  • One of their old engines, #706 is sitting by my house in Austintown, Ohio

  • IIRC the Pacific Wilderness 6 axle cars also played hell with the 100 year old track on the tight curves.

  • plus the cost was out of this world for the short trip. Family of 4 cost $101.00 for round trip Vic to Courtenay on the dayliner, 75 for 1 on this stupid run.

  • I rode it when I was 2

  • some of the cars a ex-via rail cars, i saw them being repainted

  • I rode on this train, it didnt go that far.

why did it not go to Duncan??

  • Because the guy who owned it didn't want to spend any more money. It might have succeeded if it went to Duncan or Chemainus.

  • Lots of reasons why PAW failed. CP Rail, who at the time still owned the Right-of-Way between Victoria and Nanaimo(it was only leased to RailAmerica) was a major factor. They were charging Pacific Wilderness a pretty penny to use the yard in Victoria, CP Rail wouldn't let them go past Malahat, in fact it took threat of legal action from RailAmerica before CP even let them run to the top of the Malahat.

  • Also, while it was not made public yet, the railroad was about to loose it's largest freight customer and RailAmerica was planning to shut the line down by the end of the year. Lack of passengers, all the costs put on them by CP Rail, the E&N itself shutting down by the end of the year, all led to the PAW's owners pulling out.

  • They couldn't make a go of it as the train went from from Victoria to nowhere. It should of gone to Duncan at least or Chemainus but it only went to Malahat and back.

  • did they just quit business thats a shame because we should have more tourist train travel especialy with gas prices that would be a great vacation

  • Does that ever bring back memories. I washed the locomotives and rolling stock during the first season. It was the first "Railroad" I worked for.
