@Illuminas2000 Yes it is, almost entirely the same. I supose that Glass wanted to grab the concept of metamorphosis and put it into the composition. If you think about something that metamorphs it transforms in a circular manner, returning to its origin, even tough it may not be the same thing that transformed in the first place. May also refer to the circle of life and its transformations.
The origin is: metamorphosis I . It's sort of a poem inside the composition that carries a meaning! :)
why take anything away from her brilliant rendition of this music - whether or not she has a music sheet DOES NOT MATTER. Stop making a mountain out of a molehill. You people are over-critical and should play it for us without your music sheet. thank you Battlestar Galactica, you're great.
Okay this piece is almost like Metamorphosis 1. In iTunes Each MM costs 1€. You think I will Pay 2€ for the Same exact piece? There is only an extra chord in the beginning. But I can feel the emotions Each MM has - and cuz of that they are really very beautiful and Special to me.
@missiscookiemonster I'm a classically trained pianist, so it's possible I'm just over critical. But I did pull this out and truly had it memorized after the first time through, it's that simplistic. Again, it really is a LOVELY piece, there's no denying that. I'm just surprised it required music when this is obviously a performance.
Shockingly easy? Yes. But there is something to be said about simplicity. It's a lovely piece, unmarred by complication. That being said, I'm SHOCKED this woman needs the sheet music for this. I had it memorized the first time I sight read the thing.
@Chickibidi Don't mean to be offensive but i highly doubt you memorized how many times you have to press G and B, or when exactly to hit the octave. Or the exact timing, or any of the structural aspects.
The best choice, in order to be accurate, is to follow the sheets. Besides she played all metamorphosis in one go. I think you owe a little more respect to this wonderful interpreter!
I really don't understand why a lot of people are putting down Glass's work, I know its very simplistic, to tell you the truth I tried learning it today and it didn't take long for me to pick it up, however. It took me while to get right because i could never get it to sound exactly the way it was composed, that was before i tried playing it with passion and emotion, a note may sound like a note, but if you flourish it with passion and what your feeling it takes you to a whole different place.
@Hittokiwi My point here is, where living in a textbook world where everything is accorded to one thing or so be within a certain perimeter, music is beyond that it is beyond the notes and tempo and the rhythm, whether it be rock or classical, music is a meditation that allows you to stretch your emotion, passion, and imagination, not for it to sound fancy or stylish, but for it to have a meaning, results in a song that impacts the inside of you, which nothing can stop.
Technically speaking, this actually isn't a song. This is only because when it comes to definitions, a song is composed for voice w/ or w/out accompaniment (they go by many names, i.e. chansons, melodies, lieder, canciones, etc, but it all means song). Generally, instrumental compositions are referred to as "pieces", and most vocalists actually prefer "piece" to "song", as song nowadays refers mostly to pop and folk music.
@EriktheNog coulda been less confrontational though.
Look up the Qatsi Trilogy by Godfreid Reggio. The were all scored by Philip Glass. Pruit Igoe and Prophecies were in the score to the Watchmen. I highly recommend looking up his other scoring work to listen to ways that music can be used to tell an a-melodic story. That's why it is great music.

