Ok do you know how some people turn in circles one way and then turn in circles the other way and the dog stayes next to them? I have seen it when the dog can go backwards heeling. it's kindof hard to explain, im sorry if you don't understand what im talking about. but I don't know how to train my dog to heel backwards.
This combines with your previous video sounds really cool. I never tried to teach heeling because I didn't know a non-cohersive method for a precise heeling.
Two questions:
1) Have you done any video with you starting to walk with you dog? If not, I'd really appreciate it.
2) Do you have verbal cues for right and left side? If so, which are them?
PS. Are you working with socks only? Hahaha, I do the same!
I tried the food method. It only worked as long as there were treats. :( After the treats were gone my puppy just ignore me again. What am I going to do then?
@SexySheerah You should combine food reward with praise or a toy, after your puppy does something you want him to do the first time give him food, then the second time just praise him. It's going to take a lot of repetitiveness but eventually he should realize that food won't always come, but he will get a positive reward. Mix it up
I love Solea ... I would like to get a dog or a puppy and start training it ... What breed, temperament, character should I look for? I mean in terms of trainability, since I am still a beginner in training
I am so glad that I am not crazy. My dog is so smart and usually very quick to learn, but "heel" is absolutely confusing her. So today I made it so that she was between me, a wall, and the corner so there is NO WAY she can be in the wrong position. I'm so happy to see a similar thing in this video!
This doesnt work on my dog. He just sits infront of me and wont follow the treat around. I had the chair next to me and tried to do it the exact same way
I not only LOVVVE your videos but even the format is great. You are quick and to the point. You show how to do the training with a dog and you are great at explaining the concept.
Thanks for posting them. I will definitely come back and watch more!!
@MadaraPeinNaruto You could mute the clicker by putting a bit of poster tack in the clicker's dimple. I think they also sell clickers that make a quieter sound. Or you can use your voice "yes" instead of a clicker.
@MadaraPeinNaruto you could just use your voice and say "yes"..but my dog was super afraid of the clicker too in the beginning. We had gotten a refular box clicker which are suuper loud. I found a softer one (a black one from petco) and started clicking it behind my back so it would be even softer. He'd still jump in the beginning, but would stay cuz he knew treats were coming lol Now he's not scared of it at all :)
Your dog training methods are amazing, I just got a new dog, probably 7 months old and it was kinda hard to train her but with your tutorials it's nice and easy :) Thank you!
@Bonesndelta It's the same concept. You can use a toy or anything that your dog wants and do the same as what he's shown you here. Then when you lure your dog into position with the toy etc, when you CLICK or say "YES" throw the toy or let them tug (and win). You're still rewarding the dog for something they want when they preform the behavior YOU want. =]
@Parris217 Yes, you start out using the clicker (or whatever marker you use, mine is verbal) and use it to teach the behavior. Once the dog understands the behavior you add the cue/command. Reward throughout those stages. Then once you feel your dog has really gotten it down, fade out the treats and not treat all the time but still praise verbally. However it would be best to do refreshers and practices at home with treats to make sure the command is still reinforced. I hope that helps
I really like your vids. finally there is a good way to train dogs without having to pull the leash hard or shout at the dog for nothing, cause I really didn't like the old ways :)
It's a good video, well produced, edited. Training is spot on. One problem: the name of your channel. It seems so random. It's not something people will remember.
@SUPERMANGO19 Sometimes you can encourage luring by initially rewarding the dog for just looking at the treat. Raise that criteria slowly, and next click only for a tiny movement towards it, even if it's just a centimeter. Soon you can work your way up to luring for longer distances.
This is such a great help to me to teach my Rough collie Shylah to heel very close to me and no lead on Solea great. I am in a wheel chair and it is hard to do some things I see from my wheels but this will really help me.Wwould you train just this all week or do other traning as well? I am never quite sure how many things to train daily.
@issie49 I personally like to work on a few different things per day so that it doesn't get boring. Just like if we were to play the same game all day everyday, we would get pretty tired of it! At the same time, we don't want to work on too many things at once either. It all depends on you and your dog and I'm sure you'll be able to determine how much you can work on and keep her interested :)
works great! it's funny tho b/c every time he has a leash on... and I say heel... he wraps the leash around me! But I'm happy that he takes his place by my side! thanks!
I once took a class in everyday obedience with one of our pups. They taught the exact same heel position, by instructing us to have the dog on leash and pull it around your back to the right side. This method is however a lot better, and it's also the method I've used :)
@tab289 That's right! It also keeps the dog happy and positive to get to try out different things on it's own, instead of having the trainer jerking it around and showing it what to do with force.
man you're dog's really smart (and has a good parent/trainer as well obv.) dogs are such a smart, intelligent species in general and its always great to see them learn different tricks thru training, figure things out and do what you want them to do.

@Suffix95 Isn't it always so much better when the dog chooses to do it? Learning is just way faster and better retained that way.

@tab289 That's right! It also keeps the dog happy and positive to get to try out different things on it's own, instead of having the trainer jerking it around and showing it what to do with force.
