  • The big shiny! I lmao'd. Great drumming though man.

  • Gonna back to basis and Muscled Memory it all!.... THAT'S A ROUGH!!!

  • Your harddrive Chinese? Lol! I almost spit my coffee at that part.

  • whats pocket drumming?

  • @abcasd1 "Pocket" is basically a fancy term for groove.

  • Alright!!!!!!!!!!! Lol

  • my drums seem to be constantly in cases lately because im gigging, so I'm literally doing this on my lap with my hands!

  • What's Gospel Drumming?

  • i love the look, sound, and sexual feeling i get from your drumset.

  • you GOTTA LOVE hitting the BIG SHINY (:

  • Nice Lesson! I salute you sir! Best drum teacher alive \m/

  • It's a pleasure to hear your drum kit. And your playing of course.

  • Thanks for the video! I'm kind of "fill challenged", it's one of my greatest weaknesses. I spent half the morning working with your video and I'm excited about the progress I've already made!

  • Hey Mike, hope you're doing well! I bought your book a little while back on linear drumming and I recently uploaded a video of me jamming with one of the patterns! Would love it if you could go check it out! :) Peace x

  • hey mike

I'm Ankit Relan from India here. Big Big Fan of your drumming and especially your teaching style.

Recently bought ur book online. Was really apprehensive before buying it as it was and it remains my only Lessons-Book till date

Some three weeks into practicing the stuff i can already feel a massive improvement in my bass strokes. My jam-buddies think i'm absolutely nailing those double strokes on single pedal all thanks to u man

Can play upto Exercise 7 at 160 BPM now :)

  • Mike, I did not know your hard drive is made by a Japanese company. "We shut down, goodbye." Hahaha awesome!

  • mike, whats the name of that song and band in the beginning of this video?

  • mike you kick ASS

  • I'm going to do one on the thing over their one on that wall and one on the big shiny thing. lol you crack me up

  • 6:40 ohh hell yeah!

  • I have your book!!!! it's soooo koool!!! :DDD

  • LOL "The Big Shiny"

  • I like your style of teaching!!

  • that's super cool

  • I'm just slapping the shit outa my desk learning this beat...

  • what kind of mics do you use ...?

  • Woho fu...

    That's spicy!

  • just wann ask: can you play a linear fill in a basic beat like (bum-pak-bum-bum-pak)

  • @gwapongmaniac Of course

  • HAHAHA! I love when you said "simple pattern" you put on a Southern accent!

On another note, I love your playing style man!

  • man this is great! i can find a new tech from these things. GOD bless.

  • I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!! hahaha You are such and inspiration!! I have never been able to afford any kind of drum lessons so I just have been copying what I hear. Now I can actually learn technical skill, thank you so, so much for being as awesome as you are!:]

  • Oh my.. This makes me incredibly excited to practice drums.

  • What size is you kit? Thanks

  • mike I from Italy, thank you for your lessons!!!! it open my eyes!!!! thank so muh really-

    Lucio Zampieri

  • @byrnemtb DW is custom drums, except for Performance Series, that is probably a Collectors Series kit, with is ALL custom ;)

  • @SimenNaess The only thing I never liked about my set of CS series drums were the hoops on the kick drum. They're really frail and feel like they'll snap at any moment when you go to put a set of new heads.

  • @12ealDeal thats not good...

  • Mike, i've been playing for twenty seven years and it's guys like you and Carter Beauford that make me realize that there's a lot more to playing than just what I know. thanks so much for taking the time out to make these videos bro!

  • Lol "big shiny"

  • wow, that really turned into an awesome beat!

  • @byrnemtb DW

  • 6:39 HELL YEA!!

  • Gotta love the big shiny... :D Cheers Mike!

  • I love this pattern, but going super fast throws you off, and I will occasionally break out of pattern and it fizzels. It takes a lot of practice. I already have been practicing this with a metronome the past 3 days and I've made some progress, I'm excited to see how much progress I make in another week. Thanks Mike!

  • 6:03 "somewhat fast" hahaha

  • your funny xD

  • well hell yeah

  • How long should I practice variations of linear patterns before I switch to another? Sometimes I feel bored after a few practices with it. I always find myself not staying focused and go back into jamming with my favorite songs which is getting me burnt out on playing drums.

