Her finest effort in this role. These images are beautiful, and lovingly put together. It is obvious that you admire, respect and love the art of Maria Callas. .. Thank you!
Callas is my best teacher! Her work ethic was that of an obsessed or insane person, but it is what made her unsurmountable! She is a heroin for all who'd aspire to be an operatic artist and not just a singer of opera.
@zurriussII Thanks...This recording is truly remarkable. Much better than the 1957 recording with Serafin. Thank you for sharing this recording of Maria Callas in her prime!
A most-impassioned woman, in her characterizations. Sometimes, a few or more of her NOTES could be a bit, NOT in-tune, but her overall intentions, heart and musicality were very-strict ... Greek-like ... and the results are some of such, that we'll debate, criticize and remember ... for some of the best reasons. Also, imagine a world that had NO Maria Callas, in her virtues and flaws, in retrospect.
This is from the excellent 1954 recorded recital of Puccini arias. Maria sang Turandot on stage early on until 1950/51, then dropped it and recorded it in 1957 at La Scala with Serafin, a superb Elisabeth Schwartzkopf as Liu and the execrable Eugenio Fernandi as Calaf. The 1957 recording has good moments, but is very unever and Maria's voice is no longer so big. The fantastic 1972 Sutherland recording remains the overall best studio version, opulent indeed, Nilsson's comes a close second.
@numetutelare You're absolutely right but I think, in 1954 Callas had an Ideal voice: Not so big and not so weak as it later was. LOVE Sutherland's version but she's not Turandot at all (again, as I think). But, anyway, we should feel very very happy to have so many brilliant and excellent variations and interpretations of Turandot.
Tanti carissimi saluti !
So, the best singers will win through in the end :). “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Hehehe... you see ;).
Nobody needs quality! in the case of Callas you forgot a key aspect, the fact, that she go to bed with important persons to expedite her career. That's the reason why singers of the second row become the stars. You see .. hehe!
No other singer known to me ever made more of the words, intentions, or phrasing of anythig she sang than the sublime Maria Callas, who looms larger with each passing year in operatic history; I would go so far to say that she is without doubt one of the four or five most important figures in the entire history of opera.
@jp40798 I think that 1954 was the Ideal year for Callas. Her voice was not so dramatic as she had before and not so weak as it was in later ears. It had a fantastic top E and lower notes as well.
My God this was incredible!! What year is this and what was the location ? Is this a recording ? I had no idea Callas sang Turandot. This is absolutely fantastic. She must have been one of the all time best Turandots before Birgit Nilsson came along. I love Nilsson as Turandot but I now also love Callas as Turandot. I don't play favorites; both Nilsson and Callas had amazing huge voices and were both grand opera divas of the 20th century
A good testament to this music which is not really good for any one's voice, unless you're Birgit Nillson. But to understand Callas greatness a little more clearly, listen to Birgit Nillson singing this, then wait and listen to Callas. Nillson sounds like she's snoring through it by comparison. It's not just the metallic edge that make's Callas' version so thrilling, but the fearless thrusts up to fortissimo with no scooping that give full animation to the Princess' passionate spirit.
@sillyboydeux What do you think of Turner and Jones in this role? I ask somewhat nervously as both have warm associations for me but I take the risk as I love your insightful and entertaining crits!!!
@sillyboydeux What is so impressive about Callas' reading is the wide range of emotions she coveys. We hear a character telling a story that has great personal meaning for her. Callas makes the legendary "Ice Princess" a truly vulnerable woman that is to say a real woman.
Welcome back and thank you for posting this again. Turandot is such a great artistic achievement at the culmination of Puccini's life and Callas does honor to this aria. There will never ever be another artist with the voice, the emotion and the courage to perform this. A masterpiece and an absolute privilege to hear this aria sung by La Divina.
That was outstanding!

@trschaefer Thank you too. Although that recording has a better orchestra, here Callas has better voice.
