I think the band took a more HEAVY METAL path than the THRASH METAL path. I think this album in my opinion is very heavy. My favorite song is by far Jasons song MY FRIEND OF MISERY. It is a good album, but I think and will always think that if cliff was still in the band, the THRASH METAL wouldn't go away from the band. But at the same time, if Metallica didn't take the chance to do this album, they would still be under ground and personally, I wouldn't know METALLICA or MEGADETH.

I don't think you can be a true metallica fan if you can't dig the black album. They tried something different, if they would have kept doing the same thrash metal it would have been stale by the early 90s.

metallica spent over 8 months in the studio recording and writing the black album. that's longer then all the time combined with the 4 albums before. this was their worst album to date. one good song. a couple ok songs and the rest crap. the simplified the music to get more radio play and pander to idiots with short attention spans. then after this album they get rick and release a crap album every 6 or 7 years. SELL OUTS!