  • ok mike i really want your book but i have some doubts. Mmm first, when i try to buy it, comes out a window that says lulu.com, is that ok? and well i'm from Mexico city and i want the book, not a PDF of the book, so i f i do this online shopping, they send me the book at my door? and that would cost me more? and do i need a credit card or can i deposit the money on some bank account? Ok Mike, espero tu respuesta o invadiré todos tus videos con este comentario, ja!

  • haha 1 on the big shiney!

  • this guy can hang in the gospel scene for real lol

  • Name of intro song?

    Pretty nice lesson, thanks man.

  • it's 8th to 9th march and, this day, i promise to start watching you vids as lessons so that i can finally manage to perfectize my playing according to your techniques.. i will not, bit i will spent some time on my kit.. thanks mate, take care:)

  • sorry, 9th to 10th..:Pp

  • mike, please come to israel for a clinik...

  • "hell yeahhhh!" hhahahah.

  • soo insightful!!

I always do those type of fills but I never tought about the ghost note on the snare and hi-hat alternations, sweet vid(y)

  • you just made that pattern your bitch.

  • Everything calm and nice and OMG A F*CKING DRUM SOLO at 6:18!!!

Insane man! And really, really good. I like the way you turn something so simple in a really fiery rhythm.

  • UTATA UTATAUTATUTATA LOL

  • the 32feel is even more awesome if u give a few rimshots random in the pattern. awesome!

  • I'm really enjoying Linear fills and the creativity flowing as I've been inspired with Mike's patterns and trying to evolve them for myself.

I can't post a video response here i guess, but i put up a video of me doing some linear patterns, and where I'm starting to take them:

    youtube.com/watch?v=0lQOl3EAnsA

  • Is the book still for sale? I can't find it on your website =(

  • Mr. Johnston, you are the best!

  • Mike, what kind of microphones do you use for recording, and what's your drumset and cymbals? I don't know if you already have this on your profile or if a lot of people have already asked this question but I'm genuinely curious, you have an amazing skill and a beautiful sounding kit to go along with it, much respect my friend :)

  • What is the tune at the start of the vid?

  • @pantsman6 It's called "Curtain Call" by Hero's Last Mission. Check it out on iTunes, it's a great song.

  • I play for 3 years now,

    and have drumming lessons,

But i dont have the feeling that im learning that much,

Should i quit drumming lessons and buy some books of this awesome guy,

    And learn for myself?

  • This guy is amazing !!!! and I have a question- do you know what's the name of song in the first 16 seconds.....please.....

    Thank you!!!!

  • This is the attitude I hope to still have at everything, especially drumming, when I'm older. Awesome videos, dude. They're funny, super informative and you got some nice nice chops. Plus, you're one of the only other musicians I've met that understands and interprets music in such a simple, but knowledgeable way. Bottom line, I'm gonna subscribe because I feel like these videos will really benefit my playing and thinking. Thanks for uploading 'em and continue to do so please.

    -alex.

  • Mike, I've been playing for25 years. I consider it an honor when I've been told by so many younger and older cats that I was there influence. I must say that they've taken what I've done and taken it much higher. The music that I play has always been more of groove and fills here and there never to the degree of what you do but I've always wanted to learn. Always intimidated at this newer stuff I must say your awesome nature has inspired this old dog to learn new tricks. Thanks for what you do.

  • @BurrBattle: Wow man, you just made my day bro. Thank you for taking the time to write that. It means a lot!

    Peace,

    Mike Johnston

    MIKESLESSONS COM

  • @BurrBattle: Couldn't agree more! Dear BurrBattle i feel the exact same way. Been playing for almost 20 years now, and always orientated my drumming to what the band i was playing with asked or needed. Never got to practice that much throughout the years...but man!!??? Seeing Mike really got me going, and that dude on the drums inspires aynone to go a little fearther each day!! And with all due respect Mike, if u got there... why can't i?? :) Thank you so much for all ur great work!!

  • thank you man

  • If you're thinking of buying Mike's book do it.

It's full of goodies and it's definitely the most useful drum book that I own to date.

  • thanks

  • one on the big shiny lmao i love you mike

  • i love this guy :)))))))

  • mike, you is the most great great great teacher in the world \m/

  • awesome! haha i lfmao at 4:16

  • You can tell that Mike really loves teaching. He is eager to see how his teaching has an effect on everyone and what blossoms from that. That's why he's always emphasizing this idea of giving a blueprint and having us expand on it. Keep on going Mike.

