I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!! hahaha You are such and inspiration!! I have never been able to afford any kind of drum lessons so I just have been copying what I hear. Now I can actually learn technical skill, thank you so, so much for being as awesome as you are!:]
@SimenNaess The only thing I never liked about my set of CS series drums were the hoops on the kick drum. They're really frail and feel like they'll snap at any moment when you go to put a set of new heads.
Mike, i've been playing for twenty seven years and it's guys like you and Carter Beauford that make me realize that there's a lot more to playing than just what I know. thanks so much for taking the time out to make these videos bro!
I love this pattern, but going super fast throws you off, and I will occasionally break out of pattern and it fizzels. It takes a lot of practice. I already have been practicing this with a metronome the past 3 days and I've made some progress, I'm excited to see how much progress I make in another week. Thanks Mike!
How long should I practice variations of linear patterns before I switch to another? Sometimes I feel bored after a few practices with it. I always find myself not staying focused and go back into jamming with my favorite songs which is getting me burnt out on playing drums.
ok mike i really want your book but i have some doubts. Mmm first, when i try to buy it, comes out a window that says lulu.com, is that ok? and well i'm from Mexico city and i want the book, not a PDF of the book, so i f i do this online shopping, they send me the book at my door? and that would cost me more? and do i need a credit card or can i deposit the money on some bank account? Ok Mike, espero tu respuesta o invadiré todos tus videos con este comentario, ja!
it's 8th to 9th march and, this day, i promise to start watching you vids as lessons so that i can finally manage to perfectize my playing according to your techniques.. i will not, bit i will spent some time on my kit.. thanks mate, take care:)
Mike, what kind of microphones do you use for recording, and what's your drumset and cymbals? I don't know if you already have this on your profile or if a lot of people have already asked this question but I'm genuinely curious, you have an amazing skill and a beautiful sounding kit to go along with it, much respect my friend :)
This is the attitude I hope to still have at everything, especially drumming, when I'm older. Awesome videos, dude. They're funny, super informative and you got some nice nice chops. Plus, you're one of the only other musicians I've met that understands and interprets music in such a simple, but knowledgeable way. Bottom line, I'm gonna subscribe because I feel like these videos will really benefit my playing and thinking. Thanks for uploading 'em and continue to do so please.
Mike, I've been playing for25 years. I consider it an honor when I've been told by so many younger and older cats that I was there influence. I must say that they've taken what I've done and taken it much higher. The music that I play has always been more of groove and fills here and there never to the degree of what you do but I've always wanted to learn. Always intimidated at this newer stuff I must say your awesome nature has inspired this old dog to learn new tricks. Thanks for what you do.
@BurrBattle: Couldn't agree more! Dear BurrBattle i feel the exact same way. Been playing for almost 20 years now, and always orientated my drumming to what the band i was playing with asked or needed. Never got to practice that much throughout the years...but man!!??? Seeing Mike really got me going, and that dude on the drums inspires aynone to go a little fearther each day!! And with all due respect Mike, if u got there... why can't i?? :) Thank you so much for all ur great work!!
You can tell that Mike really loves teaching. He is eager to see how his teaching has an effect on everyone and what blossoms from that. That's why he's always emphasizing this idea of giving a blueprint and having us expand on it. Keep on going Mike.
@JuJuHouse24: Just wanted to say thanks for your comment my friend. Sometimes I feel like people don't fully understand what I'm trying to do with drumming education. You really get it. Thank you :)
I just got your book Mike, excellent work. Do you have any tips for spreading it around all drums? What's a good practice method for moving it all over the kit seemingly at random, as opposed to just moving your right hand across to the floor tom?
Ok, so I was reading some of the comments regarding the whole Garry Chaffee Vs Mike issue. I just wanna point out that I own Garry Chaffee's book and I've went through all the material.
Whoever owns it knows that it focuses on a completely different angle of linear drumming than does Mike.
Mike's video right here and pattern is as good "in content" as Garry's book and Mike's book is definitely complementary. So you'd be doing yourself a favor as a drummer in owning both books.
God i love this guy already. mike. Your obviously talented and its great too learn these beats and stuff you teach. but on top of that you are hilarious. "hey, check out this guy he's the king of linear grooves"!! Lmao
@thefightingmongoose4 Not even close. Not trying to make him look bad at all, trying to help others know where some of this originated. Ive told Mike on a few occasions (both on youtube, and in direct emails) that I'm a fan. As a pro, Mike knows that he's not always correct, and that sometimes criticism is warranted. Mike also knows that name calling over the Internet is just silly, and a sure sign of insecurity :)

