  • @JennaJCMarie That is no proof at all.

  • @JennaJCMarie So, if someone said the same statement regarding Zeus, you would consider that as proof for Zeus?

  • @JennaJCMarie

If you are hearing voices you need to go see a psychologist.

    That shit is scary.

  • @JennaJCMarie the more you learn you dont see God anywhere. I am not saying there is no God, but, the contradiction, the stupidity, the inmorality, cruelty, the primitive and tribe mentality (I am not a native, so, sorry my grammar)etc. etc. all show us the human creation of the Gods proposed, those ones I feel strongly that dont exist. Something else, maybe, but, NOBODY KNOWS, the ones that said that know, is a liar or deluded.

  • @JennaJCMarie if you would have been born in Iran, you'd say you can talk with Allah. if you would have been born in Classical Athens, you would say you have conversations with Zeus.what you say, only shows that religion makes people say and think incredibly stupid things.

  • @doyoublush- Perfectly put. Concept of god in any religion is only a simulation thought/program that runs in ones brain which over time it becomes real to them but there is nothing real about it. Sadly they ve been convinced without any proof that the simulation is real.

  • @JennaJCMarie did you ever stop to think that an all knowing all seeing god that can create a UNIVERSE wouldn't have to write down his message to you in a book that has to be edited and translated for over 2000 years? you don't think its mentally retarded for you to believe in god who talked to people 2000 years ago and hasn't shown up since? critical thinking is your friend.

  • @JennaJCMarie you keep believing. i will keep evolving.

  • "Then there is the curious story of the fig tree, which always rather puzzled me. You remember what happened about the fig tree? He was hungry, and seeing a fig tree a far off having leaves, he came if happily he might find anything thereon. And when he came to it he found nothing but leaves, for the time of figs was not yet. And Jesus answered and said unto it 'No man eat fruit of thee hereafter forever'. And peter sayeth unto him 'master, behold the fig tree which thou cursed is withered away'

  • @EdwardWongtheFourth

This rather convinces me that, much like at the end of the hitchiker's guide, that god, if he so exists, punishes us for the imperfections he gives us.

  • @EdwardWongtheFourth He doesn't punish us at all and He does not give us imperfections. God is ALL good, its humans and satin who brought evil into the world and became unperfect through the worldly imperfections. What God did to help us was send his ONLY son to come suffer with us. Yes, Jesus suffered (and still is suffering) along side with us. Infact since he was a christian he died one of the most painful death that there are. All for God.

  • @JennaJCMarie Prove it.

  • @DLandonCole lolol i always say that. but yet nobody has an answer yet other than "well the bible says its so" okay, so ultimate avengers #14 says spiderman is real so do we believe in him now?

  • @EdwardWongtheFourth being the son of god he should have known figs were out of season or that they didnt bear fruit, or just make another fig tree with abundant fruit by snapping your fingers lol

  • Thoroughly enjoyed your video. A good refresher to my early exposure to philosophy many years ago. I wonder if you would have anything as profound on Islam's concepts as well?

  • Great reading. Thank you.

  • Good video! I notice that atheists talk about Jesus and morality, which this video got into. But I wish more atheists would address whether Jesus actually existed or not, since there's no valid historical evidence to support it.

  • @raby760 If he existed: He was, in the long run, nothing more than a cult leader. Not saying he's another Jim Jones, but a cult nonetheless. What I mean by this is that he used "magic" to convince people of his faith being true. Examples include the "healing" of the blind and sick, resurrection of the dead, along with many other things.

If he did not exist: Then I guess he's nothing more than a fictional character in a story book. However the things he did are still important.

  • @mrtoontown, yes, I've before said and/or heard some of what you'd said. Except that I wouldn't say that the things he did are still important if he doesn't exist, because if he didn't exist then he didn't do anything.

  • @raby760 Phrased it wrong. "If he did not exist: Then I guess he's nothing more than a fictional character in a story book. However the things he did are still important in that they are the basic teachings of Christianity. Even if he didn't exist the teachings/lessons DO. As another example if people based their lives off the actions/lessons of, say, Raistlin Majere from the Dragonlance series the things they did based off his teachings WOULD be real, even if he isn't.

  • @mrtoontown, okay, now name some of the basic teachings of Christianity that you're talking about. You'll see that those teachings were taken from somewhere else. I can also show a lot of "teachings" of Christianity that I would consider to be "evil", and the story of Abraham is one of them.

  • I love this.

Basically the same points as many other youtubers here, but more elegantly phrased.

  • Fear, is the basis of ORGANISED religion. I see nothing wrong with having your own personal values, as long as you don't cram them down other people's throats.

  • Apologies in advance for lowering the tone, but does anyone else remember the Derek & Clive sketch where Peter Cook picks up Bertrand Russell in his taxi cab?

  • Well said and well ....

    First thumbs up from me.

  • i don't want to sound gay or nuthin.... but i love painting while listening to your voice....

    there, i said it.

  • @Ninjaculation Hey, whatever works. Besides, what's wrong with being gay?

  • @DLandonCole

    lol nothing.

  • @Ninjaculation Mwah

  • Ah, Bertrand Russel. always a treat :)

  • Great reading! An excellent thing to read as well.

  • Salute sir.

  • A christian is someone who believes Jesus died for our sins and that God raised him back to life. If you beleive this, you are a christian, if you don't, you are not a christian and still carry your sins.

  • @TsuKing Is it optional to think Jesus was somehow the son of the big supernatural sky god?