  • @JuJuHouse24: Just wanted to say thanks for your comment my friend. Sometimes I feel like people don't fully understand what I'm trying to do with drumming education. You really get it. Thank you :)

    Mike Johnston

    MIKESLESSONS COM

  • mike can make the simplest drum fill sound like the greatest thing ever played on the drums.

  • what heads does he use? they look already new. evans? aquarian?

  • 6:42 Well HELL YEAAAA KML

  • i need to subscribe to the live lessons again ..

  • LOL 6:03

    Somewhat fast..... *facepalm*

  • 4:15 oo tA TA UNNN TA TA TA TA

  • I just got your book Mike, excellent work. Do you have any tips for spreading it around all drums? What's a good practice method for moving it all over the kit seemingly at random, as opposed to just moving your right hand across to the floor tom?

Thanks, keep up the great work.

  • What's the name of the song in the beggining of the video?

  • dude can u play fast singles!:-)

  • well hell yeah! lmao awesome

  • Thank you!!!

  • that's paiste sorry:P

  • hey mike nice work! may i ask what pasite crash models you've used in this video? thanks!

  • XD one on the BIG SHINY!!

  • Mike, I just got your book. Love it. Thanks!

  • Beatles " In my Life" Linear!!!!

  • haha. one on the big shiny xD

  • very very very good, i was think that most drummers fill 6 notes per time, but now i can understand that the most is 8 notes same xD

    Thx God Bless Mike

  • hey mike just a little question.. where can i get the intro song?

  • Ok, so I was reading some of the comments regarding the whole Garry Chaffee Vs Mike issue. I just wanna point out that I own Garry Chaffee's book and I've went through all the material.

Whoever owns it knows that it focuses on a completely different angle of linear drumming than does Mike.

Mike's video right here and pattern is as good "in content" as Garry's book and Mike's book is definitely complementary. So you'd be doing yourself a favor as a drummer in owning both books.

    Peace

  • What s that song in the beggining?

  • Hell Yeah!

  • God i love this guy already. mike. Your obviously talented and its great too learn these beats and stuff you teach. but on top of that you are hilarious. "hey, check out this guy he's the king of linear grooves"!! Lmao

  • @JeniHarrod bitch

  • @thefightingmongoose4 Not even close. Not trying to make him look bad at all, trying to help others know where some of this originated. Ive told Mike on a few occasions (both on youtube, and in direct emails) that I'm a fan. As a pro, Mike knows that he's not always correct, and that sometimes criticism is warranted. Mike also knows that name calling over the Internet is just silly, and a sure sign of insecurity :)

  • hey mike, I may be starting the live lessons sometime soon. I can't wait.

  • Mike, please, please, please could you record some of the stuff with Benny Greb?! He's my idol, along with you of course ;)

  • I hate it when people say intermediate and then it sounds pretty darn crazy.

  • mike what cymbals is your stack made up of?

  • LOL the face he makes at 4:50 are funny

  • hey everybody, mike has 2 more vids up on modern drummer.com about linear fills based on his articles in the last 2 issues. thumb this comment up so everybody can see this comment and see the MD vids.

  • AWESOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • whoa mike. i have some of the books of jim chapin, dave weckl, thomas lang, david garibaldi's future sounds and in the pocket of dennis chambers.

they're like dust collectors here because i'm too lazy to learn 'em.

instead i download your youtube videos and learn from them, write the patterns you made then give them a style of my own just like what you're telling us to do.

i love your style. i learn better from you than the books.

you are the MODERN LEGEND :)

  • "Well Heeelllll Yeeeaaahh" LOL!

  • is "the big shiny" a new release from paiste?

    if so i want it!!!

  • hahaha invisible china cymbal at 5:56

  • @JeniHarrod at least we got another video out of mike all because you were being a cock!! n1

  • @JeniHarrod seriously dude. drumstick. get it out of your butt.

  • If you have any ghost note videos, could you give me the link? Cuz I'm like super horrible with ghost notes. I'm too aggressive. >_< lol.

  • So, I've been wondering for like EVER. What kind of rack tom stands do yo use? Because My mid tom like..falls off the stand thingy. It's really annoying. So yeah. If anyone could tell me, I'd be like. Exquistely happy. [:

  • @zZmekmekZzDrummerzZ I have one I bought from Musicians Friend, which has never failed yet. Strong holder!!! I use it for a 10" rack tom...It's "Gibraltar SC-SLRM L-Rod Tom Holder with Clamp"...just type that into Google or something and it will bring it right up. Runs about $25-30 bucks...Hope this helps

  • @JeniHarrod Dude, try some fiber in your diet. LOL

  • i love the way you break down for us tards who don't know what linear means lol

jenni harrod you make tards look smart lol

  • OOMTATAOOMTATAOOMTATAOOMTATA

  • Everyone here who's stuck on Chaffee is missing the point of this whole video. I was truly expecting to read peoples' take on the pattern, KRLK RLRL which I thought was brilliant and KISS! Mike, people like you are why the drum community is growing in talent so much faster than ever. THANK YOU!

