missing from this discussion is that the MPAA is a non government regulatory agency. There is no force off law behind the rating systems, its an agreed opon market standard. I´m assuming the german system is standard government regulation. Also its a demonstrable fact that the MPAA rates nudity harsher than violence, and rates male nudity worse than femal nudity, showing any cock, and especially an erect one is beyond the pale.

The ratings of G PG PG13 R & NC17 are given by the MPAA, which is not a government agency, and no one is legally required to enforce them. Mention that video games in Germany are quite harder rated as movies.
Fact is you cant buy the xbox game "Gears of War" in germany...

Advertising for these games are everywhere forbidden! Nobody buys a unknown Game. Indexed games are not profitable. So developers forced to adapt these games - voluntary censorship...

Its only one way: The Shop owner must hidden the game, so you must extra ask for them. But thats not profitable, so they dont do it.
Maybe you mixed up Gears of War with another game? Developers cut the game to circumvent the index.

"majorbreakfast" said American Pie was rated okay for 6 year olds. Wow really? No question American Pie was rated R due to strong sexuality, crude sexual dialogue, language and drinking, all involving teens. Unlike Europe, Americans aren't allowed to legally drink until 21. So.. maybe that's taken into consideration. (not sure). One example I did not agree with was Black Swan.. that was rated "R" probably for drug use and violence.. but I have seen much worse in many PG13 films.

In Canada the provinces each have their own systems but most are the same. I know a lot of movies are re-rated and are usually lower than American ratings. A rated R American film will be 14A here which means you can be over 14 and watch it by yourself.

@SubterraneanCitizen1 I think you are allowed to show nipples or other 'parts' on American TV, if its for medical purposes and late at night. Such as Discovery Health, use to have a lot of 'nudity' but it was packaged as medical, so it was semi-legal.

You forgot to mention that in Germany children under 12 are actually allowed to watch movies rated as 12 if they are acompanied by a parent.

The U.S. in much more comfortable with violence than nudity. For example, on many surgery shows, they won't show a woman's breasts during a consultation, but they will show everything during the surgery! O__o What is going on when bare breasts can only be shown if they are being cut up? Indigenous nudity is sometimes shown, but if the western host takes off her top too, they blur that out! ^__^

In Canada, we have 6 ratings: G-General; PG-parental Guidance; 14A; 18A; R-Restricted, and A-Adult.The last one, is pretty much only for porn. restricted is only people 18 and over, and every other one you can pretty much get into as long as you're over 13. The people at the movie theatres in my city don't really give a shit lol.

FSK 0, FSK 6, FSK 12, FSK 16, FSK 18 is ok. But there is SPIO/JK, this is the Highest Rating. Something like a Special Rating. SPIO/JK is a little Harder than FSK 18. You can Say FSK 18 is R and SPIO/JK is NC-17.

If they get naked in public that might get us some good laughs, but if they start beating up people for no reason...well, that's obviously much worse.

missing from this discussion is that the MPAA is a non government regulatory agency. There is no force off law behind the rating systems, its an agreed opon market standard. I´m assuming the german system is standard government regulation. Also its a demonstrable fact that the MPAA rates nudity harsher than violence, and rates male nudity worse than femal nudity, showing any cock, and especially an erect one is beyond the pale.

Huge difference you didnt mention: The USA ratings ARE NOT legally enforced. The ratings of G PG PG13 R & NC17 are given by the MPAA, which is not a government agency, and no one is legally required to enforce them. Some stores and theatres choose to enforce them voluntarily, but US courts have been clear that any attempt to mandate enforcement of a ratings system is contrary to the first amendment.

North America is not more permissive with violent content as you would think,It's just that full frontal nudity and sex is treated the same as "extreme violence & gore" by the (MPAA)
Japan is probably the most permissive society when it comes to both extremes in entertainment, Their retail stores will actually sell adult video games that give the player the ability to rape and molest virtual characters.

The only thing that really pisses me off about the ratings in Germany is that the logos have to be gigantic nowadays. And when they print it on the cover instead of putting a sticker on it, you sometimes get a CD where a quarter of the cover is the FSK logo.
