In hindsight, it might have been due to the punch, even if it barely hurt Inoki, being impressively-executed for the a boy of his age. Inoki, impressed with the power and potential of the boy, gave him the Toukon Slap to encourage further improvement.

A lot of oldschool wrestlers like Inoki (especially him) have chips on their shoulders about people trying to "test" them and see if they're real tough guys.

Inoki was letting the kids hit him, but the one he slapped punched him harder than he was expecting. Inoki slapping him was sort of like saying "if you're going to hit me as hard as you can you should be able to take a rasslin slap in return."
