I didn't like the style of humor of his past films--a little sophomoric for me...until "Funny People," which instantly became one of my all-time favorite films! Not surprising given it was a departure from his usual style--his first 'serious' film. I now believe he is not just a popular filmmaker, but a potentially great one.

Judd Apatow is highly overrated. He releases 3 identical movies a year with the same cast, same storyline, and same dull and insipid plot. Why does everyone still consider him "edgy"?

I think he is actually just good at casting people, and letting them do what they do. He's not a genius, but hes also not a prick that demands the actors act out his vision 100%. He loves actors to improvise and make it their own. You have to keep in mind that most of Apatow's audience is too young or hasn't seen Porky's or Animal House (there are exceptions). The people who made those movies were legends then and now Apatow is a legend for making dirty, funny movies (lieke Animal House and Porky's). Besides, Judd doesnt need to rip off to make money. Freaks and Geeks was not a rip off. That was completely original. To say that he just reuses old movies is not exactly the best or correct thing to say.
