Michael Keaton didn't come back because he didn't like the direction the series was going... He was right. Batman Forever kind of showed the lighter side where they had Val Kilmer as Batman. He whined and treated the other cast members rudely, and he even didn't talk to Schumacher for days after he told him to stop being so rude. He didn't come back for Batman and Robin because he didn't want to, and Schumacher didn't want him. Then George Clooney came in expecting a cool movie, then he saw the
i was so disappointed when i saw that movie, i didn't see many of clooney's movie, but since that date i didn't want to either, also joel as director was very bad, i think WB got control over him or something.
@canadianguy0987 i'm talking about the comic book version and keaton was most similar to this. haha i agree the adam wast batman is a classic. Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!
Of course alwasy have to know that there was very little creativity that was allowed to be played with, WB more or less hired Joel cause he was a yes man typ of director one who took every little detail that he was told, make it like Adam West, ok, make Bane stupid, ok turn Batman and Robin gay, u got it WB. Now make a toy line and sell sell sell, there is no way that as this film came together they thought it was a good idea. Just proving Hollywood eventually gets their way.
I can understand their trying to combine a modern Batman with the cooky, comical 1966 Adam West Batman..but it just went sooooo bad. One thing that bothers me about this interveiw is how he says the Batman needs to get over his parents death.......the Batman NEVER got over his parents death...
I thought George Clooney was fine.; "Take out the all the homoerotiscisms, bat-nipples, bat-asses, ice puns & all that crazy shit & I think 'Batman & Robin' would've been a lot better!" is my only gripe.
i thought that burton got the penguin right, its kinda stupid that in the comics hes just a fat guy in a tux with a big nose...burton gave him a very dark persona that the audience could take seriously instead of a campy villain like joel schumaker did
If Clooney was who he is in this interview in 1988/89...he would have nailed the part. No disrespect to Keaton, but he was a good choice for the older Wayne/Batman role.
@SamCarricoPictures How is Bale not the worst? He's overly dramatic. And his Batman voice sounds like an Richard Nixon with a sore throat. Clooney is second cuz he just didn't fit the role. Dude's a good actor though(Clooney, that is). Oh, and your comment didn't make sense.
@civilian8 Bales's Batman is more true to the comics than Clooney's. Oh and Batman has to disguise his voice so criminals can't match his voice with Bruce Wayne's. That's why Bale did that with his voice.
@moviereviews4life Chris O' Donnell did too: in fact he said he wouldn't let his kids buy Batman & Robin merchandise. Joel himself was also dissapointed by it.
That's one of the mistakes Schumacher made... Bruce Wayne NEVER gets over the death of his parents. And typically, you don't get over that in real life. It's what makes Bruce Wayne Batman. It's what drives him to do what he does. You take that away from him... that morbid, sort of brooding in the dark thing... and you destroy the character.
It's not completely Joel's fault for this. It's his fault for the directing, and lines. But what about the people who wrote this? Come on gotta follow an approved script. I just can't believe Hollywood approved of the script.
I hate this smug hollywood asshole. He is a good actor and very effective director, but he just comes off as so fuckin fake to me for some reason. His crappy portrayal as one of my childhood heroes made me sick.
you can tell clooney did not research the role of batman/bruce wayne when he talks of his character so lightly, like there is a lot more to batman other than the dead parents thing, its the only thing clooney mentions
Exactly why would you think he was the best Bruce? Have you read TDKR? When exactly was Batman ever tongue-n-cheek? Oh the crappy series that only worked for kids. hmmm, yea he was 'good' in BnR. He was the worst Bruce, Val next, Bale. Keaton was the only one to capture the pathos of being Bruce Wayne. Know the history. Batman doesn't mug for anyone.
I'm not even going to say "Get the fuck off of YouTube now" after a comment like that. I'm just going to point off into the distance and shake my head in disapproval.
Isn't it funny how "Batman & Robin" is considered like the worst film ever and "The Dark Knight" which is based on the same character is considered one of the best.
@stirigiy "Batman & Robin" is considered the worst "Batman" film ever and "The Dark Knight" is considered the best "Batman" film ever. Plus, it doesn't matter if they're based on the same characters, it's the portrayal that matters. Take Daniel Craig's James Bond, for example.
I think George was a well-balanced Batman. I think he under-acted it a tad much, but... I blame the script and directing, BIG time. If the script was MUCH better and less... Bloody campy, I think people would respect George a bit more for his role in batman + Robin.
hell yea tdk suit was TOOOOOOOOO futuristic...ive said it before n ill say it again...nolan would be better for a batman BEYOND movie. n what city were they in?? 4sure not gotham city
@GemStealth It wasn't too futureistic, it was practical for batman to have a suit that could move and not restrict him. Nolan's batman movies are far superior than anything Burton or Schumacher made.
Clooney is incedible. And he never even wanted to do this movie, the only reason why he did is he got a shed load of money and a contract with his agent that he never had to a do a film he didn't like ever again after this. So in my opinion playing batman in a movie thats rejected but all but a few (me being one of the few), in return for complete creative freedom sounds like a good deal to me
I think it spretty obvious that this interview took place before Batman & Robin was released, because I doubt that George Clooney would like to talk about a film of his that got trashed by both critics and fans. I feel sorry for him, because he really is a great actor, and he was an okay Batman in my opinion, though still noway as great as Micheal Keaton, Christian Bale, and Kevin Conroy.
not only does this loser know NOTHING of Batman and played the worst batman in history, but hes also the most cocky, talentless, smug, and phony actor in history. He just plays himself in everything and thinks hes the coolest thing ever.
I blame the director 100%. the director is the visionary of movies. He disregarded the true ROOTS of the Bat. This is why Joel SHOEMAKER got it wrong, and chris nolan and Tim burton got it Right.