@AnnaSmileyyface I play it, and let me tell you, Metamorphosis 2 kills the right hand, Metamorphosis 3 kills the left hand. Props to this pianists, she's awesome.
I love Branka's interpretation of Philip Glass's work. Too often people think of Glass as very mechanical and unexpressive, but the way that Branka plays it shows a whole array of emotions and nuance that are inherent in the composition -- she brings it out so powerfully.
Heard this in A Canvas And A Struggle. Very wonderful piece, I really like Philip Glass. If you ever get around, watch the animation on newgrounds, awesome in a way.
This song was featured in an episode of BattleStar Galactica and most of us would probably never had heard of Philip Glass before then! Frak is a "curse word" in the series so that's where f16warbird is coming from I think.
Doesn't have much to do with the plot ? Are you serious ? After season 4 are you still saying that? Did you watch the wave of relief and relaxation that washed over Kara's face as this began playing? @EriktheNog If its not a song then what is it, Surely teachers or parents teach the little children what it actually is then. So tell me what is it or are you going to get out smarted by a little child eh??
@WhippyCorneto - Oh dear. Is a symphony a song? Is a concerto a song? Is a tune a song? You think all pieces of music are songs? I have already explained that a song has words. There are no words in this piece of music ergo it is not a song. maybe the music 'speaks' to you but that still does not make it a song. Even if it were called 'song of metamorphosis' it still would be a song.
@EriktheNog I know this is like 3 weeks after this whole thing but I remembered this and I just came across this. So your saying this isn't a song as well because your rules apply to this I guess.
@EriktheNog First off, who flagged me for spam? Second. If this isn't a song then what is it exactly? And all I was saying is that the website tried to claim this was 'All Along The Watchtower', which it isn't. Don't act like I'm off topic.
@EriktheNog I seriously feel sorry for you. You're only making yourself look like a fool saying things like that. Do you have any idea how many different genres of music there are?
Songs do not require words...AT ALL.
Music is powerful enough to evoke emotions.
I looked at your "recent comment activity"....all you do is post the same thing: "this is not a song because it has no words."
Can someone tell me the difference between Metamorphosis 1 and 5?
It seems interesting that with each part the music gains speed and the tonality becomes lower, the music seems to "evolve" and getting richer. But this 5th part doesn't make any sense to me yet.
Metamorphosis 5 uses one extra chord in the sequence at the beginning of the piece, which is the same as the extra one added towards the end of Metamorphosis 1. When you get near the end, Metamorphosis 1 incorporates in a chord progression, whereas this is absent in 5.
Other than that, they're exactly the same to my knowledge. You probably have to get the book to understand the differences.
I think Branka Parlic does a great job at performing the Metamorphosis. I'd like to hear more of her.
This has to be a very "romantic" interpretation, Glass himself plays with less rubato. The music doesn't need it surely? Is it that someone thinks the music is lacking and needs sweetening? In the same way you shouldn't play impressionistic music romantically, it is anti-romantic music.
Another person who found this music through Battlestar Galactica. Have to say, this music with a soul searching video sequence really does work. Lovely piece of music.
That's why I went searching for it lol. There's a Battlestar Galactica site I found which incorrectly lists it as 'All Along The Watchtower' by the way. The one thing that site was right about is that this song apparently plays heavily in Cylon monotheism. It truly is a lovely song, I'm glad I found it.
@Ocelot88 Same here! That song immediately caught my ear. I actually thought it was by Bear McGreary until I bought the entire BSG soundtrack and didn't find it on any of the CDs. :)
The real shame is that so many people think that this crap is great music... I can write 30 minutes of the same thing over and over in different keys too... Why does it sell and get famous when Philip Glass' name is on it?
@Ocelot88 same. i wish everyone was forced to watch bsg to realize how futile war is. watching bsg for the second time now and this very song absolutely hit me like a truck when i heared it in kara's room
This is my favourite piece of music from Battlestar Galactica. And then I found out it was made by Philip Glass and now I love it even more!.. Thanks for adding it!
I think that this performance is too fast and emotionless... she seems to not TRULY feel the music. Just because there are less notes on the page doesn't mean that they can be squandered like this.
I don't understand minimalist music, but it seems a bit like minimalist clothing. Is it supposed to be a slow evolution with gradual changes & few things comprising it? And are the group of Metamorphosis meant to be heard one after another? I heard this music as a soundtrack to an Yves Saint Laurent show and it worked very well. The collection balanced barbourism and refinement as a theme of the season, and the Glass was paired with exhuberent drumming.
As was said in a previous comment here about minimalist music, it is often repetetive and you may find the simplicity a little boring. However, i think that the whole point is to look beyond always wanting for complexity and technical brilliance because if you can then you will be amazed at how affected your emotions are from simple pieces such as this.
... Also, it shows that musicians who aren't technically brilliant (like me :) can still produce brilliant music (i hope :). Creating or finding beauty in the simplicity is just as much, if not more, of a feat than finding it in the obvious - songs where bells and ribbons dangle aplenty. (Also, this is ADwarfNamedDuck, accidentally posting under my flatmates name ^^)
Yes, the Metamorphosis pieces are supposed to be played in sequence. I guess it doesn't really matter though and Metamorphosis 5 is my favourite so I still listen to it by itself.
I haven't played piano in over ten years (and I only played for a couple of years), but this piece makes me want to start up again. It's probably obvious to a piano player, but I want to see the sheet music so that I can figure out which hand is playing which chords.
I do agree that what she's doing with her right hand does look a little over-the-top. I definitely think a bit of drama can make watching a musician much more enjoyable, but this is a bit much for me, personally.
"Over the top". Ha-ha! That's pfunny. Yes in minimalist music the left hand may be playing an uninterrupted melodic line in the midrange while the right hand is playing a line which suddenly drops 4 octaves requiring you to bring the right hand over the top to play base because the left hand is busy. Just go see the movie "Koyaanisqatsi" and all will become clear.
Umm, I'm guessing you didn't get very far in your piano playing but having hands cross-over is quite common. What do you think would be easier: keeping your left hand playing constant eigth-notes and crossing your right hand over for 1 chord or shifting both of your hands down (with a seemless transition of the eight notes from your left to right hand), and then shifting both of your hands back up again?
I am disappointed by the way the way the right hand is lifted up waiting to be employed in certain Passages. Al the good work of the peice is undone by this act of remarkable sillyness.
Much better to play naturally and not aim for the high stakes of showmanship.
Umm, noone thinks any higher of you for filling your comment with complicated syntax. Why not just say what you're thinking instead of trying to put big words where they shouldn't be.
You obviously have no idea how to play the piano properly. The more involved you are in your playing, the more emotion goes into the song. Look at the way her body is swaying when she plays. Her right hand is gently floating up and down the keyboard. She IS playing this piece naturally. It would be absurd to play a song like this while sitting perfectly still and with perfect composure.
her version is more emotional, european if i may say I'm Polish i get her more than Glass at the same time Glass' piece is cold

