I didn't know hedgehogs were wild in Europe, so when I saw one on the sidewalk late one night while I was studying abroad in Austria, I picked it right up and put it in my purse!!! The little thing was so mild and tame, it let me just carry it around while I asked my friends how I could find its owners. I was really surprised and disappointed when my friends told me nobody there keeps them as pets, but back into the forest it went anyway.

Do NOT feed your hedgehog catfood. Buy a more commercail hedgehog diet. Catfood is too high in calories for such a small animal, and is too high in fat. A hedghog eating catfood is like a person eating McDonalds all the time.

@joshtimberth most hedgehog food hasnt got the correct ammount of vitamins, minerals ect. whereas catfood has . catfood is best for hedgehogs but also feed them insects (not from your garden , they could carry disease) from a petshop because they are naturally insectivores.

@joshtimberth you can feed a hedgehog on cat food, but you have to select a very low-fat, high-protein formula, usually intended for an indoor senior or overweight cat. Below 10% fat content is preferable. We use the Canin Royal indoor 40 (light), which has an excellent balance of protein and fiber.

@joshtimberth Actually, majority of commercial hedgehog food is pure crap. Its full of nothing but fillers and made with biproducts. Hedgehogs are insectivores, and need a meat based diet with vegetables. Cat food has all that, and only feed a high protein low fat food.

@joshtimberth Sorry, no. :] Pretty much any commercial hedgehog food is crap for them; they have fillers like corn, and some of them even have things that can be dangerous for hedgehogs to eat, like nuts/seeds or raisins. A high quality cat kibble that falls within the suggested range for fat/protein percentages is very nutritious for them. That can be supplemented with insects, etc. Calories aren't an issue because most hedgehogs run a lot; some will go 10+ miles in a night.

@joshtimberth My buddy bought a baby hedgehog and killed it in a week by feeding it whiska's cat food. I yelled at him for feeding it cat food when he first got it and said he'd kill it. It died of protein OD. Literally. It's the same with Ferrets. People feed them cat food and end up with very sick or dead ferrets.

I loved my hedgehog when I had him. <3 I don't know why state regulations are so strict around them. (No offense, but they're not the brightest tools in the shed) Even if my boy did ever escape, he would have probably got himself stuck in a hole and I'd have to rescue him. ^^; Or moseyed up to my neighbor's front door just for the heck of it and gotten picked up again. Haha. Seriously though, the chances that they'd survive in the US are slim. Especially since there aren't many of them here.

How do hedgehogs treat captivity? I always considered them to be wild animals, and never had the heart to try to keep one at home. Are they friendly, do they enjoy people handling them?

@sajirobert there is a difference between a wild hedgehog and a domesticated one. its like asking whats the difference between a dingo and a dog. these animals were made and have grown into living with people, most of them will not do well in the wild and will probably die so they are not really considered wild because they are not as independent . i would say they are more exotic then wild, you have to know what you are doing when raising these kind of animals.