This movie sucked soooo bad I don't know where to begin, it ruin all the actors careers who were involved in it with the notable exceptions of George Clooney and Uma Thurman.
George clooney was the worst batman that ever was! not because hes a bad actor! no, but because he was the same character in and out of the costume! he was bruce wayne all the time! then in the costume he was bruce wayne with karate! Worst atman EVER!
George Clooney is a good actor, but not suitable for Batman, that's all. Try to picture Brad Pitt as Spider-Man, it will NOT FIT as well, but doesn't mean that Brad Pitt sucks, right ?
DUDE! Clooney knows nothing about comics! he says that Batman should be over his parents death and that he should grow up?! no Batman never "grows up" if he grows up then he wouldnt be batman anymore. its that inner child torment that drives his to perform well in everyday task as well as being Batman! i hate it when the actors and directors take on super hero movies and spaz up a good series!
I respect Clooney as he's made some very good films but this interview just sums up all that was wrong about this particular Batman movie. It seems as though he and the rest of the cast, and probably the director too, didn't have much of an idea of what the Batman story was about from the beginning.
clooney is so dumb "most people i know go on to have normal day to day lives" ok who cares were talking about batman batman dosent get over it ok hes permanently scarred by these events thats what makes him batman!
anybody who seen their parent's being shot right in front of them as a kid will be scarred for life, If Batman ever got over it then I really don't see him being the caped crusader anymore.
I don't think so- he mentioned that he likes Marvel when he's asked about it, then goes on to say that Batman and Superman are his favourites. I'd probably say something similar because while I have nothing against Marvel and I think they do a lot of good stories, Batman and Superman are what it's all about for me.
yeah i agree with you there. he is a good actor. you cant blame his batman portrayal all on him, because there is a reason why we have directors. with the exeption of arnie and elle macferson, the acting wasnt that bad, it was the directing.
haha look how empty his eyes are, you can just tell he didn't want to have anything to do with "Batman and Robin" after it turned out as one of the worst movies ever xD
That 4 year old kid was me. What are you talking about? I only wore those batman clothes cause my father got me into it. My father's name is Adam West. And you're telling me I don't know about Batman? I don't think so, Clooney! I don't think so! Now I've grown up and I'm now 27 years old and a grown man (I grow fast). I will have my revenge. I will have it. I swear on my 31 year old son's life (he grows fast, too).
george has no intrest in batman or marvel or dc or comics he just knew it would have a big paycheck isnt it obvious look at his response about the guy asking him was he a comic fan he was the high school jock growing up
the fukn movie suked dissapointing! It wasnt Cloony's fault it was the director.lol even props were kinda like Plastic lol the icilcles even jiggle wen thy hit smthin.Basically the movie suked ass and dik!
Well, at least Georgie looked good in that bat suit. (Speaking as another guy admiring that he gets to wear that anatomicly correct girl-magnet get up). ;]

It seems as though he and the rest of the cast, and probably the director too, didn't have much of an idea of what the Batman story was about from the beginning.

even west made a better job, amazingly!

clooney is so dumb "most people i know go on to have normal day to day lives" ok who cares were talking about batman batman dosent get over it ok hes permanently scarred by these events thats what makes him batman!
devilluffe 3 years ago 5
anybody who seen their parent's being shot right in front of them as a kid will be scarred for life, If Batman ever got over it then I really don't see him being the caped crusader anymore.
Khufu718 3 years ago 9
he cant even tell the diffrence between
marvel and DC.
He said Marvel was the best but he kept commenting on Superman and Batman.
lol just proves how he knows nothing about comics
Y2JROCKFAN 3 years ago 9
haha yeah I noticed that, too
dddaaaannnnn 3 years ago 2
I don't think so- he mentioned that he likes Marvel when he's asked about it, then goes on to say that Batman and Superman are his favourites. I'd probably say something similar because while I have nothing against Marvel and I think they do a lot of good stories, Batman and Superman are what it's all about for me.

i loved marvel they were great.... batman and superman were my favorites..

DC u mean Marvel is the compant that made Spider Man,Iron Man,X Men etc

I think Clooney would have been good as Batman with a different suit and a much darker tone; as well as disguising his voice like Bale.
Trekkie1450 3 years ago
yeah i agree with you there. he is a good actor. you cant blame his batman portrayal all on him, because there is a reason why we have directors. with the exeption of arnie and elle macferson, the acting wasnt that bad, it was the directing.

I love how they talk about this movie so seriously even though it was a stupid campy movie.
lbgamer2 3 years ago 4
haha look how empty his eyes are, you can just tell he didn't want to have anything to do with "Batman and Robin" after it turned out as one of the worst movies ever xD

Like that bearded guy said one thing i loved about Batman and Robin was the stuff with Alfred.
It felt really emotional when he was dying and Bruce remembers when Alred raised him when he was a kid.
It felt really sad when Bruce said he loved him and he was gonna lose the man who was like a father to him and hade always been there for him.