@Polopicolo Maybe start with the Low Symphony... The Anima Mundi Soundtrack is pretty great too...

@Mech610 - Technically this is not a song at all. A song has words. No words ergo it is not a song. Even small children know this.
EriktheNog 8 months ago
@EriktheNog If its not a song then what is it, Surely teachers or parents teach the little children what it actually is then. So tell me what is it or are you going to get out smarted by a little child eh??
WhippyCorneto 8 months ago

Mech610 8 months ago
@EriktheNog I seriously feel sorry for you. You're only making yourself look like a fool saying things like that. Do you have any idea how many different genres of music there are?
Songs do not require words...AT ALL.
Music is powerful enough to evoke emotions.
I looked at your "recent comment activity"....all you do is post the same thing: "this is not a song because it has no words."
Open your mind and stop being ignorant.

I would love to see him live, but due to the fact that I live in California, it makes it kinda hard to get there.

He plays once a year in Santa Barbara. I'm a student at UCSB and I have been blessed enough to see him play twice.

Can someone tell me the difference between Metamorphosis 1 and 5?
It seems interesting that with each part the music gains speed and the tonality becomes lower, the music seems to "evolve" and getting richer. But this 5th part doesn't make any sense to me yet.
tombotabata11 3 years ago 2
Metamorphosis 5 uses one extra chord in the sequence at the beginning of the piece, which is the same as the extra one added towards the end of Metamorphosis 1. When you get near the end, Metamorphosis 1 incorporates in a chord progression, whereas this is absent in 5.
Other than that, they're exactly the same to my knowledge. You probably have to get the book to understand the differences.
I think Branka Parlic does a great job at performing the Metamorphosis. I'd like to hear more of her.

this woman is absolutly unique...
i'm going to search more of her piano playing

This has to be a very "romantic" interpretation, Glass himself plays with less rubato. The music doesn't need it surely? Is it that someone thinks the music is lacking and needs sweetening? In the same way you shouldn't play impressionistic music romantically, it is anti-romantic music.

