period.

  • you ARE saying that just to get a big reaction from people right?

it doesn't even need to be said, but i'll say it anyways: the jonas brothers are shite. the beatles are awesome. the end.

  • i like the way elton sings the verses but the beatles's chorus murders this one

  • All this and world WarII.

best and most enduring cut of the entire album...

    brilliant stuff

  • This is the only, and I mean the -only-, Beatles cover song I can stand. Period. Usually I hate people who cover Beatles songs on principle, but this is very good. (With this song, I just hate everyone who says it's about LSD on principle.)

And to the moron who said it was on the album known as the White Album - this is track three on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Geez.

  • John Lennon plays guitar on this version.

  • My school is having a 70s Dressup day. my brother is being Elton John.

  • I think you are all taking this a bit too seriously. John Lennon and Elton were friends, and this version is merely Elton's interpretation of what is a classic track...nothing more, nothing less. I happen to think this is one of Elton's best songs from his heyday. Take it for what it is, it was never meant to upstage the original version.

  • its better--no discussion

  • And if I'm not mistaken, didn't John Lennon say that Elton took it to a level he tried to bring it, but just couldn't get it right. And he liked Elton's version better than his own?

  • John lennon was like that though, he gave other artists more credit than he gave himself. I mean he also said that Yoko Ono was a superior artist to himself and that his relation with her was a teacher/pupil relationship (with her being the teacher). And lets face it, Yoko Ono is nothing compared to Lennon. She would be nothing had she not met Lennon.

  • That's right according to The Beatles Encyclopedia by Bill Harry.

  • And by the way SumHandball..., why do you spend so much time on this thread if you don't care much for Elton's version? Why not hunt down Lennon's more 'out of tuned' version, light up a bong, and have a good old time with that baby reminiscing over your long lost LSD, dope smoking days of puberty? Sink your belly in, put a tupay on, and cover that bald spot up.

As for me? I'm staying right here where I belong, and where I've been at since that featful time in 1974.

  • lol same here i hate it wen ppl say "its better than the oringinal!"