So, I've been wondering for like EVER. What kind of rack tom stands do yo use? Because My mid tom like..falls off the stand thingy. It's really annoying. So yeah. If anyone could tell me, I'd be like. Exquistely happy. [:
@zZmekmekZzDrummerzZ I have one I bought from Musicians Friend, which has never failed yet. Strong holder!!! I use it for a 10" rack tom...It's "Gibraltar SC-SLRM L-Rod Tom Holder with Clamp"...just type that into Google or something and it will bring it right up. Runs about $25-30 bucks...Hope this helps
Everyone here who's stuck on Chaffee is missing the point of this whole video. I was truly expecting to read peoples' take on the pattern, KRLK RLRL which I thought was brilliant and KISS! Mike, people like you are why the drum community is growing in talent so much faster than ever. THANK YOU!
BIG SHINNY! I cant stop watching these videoss! and its 2 am where i am and i really wanna play my drums but then my mom would make me sleep in the garage anyways these vids are amazing ive learned so much!
@drumteacher76 Sorry, I didn't get the joke, especially when you constantly refuse to give the guy credit. I hope in the future you'll not give the impression that Gary isn't important to the linear drumming conversation...
In the meantime, who are some other guys who are known for linear playing, that you respect?
@JeniHarrod Constantly refuse to give the guy credit? Where do you get this from. In response to your comment Mike said "He's amazing", then after you show you're still missing the point Mike says "Gary is definitely a master". Yet you still don't think he's being given any credit. Should Mike start every linear instruction video he makes by bowing to Gary Chaffee? It's not like Gary invented linear playing after all. What's your beef?
@davedagreat69 I get it from Mikes own words, where he says "nobody gets credit for it". Linear phrasing as a system DOES begin with Chaffee. If you dont know this, then I urge you to do a small bit of research; pretty much every drum teacher and/or percussion school will tell you so. Does this mean that Mike has to bow to him? Absolutely not. BUT, for Mike to say that Chaffee doesn't deserve credit, is wrong, and misleading to people who truly want to learn all they can.
FUNNY DRUM INSTRUCTOR! hahaha....anyways..Thank you for sharing your knowledge in playing drums....It helped me alot in my playing...thank you for letting us know that we can get there...Thank you again I GIVE ALL THE CREDIT TO YOU!! Peace
You should be one of the greatest drummers in the world now. Not because of pure techncial skill, musicality or whatsoever (not that you don't have TONS of those), but because you take drumming as what it was meant to be: drumming.
You share your licks and hope people around the world will take your lick ideas and grow them into something even more. Not like some who want to keep to themselves so no one could ever copy them.
This alone, gives me absolutely HUMONGOUS amounts of respect for you.
you seem to be doing a lot less free drum lessons now but when the summer camps finish, will you be posting more? and im signing up for your live lessons soon! XD

@JeniHarrod You are really missing his point dude.

What's your beef?
davedagreat69 1 year ago
@davedagreat69 I get it from Mikes own words, where he says "nobody gets credit for it". Linear phrasing as a system DOES begin with Chaffee. If you dont know this, then I urge you to do a small bit of research; pretty much every drum teacher and/or percussion school will tell you so. Does this mean that Mike has to bow to him? Absolutely not. BUT, for Mike to say that Chaffee doesn't deserve credit, is wrong, and misleading to people who truly want to learn all they can.

@JeniHarrod I think Mike's point was simply, Chaffee didnt invent linear playing
drummerkingmike 1 year ago
@drummerkingmike The point I'm making is that Chaffee deserves an enormous amount of credit for it, thats it.

Godspeed and thank you so much, Mike. You are the greatest, if not one of the greatest gifts God has given us drummers.
Seriously though, I could go on and on. But words alone cannot describe my respect and thanks for you.
Thank you so much again, Mike.
Volentry 1 year ago
You should be one of the greatest drummers in the world now. Not because of pure techncial skill, musicality or whatsoever (not that you don't have TONS of those), but because you take drumming as what it was meant to be: drumming.
You share your licks and hope people around the world will take your lick ideas and grow them into something even more. Not like some who want to keep to themselves so no one could ever copy them.
This alone, gives me absolutely HUMONGOUS amounts of respect for you.
