I would not say this song is better or worse, just different. When I am in the mood for some Fray I love this song, when I am in the mood for some REM I love the original. Both versions have their own swings and roundabouts.

They're both good, but the original in my mind is better. REM made the song so isn't that how it's supposed to be? So i don't understand how a cover could be better it could manage to get up to just about equal but not better. 5* great cover but not as AMAZING as the original.

Well, I guess it's just in the order you listen to the songs. I heard The Fray's version before the original, and I think The Fray's is the better version, basically because my mind had compared to how much REM differed from The Fray's version. Like you guys, you heard REM's version first, so any change made to the original version is a negative one. It's all a subconcious thing, if you heard The Fray's version first, like I did, you'd probably think the same. They're both great songs, though.:D

Yes, R.E.M. is definitely better, however this cover isn't THAT bad. His voice is too sharp, and it actually kind of hurts the ear. Also, the treble is too strong, and the guitar takes away much of the original song's ambiance. I encourage anyone here to check out the original, should be the second link on the right under Related Videos.

Well the problem is it's a good tribute to the R.E.M. version-I mean its the exact same except for the guitar effect and the vocals- all the harmonics and little nuances are there, but that's the problem. It pales in comparison to the original simply because you can't really replace Michael Stipe. His voice defines some of the greatest songs effort. This is a great thing for the Fray to try but they really need to put their mark on the song rather than a faithful version of the original......

The Fray's style only works for certain songs. When they play this, it sounds strained to me. Its not smooth like the original.

Also, if you want to look deeper into it, r.e.m. wrote the song in tribute to andy kaufman, so they felt the meaning of the words they were singing. When other bands sing cover, the passion just isn't there, case in point.

i think without people trying other peoples' songs it's pretty lame.. it's good to see someone challenge himself with a classic song. some people only have a voice for a specific type of music. if this song was completely out of the fray's genre then i would agree with you. i like seeing bands do covers of other bands
