The pick-ups that Slash uses are what gives that sound. Also a Les Paul naturally has that strong thick sound where a fender strat has a more of a etheral sound if that makes any sense.

@princesseffie He uses distortion and for the fast part of the solo a wah pedal. Unfortunately amp settings won't get you the tone he uses. A gibson les paul has a far different and recognisable tone than any other guitar. What determines the sound of a guitar is the wood and pick ups. Les paul uses mahogany, which is a thick and heavy wood as well with alnico/humbucker pick ups to give it that thick, yet warm sound. I hope that helped.
