This doesn't do justice to what they were as a live act. Saw them in '89 at the Jolly Boatman (now demolished) at East Molesey, & the guitars & dums were HUGE, really rocked the venue. She was a real star, short, pretty, brave & blonde standing out fronting the unit with real character & dazzling under the spotlight amidst a jangle of tamborines
Shame they ran dry of material & couldn't develop
This was from Going Live, a 'live' Saturday morning kids tv show, on air for up to 3 hours with several music performances, It had to be mimed because it was physically impossible to turn around a live sound check for each band in the confines of a live show back then, This is your reason for the mime, Top of The Pops, the BBC's flagship chart music show was the same. I used to shoot these shows, thank goodness for Jools Holland nowadays.
Regarding lip synching, they did not have a choice, not early in their careers, they were required by the suits to do that, so they sound like the record. They did the same to Cyndi Lauper early, and she certainly had in incredible voice by any standards. There is a video of Voice of the Beehive with the Blond singer wearing her Fender Stratocaster left handed, and turned over backwards, still pretending to play it, I think she was trying to make a statement there.
remember seeing them on The Concert with Spear of Destiny. Andrea was gorgeous back then, she seems to have minged out a bit within a year going by this though
listen to some proper live material and you'll be proved wrong. the band should not be critisized for miming, it's just down to whatever the show demands
The woman has a mic in front of her and she is moving her mouth as if she is really singing. That is deceptive. I'm merely pointing out something that might not be obvious to others.
loved this band to bits!all 3 albums great and they 'matured' into indie/grunge by erotica album. pity not much footage from that era cos the drummer jimmy hughes was class! bloss on this line up...nice kit but i dont think he ever hit any of the toms in any of the songs onthe first album lol!!!!
Its not like Americans didn't know these bands. Mainstream is crap no matter where you live. And if Nirvana killed music, why did everyone buy it? So isn't it the people that killed it instead of the band? If no one liked it Nirvana would have went nowhere.
A wonderful time for rock music. Darling Buds, Mororcycle Boy, Primitives, Voice Of The Beehive, Transvision Vamp etc. The return of British Rock in a vastly superior form. It's no wonder it was ignored everywhere - all the good stuff always is, else how was Pat Boone big in the fifties ?
Besides, there was no money in it for the Americans.
The Darling Buds were a great band they didn't get the fame that they deserved. Andrea had a great image and I know that many of us based ourselves on her image, even now! The songs were great and to finish off 'you've got to choose' the best song and also a great fan 19 years on since 1988!!!! I've even got my blonde bob because of her such a great style. see you
I can finally see that Brit-Pop in the 90's was inevitable. It was more than the 60's/70's mod revival that some journalists would have us believe. Obviously The Smiths had a huge impact on alot of these 80's C86/Indie Pop bands but just how much Brit-Pop owes to these C86 bands is immeasurable!
pressgang you couldn't be more right, this time period was wonderful. i hate to admit it, but nirvana were the deathnail for rock/pop, the grunge scene brought on angst and not the variety of emotions that were expressed, since then it's just been wah wah woe is me!
indie guitar bands was so much better then, all those late 80`s to about 94 was all a great time, Before the bands got to big for their boots, ( miles hunt)It was a great time full of doc martins and stripey shirts, army kit bags and bunking the trains,
This takes me back a bit, but best of all I've remembered why I hate Philip Schofield so much. The patron saint of patronising!! I've got some more "great stuff" like this, which I will try to upload as soon as I get my arse into gear.
Blossom!?............Ok!.The ban were great...Get back to-gether again!!!

lip synching. just listen to the voice. It's obviously enhanced. This woman would sound terrible live.

Deceptive?. Oh come on, you make her sound like some sort of criminal. What do you want her to do - stand there with her mouth shut.

No I want her to sing for real.