  • BIG SHINNY! I cant stop watching these videoss! and its 2 am where i am and i really wanna play my drums but then my mom would make me sleep in the garage anyways these vids are amazing ive learned so much!

  • i finally got it but i keep messing up when i try to move to different drums :C

  • dude i think i love u

  • mike, what do you use for your stacked symbals?

  • Love the big shiny

  • :'( i wanna goooo its close to my bday

  • hehe at 4:15

  • @drumteacher76 Sorry, I didn't get the joke, especially when you constantly refuse to give the guy credit. I hope in the future you'll not give the impression that Gary isn't important to the linear drumming conversation...

In the meantime, who are some other guys who are known for linear playing, that you respect?

  • @JeniHarrod You are really missing his point dude.

  • @JeniHarrod Constantly refuse to give the guy credit? Where do you get this from. In response to your comment Mike said "He's amazing", then after you show you're still missing the point Mike says "Gary is definitely a master". Yet you still don't think he's being given any credit. Should Mike start every linear instruction video he makes by bowing to Gary Chaffee? It's not like Gary invented linear playing after all. What's your beef?

  • @davedagreat69 I get it from Mikes own words, where he says "nobody gets credit for it". Linear phrasing as a system DOES begin with Chaffee. If you dont know this, then I urge you to do a small bit of research; pretty much every drum teacher and/or percussion school will tell you so. Does this mean that Mike has to bow to him? Absolutely not. BUT, for Mike to say that Chaffee doesn't deserve credit, is wrong, and misleading to people who truly want to learn all they can.

  • you are a freaking jedi on that kit

  • @drumteacher76 hahaha agreed :-) and well put!

  • @JeniHarrod I think Mike's point was simply, Chaffee didnt invent linear playing

  • @drummerkingmike The point I'm making is that Chaffee deserves an enormous amount of credit for it, thats it.

  • FUNNY DRUM INSTRUCTOR! hahaha....anyways..Thank you for sharing your knowledge in playing drums....It helped me alot in my playing...thank you for letting us know that we can get there...Thank you again I GIVE ALL THE CREDIT TO YOU!! Peace

    greetings from the Philippines..

  • mike, you have the most beautiful hi hat i´ve ever heard! and benny greb camp should be online free! :) ;)

  • "4 on the rack tom, and then 1 on the big shiny" LOL

  • BENNY GREB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOT!!

mike im gonna come bustin your downs down to get in during the camp

  • BENNY GREEEB! WHUUUT?!

  • hey what kind of set is that i have mapex

  • @drumteacher76 thanks Mike. I've sen't an email over. Great vid by the way. I love anything linear!

  • im sorry! i completely read the thing wrong! haha my bad! xD

  • BOOM Bobs your uncle

coincidentally bob is my uncle lol

Another great lesson mike you show people that

even the small things in drums can be amazing.

  • very nice brotha....this helps for my study time...

  • Godspeed and thank you so much, Mike. You are the greatest, if not one of the greatest gifts God has given us drummers.

Seriously though, I could go on and on. But words alone cannot describe my respect and thanks for you.

Thank you so much again, Mike.

  • You should be one of the greatest drummers in the world now. Not because of pure techncial skill, musicality or whatsoever (not that you don't have TONS of those), but because you take drumming as what it was meant to be: drumming.

You share your licks and hope people around the world will take your lick ideas and grow them into something even more. Not like some who want to keep to themselves so no one could ever copy them.

This alone, gives me absolutely HUMONGOUS amounts of respect for you.

  • The Big Shiny is kick ass

  • Simple&GREAT! Thank You! ;)

  • love that ur doin another linear fill lesson, these are my favourite to learn from!! ur the man Mike

  • you seem to be doing a lot less free drum lessons now but when the summer camps finish, will you be posting more? and im signing up for your live lessons soon! XD

  • holy crapola, that is an effin sweet fill

  • dude this is just like something i made up today hahah but i do it slow

  • i love you mike! haha. God bless you!
