@Emajor7b5 Wow. As a tenor myself (having never sung the piece or studied it) I didn't even realize that was a Bb. I didn't realize it got that high until the obvious bit at the end.
This is super. Normally I can't stand to hear Keenlyside if I can see him, whether in person, on video or in HD, but here he's just fine. (Maybe in concert, no 'acting'?) Usually this duet is not well balanced between the singers, but this version is. Nice tenor!
Yes, yes, it's quite beautiful. But when is someone going to mention the homosexual overtones of this duet? Since when do two men prefer to give up their chase of a beautiful woman in order to preserve their friendship?
No Hamlet is not bland and yes Simon K has paid his due. His fame and recognition are well deserved. And his French is PERFECT. As a French national, I have never heard such level of perfection in singing my native language by a foreigner.. I understand his German is brilliant too. Chapeau bas, Monsieur Keenlyside. And such virility too..
I love Matthew's Voice!!! He blows Roberto Alagna out of the water!! Unlike Alanga he's a smart singer who knows his limits. He's not obsessed with being the next Pavarotti, he's obsessed with being an excellent singer.
@LoudFast1234 Im not saying Alanga isn't a great singer, he was at one point but he is loosing it fast because he sings things that are clearly beyond his limits.
Well, I had *heard* that Hamlet is bland. I saw it on Saturday and "bland" is the last word I would use. "Riveting" more like, certainly when performed with such commitment and energy. SK lived up to his reputation. He'll be in next year's HD Don Carlo.
Pedomano wrote: "He is certainly the handsomest of the new crop of baritones..." He's not new. He was born in 1959 and he made his debut in 1987. "-- very sexy with a beautiful voice." Oh, yes!!! HD cinecast of "Hamlet" from the Met on March 27th. I imagine he will breathe some life into a rather bland opera. Really looking forward to it.
Simon Kennlyside and Matthew Polanzani are fantastic singers. Matthew is still so young and achieving so much. Simon is a bit older, but he has done incredible things and he continues with great roles. Also, I met them both in person at the end of their respective performances. And they are amazing human beings, so warm and nice gentlemen. They are just great!
I don´t think so really. His movementes are about being uncomfortable on stage without a character, and being Simon K.. It's normal in many artist to be shy when they are not in custum. I think this is the case about Simon.
This is truly wonderful. For those of you who love Simon's singing, check out his recording of Schumann's Ballade der Harfner, op. 98 a-2. It is out of this world.

Bravo for Polenzani! But in this duet I love Keenlyside's performance. He sounds perfect and powerful, Listen carefully also at 2:19 to his voice!

FINALLY a tenor that understands that the Bb at 02:19 is piano ! :)
Emajor7b5 10 months ago 5
@Emajor7b5 I like the piano Bb too, but technically the score does say forte every time that Bb is there.

The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City is blessed to have both of
these singers on their rooster. I saw Matthew Polenzani in "Don Pasquale"
on Saturday and he has such a sweet lyric tenor voice . Simon Keenylside
is also a fine singer. Bravo for this duet.
