If you're right handed kick with your right leg if your left handed kick with your left leg. Because typically your stronger leg will be the farthest leg from the target and therefore will have more time to accelerate and thus will hit stronger. Spin back and kick someone in the face and you got a confirmed kill.
Correct me if I'm wrong though, but this doesn't feel like a powerkick. The way I was taught focused a lot more on getting the hip in, to follow through with the technique.
Then again, that might just have been my sensei (he's technically shihan now, but he'll always be 'sensei' to me... Weird how that works) - him 'marking' hits when doing light-contact low kick exercises hurt more than being full-contact hits by most others...
I'm a purple belt and the spinning back kick is pretty easy for me, but I was never taught it like this, ie how to keep balance, man that would have made it a lot easier, good video
Apparently, the philosophy on that has changed over the years. I was taught (in the 70's) to kick with the blade of the foot. Most schools now teach to kick with the heel, but I still find myself kicking with the side.
I understand....in today's teachings - a back kick (such as the one in the video) is meant to strike with the heel. A side kick - is meant to strike with the blade of the foot. These kicks are entirely different in striking mechanics.
Not sure in Karate but in TKD you can use the heel or blade of foot on side kick but back kick is done with heel only.
We call this kick only a back kick as there is really no spin only a 180 turn. The "back spinning kick" or spining hook kick in Karate is a 360 turn so we call it spinning.
All in all good break down of the kick no matter the term based on styles.
You are an excellent teacher. You are able to break down this complex body movement down into micro steps which allows for complete understanding of all the dynamics of this kick.
awesome advice! thanks man!!

it's a spinning side kick but I like it, apart from when your feet are together, which makes your base weaker.
