all of you guys are seriously retarded. they purposely sang the name that way. is that so hard to realize? how bout you guys discuss the pure and beautiful sounds of the song. its a great song and the beach boys are the fuckin best
@deirdrekearney That's how i say it too! It's weird how other people find it so hard to pronounce when I have it written down..I'm like "Look at the paper there's another 'R' there!" it's not that hard, people -_-
I just realized that two of Bruce's songs on this album (Tears in the Morning and this gem) deal with a divorce. Tears in the Morning is more obvious, but to me, this song lyrically is adressed to a child who's dealing with the divorce. "Good things turn bad, but it's over now," and lines like "You may not live with me every day/all that I care is that we find a way/to stay together" are my evidence.
My real name is Deirdre. I met Bruce Johnston back in the late 70's and I thanked him for the song. He didn't write it for me! But he did ask me if he had pronounced it right.
I remember discovering this song in 1994, when I bought the awesome Sunflower album. The funny thing is it reminds me of "Deirdre Barlow" the character in Coronation Street, who in 1994 was going through some exciting storyline.
I was going to be named either Deirdre or Brandy, my dad played this record for my dying grandfather in the hospital and he chose Deirdre. Thank goodness!!! My sister is also named after a Beach Boys song, go figure...
This has the early Beach Boys vibe with a hint of the early 70's folky genre. Call me weird but besides the lyrics and the middle part I think this sounds like a Pet Sounds ditty with it's glossy production and sweet, tender vocals
Great song from the 'largly forgotten' 1970 Beach Boys album, "Sunflower." Easily in the group's Top 5 There are BB devotees who consider this their BEST album. First album to really feature ALL the guys...."Add Some Music To Your Day," the first single, is Brian's favorite lyric..."Forever" is DW's anthum--his musical epitaph so to speak. Rolling Stone ranks it among the top 500 all-time albums. Check out all the tracks.
someone I deeply care about has been away for a month with no contact. of course when i first hear this song today (about 20 days after her gone) she sends me a message saying she'll be home tomorrow :'3
This is a great tune! It's also significant in that it's one of the last times Brian used that sweet falsetto voice he had in the early days (too much smoking -- or something -- did away with it). I especially love his interjections at 1:14 and 2:23.
Still plenty of songs after this that Brian still had his "older" falsetto ability. His backup falsetto on "Forever" on the same album is pretty great.
Sunflower was a great album and this Bruce Johnson song was just one of a few very listenable numbers. I loved the cover pic with the grown Beach Boys and their children.
Well, I´m not gay - but i love the songs made by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. I think their music is the only one playin´dayin dayout in god´s own paradise.
"Well, I´m not gay - but i love the songs made by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys."
I don't have any reason to believe you're gay, but if you think liking the Beach Boys and the music of Brian Wilson might be indicative of being gay, then you're probably not gay, just stupid and maybe not self-assured about your sexual orientation. If anybody thought I was gay for liking the Beach Boys I'd tell 'em to fuck off.
Bollocks.....in God's paradise they're playing Beach Boys, Beatles, Billie Holiday, the Who, Muddy Waters, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, the Grateful Dead (lots of that), the Clash, Beethoven, James Brown, Aretha, Charlie Parker, Capt. Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Rolling Stones, the Kinks, Motown, Tchaikovsky, Robert Johnson, Cream, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Sex Pistols, Talking Heads, more Grateful Dead, Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Yardbirds, Joni Mitchell, the Band, the Bee Gees, Howlin' Wolf, Pearl Jam
...maybe in "Paradise-City"...but every year on my deathday-party the Beach Boys will play live with Brian...of course. Oh boy, that will be something.
Don't forget Nirvana, Jimmy Hendrix, Hank Williams,Louis Armstrong,Leadbelly,The Buzzcocks,Joni Mitchell, John Jacob Niles,John Lee Hooker,Frank Sinatra,Johnny Hartman, Schubert, Kurt Weil, Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family, Woodie Guthrie, Cisco Houston,Mudhoney, Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee, Bob Dylan,Patti Smith, Yoko Ono, The Replacements, Mississippi John Hurt, Charlie Patton,Mississppi Sheiks, Reid Palley, Pixies, Etta James, are either of our lists combined even scratching the surface?
@catgumart yoko ono??? of all people in the world she's the one most likely to go to hell, beatles issue (a fuckin' huge issue!!) aside, her damn japanese voice creeps me out
@Chimbo65 It means shut the fuck up, because in my opinion, it's inaproppriate to assume avarage or not avarage youtube beach boys listener to have a stereotypical opinion like that of this song. Even if i had gay thoughts in my head now, i don't seek for your comfort
I was told by someone who met Mike Love that this song is about a whale. I heard an interview with Bruce Johnson that he didn't think this was a good song for the Beach Boys. Rubbish to that I say.

@MaximumSpiderMvC Is this seriously used in the Giygas song? Is that why they can't release Earthbound on virtual console?
surfingthechaos 2 months ago
@surfingthechaos
Well, it's used in the Cave of the Past. Listen to it carefully and you'll be able to notice the similarity.
And it isn't on the virtual console for nearly a hundred other things, like the New Age Retro Hippie theme sounding like Johnny B. Goode.
