It might be cool if I can see the angles at which bachi is making relative to the skin surface from probably 4 different directions. I think beginners to tend to make sharper angles. They try to pluck the string. Your book may have already covered, but I haven't see it yet.

Well, with tip/corner of your bachi, you press and move the bachi along the skin (literally "scraping" it) until you get to the string. Scraping the skin should make a light *scchhh* sound.
In actuality, at speed, rarely have I ever heard this done though.
