haha! i've never been able to afford to throw away food:) i'm the leftover queen lol ! we home compost and recycle so i hope they start to charge by the weight for rubbish collections soon. mine weighs almost nothing! :) my partner works in a local village recycling and he can't believe what people throw away. the decadence!!!
Such a great point you've made here! All our food waste is fed to our chickens. We live in an urban area but have a good size yard to keep our birds(5). They eat everything we throw at them and we try to use everything they put out too. This has reduced the the amount of trash we put out each week. I know it's not for everyone, but it really has taught us that there is a whole range of possibilities out there for what we throw out.
Biodegradable waste such as extra food, paper, etc... should be composted. I wish there were more organizations in place that would gather up the waste food from restaurants to feed to the poor. Unfortunately laws about food handling don't allow such organizations to exist in most cases. It's really a pity.
imagine recovering 30 percent of your food expenses! avg home spends between $75 to $200 per week, almost $300/$800 per month on food. thats excluding restaurant gouging too! forget about farming! most people today are way too lazy, some cant even climb four flights of stairs without collapsing!
There's more than one way to interpret the data. He says that about 40% of the food produce in the United States isn't eaten. That doesn't mean it's not being used. Food has other uses. And why is wasting food a problem? Seriously, what's wrong with wasting food. Does it have environmentally adverse effects?
people are starving becaues of distribution not because theres not enough food. if we could easily give it to the people who need it, there wouldnt be hunger issues, but its difficult to distribute it
I am really starting to believe that a lot of people are very stupid ( you included ). How can you live with wasting food and knowing that children in Africa die of hunger ? Are you people really that retarded ? Can you really not see the problem ?
"How can you live with wasting food and knowing that children in Africa die of hunger"
It's not "Wasted Food" as the video puts it; it's just food we don't directly consume.
When we throw our food away other organisms eat it, then predators eat them (later we eat them).
Eating half an apple then freeze-drying it and sending it to Africa would not be the best solution, the best solution would be sending them food we've produced (pre-consumed) or helping them to sustain farms.
Actually I think about this issue often as well. In fact I was thinking about it just today when I went to a buffet.
It's preposterous that we are wasting 40% of our food when there are so many people starving out there! "Think about the starving children in Africa" has almost become a joke.
Americans probably send more surplus food to charities and good banks than any other place on the planet. be thankful for our abundance and the fact that we don't have to eat garbage.
I agree, while I do think that we need to work on conserving food there are many other countries that even worse waste problems. In India they live on top of rotting food. But as an American I do think that people have the attitude that if it doesn't effect them right then and now then it doesn't matter. Also many think that if they can afford to be wasteful it's okay.
" But as an American I do think that people have the attitude that if it doesn't effect them right then and now then it doesn't matter. " - this is a direct product of capitalism. Not caring about others, just about yourself. Maybe i'll never be affected by hunger, is that a good reason not to give food to others ? I don't do a good thing just it affects me indirectly or that i could benefit of the same treatment later. I do it because that's the way it should be.
P.S. America is by far the most wasteful nation in terms of food, water and energy, and its citizens are amongst the most cavalier profligates by the very nature of their lifestyles in contrast to that of the Third World. You know what I mean, all the people who leave the faucet running while brushing their teeth, leave the lights on for no reason, and throw away 1/2 of what they cook. And before you assume I must be some flagburning kumbaya neohippie, I am an American myself. :steps off pulpit:
I love how comments immediately deflect blame onto some other factor than their own personal accountability for wasting their own food. The whole point of this dialogue is not to focus on portions or abundance, but the active choices that are part of the business model and cultural paradigm called reality (i.e., hotels wasting upwards of 50% by weight of prepared meals daily, especially in NYC). Detractors will argue against this man, but he deserves credit for bringing awareness to this topic.
Isn't there a law saying you have to throw away the food, and can't give it away? For restaurants and stuff.
In my own house I toss a ton of food away that goes bad, but its because food is over abundant and the portions you buy are so large. No one buys small and what they need cause everyone wants their moneys worth.
as an American I know we throw out a lot of food however I don't believer like he said it's just an American problem so I'm glad he mentioned another country because when people think about things like this they ALWAYS blame the U.S. and we are by far not the only ones
prob true , i think i throw away about 30% and think it comes from wealth and phycological issues if it looks funny or not done in a perticular way in the bin it goes but i worked hard for it so i dont see it as waste if i buy a ferrari its my choice if i want to use it or let it rust in the yard,,,,,make food free for everyone and maybe nobody would waste it,,but cant see how it can be stopped
What if we had vehicles (or something of the sort)
similar to garbage trucks that we could... I dunno recycle the food with...
I know we have enough taxs as it is and I could see the problem but perhaps it is the train of thought and direction we could be searching. We know we have to take the trash out, what if we knew there was something like this?
Individually it wouldn't work (I'm gonna eat that later) but maybe with food chains.
Part of the reason we waste food so much is that we subconsciously realize how devoid of nutrition it is. We simply treat it as it's worth. Whenever I have a good quality cheese and leg of lamb etc. I treat it like gold and so do you.
That is a really good point. I wish there were more of these thoughtful, original comments instead of the mental diarrhea (seka1986) that I usually see.

Along with that you have people that freak out when mold appears on cheese (what do they think is in cheese?)
I used to work in an Italian restaurant, the amount of wasted food would always sadden me. 40% of the food that isn't served sounds about right, and then the amount of food that comes back on the plate too and goes straight to the garbage.
PapaKenny777, came from my years working in restaurants and knowing the unfinished food on the plate went right into the trash. I imagined humongous piles of food waste building up over time! I did a video story on a local restaurant who participates in a city program to take that waste and compost it for future gardens. Put Commercial Composting into YouTube's search bar and it will come up.
there's a good solution for the non fatty food waste, take it and feed it to worms. it's easy to do and just takes a bit of time get it started. plus it cuts down on what goes in the garbage by quite a bit. free soil and plant food comes out of it, makes it easier to try and grow a container garden in the desert.

It doesn't help that here in the US we over-produce food. There's such a huge surplus of corn that they have to keep finding new ways to shove it down our throats. It's inevitable that a good percentage of it would be wasted.

Its tough to use everything that you buy before it expires.
If you go to the store everyday to buy exactly what you need, you are wasting gas, so what is the trade off?
Food is a renewable resource. Gas isn't.

12oranges 2 years ago

@cookingupastory I agree with that idea - take apples for example.
Those that are deemed "pretty enough" to be sold in supermarkets instead of being chopped up and turned into applesauce because they were not perfectly shaped - they will in some cases travel tremendous distances and naturally some of the fruit will arrive bruised.
Once at the store, it is too late to send them to processing companies - but bruised fruit does not sell. So? The get dumped.
Same with the heat - yogurt, meat,...
