@McNoobsauce to me all his stuff sounds the same, and it all sounds like noise, dont get mad at me, we all have our own opinions. id prefer victor wooten or someone with a lot more music theory, and precision.its a preference, not telling you, or trying to persuade you to think the same
I haven't thought you're convincing me to anything even for a second, so don't be afraid about that :P Still, being a good player isn't about making extremely complicated things, that was the point of my previous post. As to the noise part, I guess I can agree mostly, I'm not a terrific fan of Claypool's solo work or Primus as a band. Some songs are good though, and Claypool's ability to play the bass isn't something debatable.
@McNoobsauce agree'd! finally a youtube person with a brain! kind of why i like justin chancellor. his stuff is really easy to play, but its well written so i agree with u. and i do like primus. but i think somtimes les is just a tad overrated.
He may be a tad overrated, and I dont care for his fast double thumb/triple pluck stuff as it begins to sound like noise. But, at the end of the day he grooves out big time with stuff like 'sex in a pan' etc and that is why he is one of the best bassists out there.
Les is good, dont get me wrong, I'm enjoying primus's stuff atm. But his unique style is basically percussive pop'n'slap covered in effects. His actual technique is like a breed of Louis Johnson and Larry Graham combined.
@naycnay you're trying to sound like you know what you're talking about when you really don't... So shut your mouth before someone who actually deserves an opinion pops you in the mouth.
That's pure talent you're calling over-rated. Recognize it, and respect it.
Did I disrespect either artist in my post? Victor Wooten gets the limelight as the "best bassist in the world" and technically speaking I'd agree. But there isn't a best in music. I also said, I don't particularly care for his over technical lines when his true talent shines when he plays humanly comprehendable grooves.
Stop raging and go lean to compose a valid "opinion". I dont deserve an opinion?
Wow, this is an old post... Did I say it was was simple? Where did I say it was so simple? Where did I disrespect him. Learn to play some Larry Graham, get the funky groove of "double thumb" popping and slapping down. Then, tackling a Les Claypool line wont see so distant.
Btw, I am referring to the ability to play those lines, not compose them. Les Claypool is unique, interesting and a very good bass player, but he's not the best.
@naycnay Just the fact that you are using the term "best" gives you much less credibility. I never claimed that you said it was simple. I said that you over-simplified his technique. If i were to apply the same logic to Danny Carey by saying "Danny is good, but his technique is basically just poly-rhythms with the occasional drum fill," doesn't that sound a tad bit rude; to reduce someone's life work and dedication to a general statement that can be applied to any musician; even anything?
First of all, "best" was quoted. Google it. "But there isn't a best in music" refering to numbnuts who say "x" is better than "y", when thats a load of shit.
I simply broke down his technique in return to the blind young bassists who think Les is the most godly bassist out there, when quite frankly hes... really not. His "style" is mainly percussion pop and slap, clearly influenced from a handful of musicians. He then uses mad effects to get some psycadellic sounds.
However, the man is a very good bassist, I never said otherwise.
The same can be said about a massive amount of famous guitarists and bassists. Probably even you or me, if we have managed to even develop our own style. My guitar playing nowadays is rediculously influenced by my days learning anything by AC/DC which got me into guitar.
And at the end of the day, I was being blunt, not rude. But, you were being rude by missinterpreting parts of my post and retaliating to it.
lol i have one its just a banjo no difference i thought it was a "bass-jo" lol but i reserched this preformance and its just a bass with a foot peddle that makes it deeper, like the guitar from white stripes
Wow, that's actually a hell of a lot less expensive than I thought I would. Since they're the only company, they could easily get away with charging an arm and a leg more than that. I don't know if they would all sound as good as Les can make it sound, though. Maybe that's why they aren't that expensive. lol
RE:demonwerewolf110- well it also could be that theres not to big of a market for them, i mean how many bass players want a bass banjo before they heard this
i play the banjo and have an extra one laying around (5-string) i know it would sound different but do you think if i replaced the strings (maybe even tuners) with bass strings i could get a similar sound? the only problem is the neck maybe too small
yeah man thats a bass neck on a banjo body the strings would be too big for a normal banjo. a buddy of mine has a banjo like yours a 5 string and its got a floating bridge so you would have to find something else to use for a bridge to use stings that big.
Don't try it - you'll end up breaking something. The tension required to tune up the bass strings is a lot more than the regular ones. Your neck may snap off or something similar.
All this hate, why isn't anybody talking about how cool the bass Jo is? Paul mccartney is best lmao.

Ha! Who else on the planet would have a bass-jo if Les didn't?

Instead of a snare drum, how about they make it a bass drum with a bass neck? It'd be cumbersome but kick-ass...
DRIVEBYRACHKO 4 years ago
It wouldn't resonate much...you'd have a very dead sounding Banjo.

what bass manufacturer makes them? Thats not a gold tone, I know that for sure by the headstock.

Gold Tone is the only company that I know of that will mass-produce them. As far as Bass companies, I couldn't tell you.
BsnjoNerd 4 years ago
this one was custom made for him, though. By a friend. He told us (the crowd) when he took it out during a concert. Thats no gold tone.
hairyhairy2x4 4 years ago 13
@hairyhairy2x4 I'm fairly certain every bass the Les owns is custom made simply because when it comes to playing bass Les is his own class.
