I'm tired of seeing people obsess over the supposed hidden message in this song and ignore the perfectly wonderful lesson: At some point, you're going to have to place your security blanket aside and step outside your comfort zone to learn something new.
I use to love the sketch that came right after this were Kermit was asking Oscar what he liked about Public Television leading into the local station pledge drive.
This musical sketch introduced me to many experts of their chosen field, especially those who weren't as mainstream. I became familiar with great artists I would have never known (Celia Cruz, Itzhak Perlman, Pete Seeger, ). I don't know if this was CTW's plan, but they did a good job of exposing children to notable people (as well as regular celebrities).
Haven't seen this since I was about 7 years old. I used to have this on tape an I would watch over and over again. The only person I knew was Pee-Wee Herman.
Long live Pee-Wee Herman.
I also do remember the LadySmith Black Mazambo because it was the most "out there".
This was a really interesting version! I don't remember Ladysmith Black Mazambo (sp?) being in this skit. And I noticed, in the beginning, some of your translations for the deaf are wrong. Can you edit that in any way?
I didn't learn until much later that this is the second version of Put Down the Duckie with celebritiy verses added in. Originally it was just Ernie and Hoots.
wow. i saw this when i was 2 years old. i've thought about it a couple of times but this is the 1st time i've watched it in 13 years. awesome memories
Geez, everyone was so young in 1988. Jane Curtin used to be sort of hot. And is it just me, or has Danny DeVito's nose doubled in size in the past twenty years?
Does anyone know where I can get this? I have it on VHS but I seem to have misplaced it years ago. This was and still is one of my favorite Sesame Street specials. Brings back a lot of great memories.
Who ARE these people, and what were they paid to do this? I want to belive that they said "a cameo on Sesame Street? Don't bother with money, I'll do it for free!"
they did it for free. that was the whole point of it. because it was so closely related to the muppets, it was officially the greatest PR they could get short of having tv ads for themselves
Wyntom Marsalles, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Paul Simon. Top fucking Notch. (Guess this was filmed at the same time Graceland was being made. )
this is available on the retro collection of sesame st dvds btw. we bought it for our kid (and ourselves of course) :) Great vid. Has James Taylors Jellyman Kelly etc on there too.
It's about letting go of your security and stepping outside of your comfort zone to learn something new. You can always go back to where you started if you need to, but you'll never move forward if you don't let go of a few things for a while.
I wasn't aware Jeremy Irons was in this. That's very cool =)
Madeline Kahn. I remember her too. She was on a show on CBS called Cosby. She died in 1999 during their 3rd season. I remember they talked about how great she was in the first episode following her death. She was very funny and very talented. I miss her.
I love how this video has all those celebrities. Sesame Street was always very good at that. It's fun to see the ducky traveling around on the train and rocket. It reminds me of a story I heard about rubber duckys saving the planet. I saved it in my 'favorites.'
My eldest son ( who's 18 now )used to LOVE this song along with his little brother. They'd go bonkers evrytime this skit was played. It's a shame that some of those cameos are no longer with us; Madeliene Kahn, Celia Cruz, Joe Williams. Ladysmith Black Mombazo are awsome!
I'm 20 and I loved this when I was younger. The Muppets have always been cool to me. And the celebrities they have sung with have been awesome. I loved the African choir that sang they were awesome.
It's Ladysmith Black Mambazo and they are truly amazing. When my 13 year old was little it was her favorite part of this video. We had to rewind it over and over again until it broke. Thank heaven for DVDs.
davidvanwell: Hoots and most of Kevin Clash's other characters were removed once Elmo rose to superstardom and Kevin himself was promoted to directing much of the show.
Every time my ADD gets really bad, I tell myself to "put down the ducky" so I "put down" whatever is distracting me from what.... i'm..... shiny.....
Ladysmith Mambazo have got to be among the coolest guys on the face of the earth to have been involved with Sesame Street the way they were, in this and a few other productions. :)
Ahhh, wave of nostalgia. This was my favorite song of alllll time when I was a little kid. I love when ernie throws the duck and starts wailin' on that sax, haha
Haha when I was a kid, I had no idea who Pee Wee Herman was, but I recognized Keith Hernandez and Mookie Wilson immediately. Oh, for the Mets to win the World Series again...

wiley207 3 years ago 3
When they first introduced Hoots on Sesame Street, he instantly became a favorite character of mine. Why?
Because he talked just like Goriddle Gorilla from The Great Space Coaster.
Of course years later I learned that Kevin Clash performed both characters.
Kevin should've used this voice for Elmo too.
