I just realized that two of Bruce's songs on this album (Tears in the Morning and this gem) deal with a divorce. Tears in the Morning is more obvious, but to me, this song lyrically is adressed to a child who's dealing with the divorce. "Good things turn bad, but it's over now," and lines like "You may not live with me every day/all that I care is that we find a way/to stay together" are my evidence.

Anyone else think the same thing?

This is a great tune! It's also significant in that it's one of the last times Brian used that sweet falsetto voice he had in the early days (too much smoking -- or something -- did away with it). I especially love his interjections at  1:14 and 2:23.

Whatever the case, Dierdre is a showcase of Bruce's clever lyrics and a sweet melody, co written with Brian Wilson. Listen closely as "vibes" ring throughout, and the song pushes along with an understated orchestral production. Always one of my faves on this album, and definitely "dreamy" as it floats among the clouds!! A top 30 Hit I believe, in Germany in 1970 when released as an A-side!!
