mmmm genesee beer so delicious and cheap, people think it tastes like crap because it doesn't make an appearance on TV anymore. I love this country; in order for something to be worth buying you have to see it in an ad on TV first, like bud lite and iphone.
@infernalphast9 I understand what you say there. I feel today's use of caricaturing people in cartoons often feels very generic and blank when it comes to what made it seem more inspiration back then regardless of how our standards were then.
@infernalphast9 Love Sam Adams & Guinness. Never had New Castle, will have to try it sometime. I've had Chinese beer (Tsingtao) and while it is "light," it has a nice toasty after taste that is great in the summertime.
Sheesh. My uncle guzzles that Genessee swill and last time we were playing Rummikub he kept getting shitty tiles and yelling, "What am I? Black?!" I couldn't stop laughing.
@sycoraxrock The real focus of the ad is that a man orders a beer in a Chinese restaurant. The fact that it takes place in a Chinese restaurant is all we really have to know to understand the waiter's questioning over why this man would want the beer in the first place.
@kissmusiclover It's a local/regional brew. These types aren't meant to be nationwide like Miller or Budweiser. There use to be a lot of them back then. I did notice Genesee getting sold at a gas/food store just a few houses away from me here in Toledo though.
Clearly the man loves his beer, but he knows the Chinese restaurant is not too likely to have pretzels or Beer Nuts on hand (and the only nuts in the place are used for cooking). Still, fortune cookies are a weird thing to eat by themselves. (This from a man who once washed down a brownie with a Heineken - don't ask.)
Incidentally, that special Hemlock Lake water the ad refers to?
That's actually plain city tap water from the Rochester, New York municipal water system, where the brewery's located even today just north of downtown. (Hemlock Lake is the source for all the city's drinking water.) Nothing wrong with it, but it's not exactly exotic spring water...
I not a big fan of PC myself, but PC is there for "some idiot" who does not know when to stop. :) Even though now PC nazi's don't know when to stop LOL
in conclusion PC is a necessity in society. Plus why would you want to unnecessarily offend particular group anyway??? Addicted to trouble and fight?
That's funny. Yeah. Unfortunately America has lost it's sense of humor thanks to the poison of political correctness. Try airing a commerical like this today & the PC nazis would crucify you.
Yup. People are too "thenthitive" these days. I'm of the opinion that if you're capable of being offended by something like this, you deserve to be offended. I really wish people would grow the fuck up and realize that being "un-PC" is nothing to get butthurt over. There are far more pressing issues.
Yeah, I hear what you're saying. And I wish that fags would stand still when you beat the shit out of them, too. Would've made my gang initiation a lot easier.
Look up the history of fortune cookies! Like chop suey, they're an American invention, the original idea came from Tokyo. China has never seen a fortune cookie. I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, but I think this kinda stuff is very interesting. (I used to work near a fortune cookie bakery in SF - yum - and learned lots about 'em.)
To my eyes, this commercial was trying to be funny but is very offensive. Who knows how future generations will respond to what we think is funny today?
Things like this perpetuate stereotypes... and stereotypes are harmful because they don't allow for the chance that some Asian Americans don't speak this way... and Your too stupid to know that.... I guess. I HATE "PC".
The old standard was pretty racist. They just didn't care back then lol. We're talking about the same people that decided to jail all the japs who were legitimate Americans citizens in the USA.
They woulda punched you in the face if you did to them then, and they'll do it to you now.
@Psychowilly why is it racist? Chinese people do say 'harro' instead of 'hello' and they do have slanted eyes, just like black people have big lips and frizzy hair. You can't portray a chinese man any other way
@vorpalspaz this shows uneducated and racist you are. people of central asian descent do not of slanted eyes. They have one eye lids while all other races have double eyelids. That is wut gives the illusion that they are smaller. And black poeple do not hae frizzy hair. Friz comes form a lack of moisture and is really only a curl begging for moisture.Black people have afro-texture tightly curled hair. And yes alot of us do have big lips but not all of us including me have them.
Awesome! Wish they still made 'em this bold. I'm from Rochester where they brewed the stuff and I never remember any of the commercials for the beer. It was always a good, cheap beer growing up but can't find it too easily anymore. Maybe if they brought back this commercial it would spark sales? ha ha
I would have broken that bottle over the chinks head then walked out