There are a few chords that differ in each piece. Its hard to tell the difference

Another person who found this music through Battlestar Galactica. Have to say, this music with a soul searching video sequence really does work. Lovely piece of music.
theuncharmed 3 years ago 10
Amen, only reason I found this piece of emotional beauty was because of Battlestar Gallactica.
Ocelot88 3 years ago 56
Same here! But I've always loved piano anyway, that's my excuse.
andyib632 3 years ago 5
That's why I went searching for it lol. There's a Battlestar Galactica site I found which incorrectly lists it as 'All Along The Watchtower' by the way. The one thing that site was right about is that this song apparently plays heavily in Cylon monotheism. It truly is a lovely song, I'm glad I found it.
Mech610 2 years ago
@Ocelot88 Same here! That song immediately caught my ear. I actually thought it was by Bear McGreary until I bought the entire BSG soundtrack and didn't find it on any of the CDs. :)

@Ocelot88 Its a shame that such great music can be obscure to so many

@mrjimmyos
The real shame is that so many people think that this crap is great music... I can write 30 minutes of the same thing over and over in different keys too... Why does it sell and get famous when Philip Glass' name is on it?
vampiracy 10 months ago
@vampiracy Because this sounds good, while the music you haven't written does not. That's really all it comes down to.

@Ocelot88 I do not agree with ya since i never seen Battlestar Gallactica, but i'm a huge fan of Philip Glass,
and i think this piece is a masterpiece...

The collection balanced barbourism and refinement as a theme of the season, and the Glass was paired with exhuberent drumming.
andrewjamesmacleod 4 years ago
As was said in a previous comment here about minimalist music, it is often repetetive and you may find the simplicity a little boring. However, i think that the whole point is to look beyond always wanting for complexity and technical brilliance because if you can then you will be amazed at how affected your emotions are from simple pieces such as this.
letzebuergdani 4 years ago
... Also, it shows that musicians who aren't technically brilliant (like me :) can still produce brilliant music (i hope :). Creating or finding beauty in the simplicity is just as much, if not more, of a feat than finding it in the obvious - songs where bells and ribbons dangle aplenty. (Also, this is ADwarfNamedDuck, accidentally posting under my flatmates name ^^)
letzebuergdani 4 years ago
Yes, the Metamorphosis pieces are supposed to be played in sequence. I guess it doesn't really matter though and Metamorphosis 5 is my favourite so I still listen to it by itself.
DrunkDog 4 years ago 4
The thing she does with her mouth in every metamorphosis and wichita and mad rushes is quite funny too !
Also, what she wears is quite.. ''funny''too
But an excellent compilation of the piexeces played in that concert plus she plays real nice ( different i.e.: more strictly, but nice !)

I definitely think a bit of drama can make watching a musician much more enjoyable, but this is a bit much for me, personally.
sillytwoshoes 4 years ago
"Over the top". Ha-ha! That's pfunny. Yes in minimalist music the left hand may be playing an uninterrupted melodic line in the midrange while the right hand is playing a line which suddenly drops 4 octaves requiring you to bring the right hand over the top to play base because the left hand is busy. Just go see the movie "Koyaanisqatsi" and all will become clear.
lonewolfintj 4 years ago 3
Umm, I'm guessing you didn't get very far in your piano playing but having hands cross-over is quite common. What do you think would be easier: keeping your left hand playing constant eigth-notes and crossing your right hand over for 1 chord or shifting both of your hands down (with a seemless transition of the eight notes from your left to right hand), and then shifting both of your hands back up again?
DrunkDog 4 years ago 5
As a musician you have to be able to express yourself freely, which is something I doubt you will ever manage to do.
DrunkDog 4 years ago 4
This composition is more various than others.
It has even 5 chord!
Cause it is Metamorphosis 5!
To listen a Glass' composition made of some dozen of chord, we have to wait for Metamorphosis n. 36...

is there anywhere on the net that i can get the music sheet of this piece?

I am disappointed by the way the way the right hand is lifted up waiting to be employed in certain Passages. Al the good work of the peice is undone by this act of remarkable sillyness.
Much better to play naturally and not aim for the high stakes of showmanship.
dreamcastII 4 years ago
Umm, noone thinks any higher of you for filling your comment with complicated syntax. Why not just say what you're thinking instead of trying to put big words where they shouldn't be.
Quantizzle 4 years ago
Fortunately, not everyone has three words of vocabulary like you apparently do.
Saruman38 2 years ago 2
You obviously have no idea how to play the piano properly. The more involved you are in your playing, the more emotion goes into the song. Look at the way her body is swaying when she plays. Her right hand is gently floating up and down the keyboard. She IS playing this piece naturally. It would be absurd to play a song like this while sitting perfectly still and with perfect composure.
