Great lesson, but I noticed you will skip the 4th beat sometimes. Even though your clearly say we should be playing it. I will listen to the song again and make sure it's there (or not there). Thanks!
instead of playing that suspended G twice the way you are in the main chord progression (as the 3rd and 4th chords), the third chord should actually have your finger one fret lower on the low E string, easier done with the thumb (i think that makes it a D add 9? not sure, you'd prolly know better than me, i just thought id point that out, not trying to be rude or anything.
@LilKarpat Learning to play with my thumb on the base note like Mayer was without a doubt the best guitar technique i ever learned. Makes bar chords so easy to play and add your own little fills within them. This song is way harder than it needs to be without using your thumb. I agree with what you said yet i guess some people do not have the hand size to do it
Firstly, great playing. One thing, you should learn how to use your thumb. Once you use your thumb more, playing all John Mayer songs are way easier. Example: the bass in the Gsus2 and the D/F# is played with the thumb instead of always having to switch between the index and the middle finger. Jimi Hendrix also played this way.
@ninthfret nope, just about every part in the song is covered here. John plays these chords with his thumb on top almost all the time, if that's what you mean by "not the way he plays it."
100% correct appart from the very last chord you show. as far i can remember John plays it by barring the 3rd fret and holds the 5th fret on his high e. other than that, great tutorial man. kudos

when he goes to the "Ab/C - (8)X(10)(8)(9)X" i believe it should be all moved up a fret. to be "(7)X(9)(7)(8)X" it sounds much better in my opinion.
spike0180 1 year ago
@spike0180 that's definitely right. This makes it a G/B chord, allowing a IV -> I motion from that one to the start of the next verse. great catch.

it's not an am before the G, sometimes he plays a D2/F#. just grab the second fret with your thumb before the third fret (G)
jbock89 1 year ago
Awesome lesson! I learnt the song thanks to you!
Could you please tell me which guitar are you using?
THANKS! :D

I think that there is an Am before the G in the Intro.

@cantstopfalling nop there a d with the f# in the bass instead of 2 times d/G in the bass is first D/F# then D/G
