the way back, which is now in cinemas, meant to tell the same story but its not? how come they allowed that? in the way back they going to mongolia, then tibeth and finally reach india. while actually Jan went to alaska and then canada.
@bednim The Way Back did not tell this story. That film was based upon The Long Walk, written in the 1950s, and has had a very chequered past. Hence Peter Weir distancing himself from it.
@impossibleescape thank you for your answer. its 100% true. i did some research about the way back and it looks like another movie, maybe inspired by a true story.
@bednim I think you need to check out the internet. The Way Back is a fictionalised account based upon a book which validity has always been questioned, and since found to be untrue. In fact it was another man's story. If you have US$30m I'll make the film just for you.
Just to let you know I've commented several times. Hope you get the picture made. Sorry to you-tube if they thought I was not politicitally correct in my comments
@piekarnew1 This is just a pitching trailer for a documentary-drama idea. Now being developed as a full drama. See the behind the scenes "making off" clips at You Tube - FridgeProductionsLtd
Very important film. I applaud you for doing this work. These stories are true. My grandfather, Michal Jasinski, escaped from one of these camps and walked for months across Manchuria, Mongolia, eventually joining the British 8th Army in Persia. I have his official documents detailing the adventure. He died in Canada in 2003 but it is important for this memory to live on -- as there are those that have ben saying that these events did not happen because they are too fantastic.
God bless all those brave men. It is important to tell these stories, they must be told as a tribute to men like your grandfather and as a testimony in their honor.
Hopefully, to prevent future atrocities from happening.
@dH82ac Yes, Jan also fought along side the 8th Army in the Middle East, before Monte Cassino. Nothing too fantastical happens on the fringes of war. Some people are capable of many amazing things when they have no other option. Keep your documentation safe.
This video is simply a pitching trailer. A promo to enable funding to be gathered in which to make the full film. The project is currently being developed into a feature drama, with documentary material which would be intended for a DVD release etc.
My mother was 7 when she and her mother were deported to Siberia. My grandfather was in the Polish army and held as a German POW for 13 years. Eventually, my mother and grandmother made it out of the camp and she spent her formative years in the Middle East before reuniting with my grandfather in Britain after the war...It's really good to know that other people are still remembering this. It's important.
The GULAG regime is foreign to many in the West, myself included until I became involved in this project. Interviewing an ex-Pole who lived it for many hours over the past 2-3 years.
If successfull, the film will be an intelligent, action movie, bringing stories such as yours to a very, very wide audience indeed. Unfortunately, it will be nearly an up hill slog to get this made as it was for the men who made this escape and journey beyond.
My grandfather was in one of the labour camps when he was 14. He was the only male who survived in his family. His escape was not like this, instead the Polish government exiled in London arranged for the release of some prisoners in 1940 I believe it was. His gulage was in southern russia I believe. Its sad that our allies committed such atrocities.
Yes, Jan escaped in late 1940, ironically just before Stalin relased most (but not all) Polish prisoners from the GULAG to make their own way to the allied forces in the Middle East and England. Jan himself rejoined the Polish Army in New York and was shipped to North Africa. He went on to fight along side Montgomery's 8th Army and at Monte Cassino, Italy.
This video is intended as a pitching trailer with the intention of showing how a potential feature film of this story could look.
Yo my grandfathers name is Jan too! He travelled through the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and to London. He tried to enlist in the RAF but failed the eye exam. He learned to assemble car parts and now lives in Canada.
It's a common name, even Jan's brother was called .... Jan ! Both nicknames.
"Jan" was going to return home after the War, but was advised against it by the Red Cross, eventually settling in the UK where he also worked in the motor industry in the Midlands.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but is this actually a movie or not? Because if it is it looks kickass. The Russians were every bit as cruel as the Germans in World War Two.
Yes, it is. Very important. Fortunately, the 11th November Armestice is being remembered even more now than when I was a child. Paradoxically, support for the current Global military action is low in the UK, but support for the soldiers is very high.
The facts that have found there way into this script and the themes that are explored are designed to first and foremost to entertain - it is intended to be a feature film after all. However, in doing so, it is the intention to bring to the contemporary viewing public the plight that befell so many under Stalin's rule. A plight that unfortunately could so easily be repeated today given similar circumstances.

@colinchick69 It will probably knock it for 6 unfortunately. A pity since that story has dubious origins.

Wait until Q4 2009, we will have a new trailer based upon the drama treatment of this story.
Thanks for the encouragement.

There's a lot to learn. Film is in the early stages of development into a feature length theatrical drama (movie).
Check out works by Varlam Shalamov and Robert Conquest for more info on GULAG life and death.

Please let me know about the film. I would love to see it. I'm just now learing about these horrible gulags.

Search for Shalamov on Amazon. That is very good, and leads to others worth reading.
