Gears of War 3 Review with Destructoid's Max Scoville

He described exactly the way I feel about Gears of War. I know it's a good game and I still hate it for some reason. It's like playing Uncharted with the next gen filter on, it just looks bad, every color has a gray-yellow-ish filter on, and the characters look like giant meatballs squeezed into an armor. I know they chose this art direction the make the game stand out, but it just doesn't work for me.

The thing about Gears of War is, you HAVE to read the books to have a complete understanding of the characters.

To hate on a cinematic game because it has too many cutscenes is ridiculous. The game caters to fans of the genre. I can't find how fair of a review it is if you rate down a game for lacking what it's not meant to have.

@RyanScfc1 I say right there in the review that if you're a die hard fan, this is the game for you. But not everyone's a die hard fan, and I write my reviews for everyone. "It's good if you're a Gears fan, 5/5" isn't really a responsible way to review games.

I feel the same way towards Gears as Max. It's a really ugly game with very uninteresting characters and by the books action scenes and aliens.

I felt Anthonys review was perfect. The praise of the excellent multiplayer, the criticism of the story ( or lack of ) andalso the criticism of the been here, done that feel.

The inclusion of female COGs kills it for me.

While the male characters do come across as an annoying Limp Bizkit parody of the proper (Warhammer 40K) space marines, I did get a homoerotic kick out of raping male torsos with the chainsaw bayonet. The idea that killing created [vaginal substitutes]. It's not unlike the concept of prison/war-homosexuality. There was a hidden freudian narrative, that Epic themselves may not have been aware of.

But there it is; actual vagina. What's the point?

I loved Gears of War. I love the predator quotes, the action movie cliche's, the polished gameplay, beautiful vistas, and multiplayer component.

But I also like Mad Men, NPR, and reading (hilarious that reading is now considered high brow). I don't see why Gears needs to be some stark social commentary or include realistic characters to be a good game.

For what it is trying to be, a blockbuster action movie, It's doing a great job.

I got exactly what I paid for and exactly what I wanted.

the introduction of female cogs taking on hordes of the worst that Sera has to offer didn't seem right at all. hardly any need for big fuck off muscle tanks if less than gymnastc women can take them down just as well. sort of falls on it's ass.

however, apart from the obvious i found the game to be rather enjoyable, boring at times but the overall experience was a great finalé to the trilogy, it's certainly more enjoyable than the previous two games.

maxwell, i agree that the story is worse than it could've been. one of my first impressions was gays of war or bears of war. a fine example is when cole says "cmon baird get on the swing i'll give you a push" however the part where cole is running through the supermarket where you pick up the baseball cap reminded me of gta: sa.

the visuals and art design are great with a sort of alabama hint.

while gears 3 didn't offer anything new and scary, for a horror genre gears 3 seemed teen thriller

Also, this movie WAS made. Someone's never seen The Expendables XD It does take itself too seriously, but i find the storyline excusable due to the gameplay. Plus, if you actually read the books the storyline is conveyed in a real dark depressing way that just doesn't come across in the game