Born of a virgin impregnated by a fairy etc etc

  • @FLUSEM666

Yes, all you have to believe is Jesus. If Jesus says he is Gods son, he is. If he wasn't speaking the truth, God would not have raised him from the dead. Because then Jesus would have had to die for his own sins for giving a false testimony. However, Jesus is without sin and death is the wage of sin, so death could hold no power over him. So if you believe Jesus died for you and that God raised him from the dead, you are saved.

  • @TsuKing "You all have to believe in Jesus"

    Why?

  • @TsuKing You are truly delusional. Please assure me that if you start hearing voices or seeing visions that you will seek psychiatric help BEFORE going to the preacher.

  • @TsuKing "Yes, all you have to believe is Jesus. If Jesus says he is Gods son, he is."

So did more than 120 mythological figures throughout that regions history.

The truth is - Jesus is a myth. But hey, don't believe me - read the bible cover to cover for yourself.

  • dude - audio compressor keeps things in similar volume range. volume frights are the last thing you want when enjoying some stoned reflection.

  • Thanks for recording and sharing! :-)

  • Thank you. I enjoy Russell. Was given the book, mean to read it. Thank you kindly.

  • Brilliant essay, recently DL'd this to my ipod.

  • This is great! Thanks. ^__^

  • @ItsTheSuperFly Thanks, SuperFly. I'm going to get a pop screen after Xmas and I know I need to improve my audio stuff generally.

  • @DLandonCole Your voice sounds clear. This has more to do with program you're using to edit, or record your audio with. You should always watch your levels before hitting the record button. At the very least your app should have an LED style meter that gives you a clear indication of when the audio is too hot (hint: it's hot when pegging red)

Also, if the editing application allows it, you should be able to select all the audio track in your video sequence and either compress it, or normalize it

  • @DLandonCole just get a coat hanger and stretch some tights over it - no need to shell out for a fancy one.

  • @WiseMonkey888 Indeed, I have googled it. There's not a tremendous amount about it but he would appear to have advocated a stronger posture towards the USSR in the period after WW2 but before the USSR developed nukes. I'll look into it some more, but I would appreciate it if you could recommend any resources to me.

    Please drop the tone.

  • @WiseMonkey888 If I've made a mistake, I'd love to be corrected. If you could send me some more info, I'd be grateful. That's why I said 'I thought...'; I'm happy to be corrected.

I've repeatedly said that I prefer to be called Landon. Kindly respect my wishes.

  • Point 4 nearly blew my eardrums out. Bit of a sudden jump in volume there.

  • @MaxxPower101 Oops! Sorry about that!

  • Thank you

  • Disliked---but only because Russell was a prick.

  • @MrCadfael Would you dislike a video that scientifically explained the law of gravity because Newton was a prick? This isn't the best analogy in the world but it makes the point that the character of the author doesn't say anything about the validity of the points he/she makes.

  • @procritic09 "the character of the author doesn't say anything about the validity of the points"---If Russell had been willing to accept that, so would I.

  • @MrCadfael Well... Why? Why can't you accept it without Russell accepting it? I don't know a huge amount about Bertrand Russell but even if he did say that the character of the author DID effect the validity of the points he/she makes, why would that have any influence on you accepting that? A lot of pricks have made totally valid points and a lot of pricks have made valuable contributions to society.

  • @procritic09 Look before this goes on all day---This was a knowingly ironic comment. Bertrand Russell was notorious for ad hominem attacks, not just impugning the character of those with whom he disagreed but outright lying about them.

  • @MrCadfael And this says what about the quality of his arguments?

  • @ThePrimordialAtom His criticism on Pat's video was well grounded and correct- insinuating now that he's "diverting attention" is a fairly lame move, in my opinion. Instead of going ad hominem like this, why not try your hand at debunking Landon's "crap response"?

  • @WiseMonkey888 I thought he was a pacificst...

  • @ThePrimordialAtom See my answer to NoFaithNoPain.

  • Did you do this video because Christian's are an easier target than Muslims, or do you believe Muslims have another reason for not being a target, or was this by Chance and a Muslim video is next. This is not an accusation, it is merely a question as I could have got the wrong spin on it.

  • @NoFaithNoPain I did it because I recently re-read the essay and I felt like doing it.

  • @ThePrimordialAtom This is absolutely uncalled for, and has no ground.

  • Fear, yes, but greed also.

  • I have read the thing myself and I quite agree with most that was said.

  • Seems like a very short book.

  • @Aresftfun It's an essay and not a book.

  • You are more Christian than most of my Christian friends at least you have obviously studied the Bible enough to discuss it and you most likely live by GOD's Law so I don't see how you are not a Christian? Perhaps you are more into Mohammadism than Christianity but you definitely are Religious.

  • @NewChristianSoldiers I am not religious. I suggest you look for my three videos 'the ultimate blasphemy challenge' for confirmation of that.

  • Well that about covers it....

  • I've had people give me the natural law argument before, its frustrating that they don't realize how stupid an argument it is. I wish we'd never started calling them laws, if we'd used a different word that argument would never have come up.

  • So many arguements I've heard many times. i wonder if it's just because people are fans of Bertrand. I think though that it's much more likely that people just follow the evidence and come to the same conclusion, logic is like that :D

  • Nicely done.....Thank you

  • thx for this

  • Ha. Just made a video accepting that there is such a Christian Atheists, and Bertrand Russell disagrees. Awesome : )

I have to ask, how much of this do you agree with? I mean, I believe I can assume that you agree with most of it, but what about all of it?

  • more: the existence of God as a large and serious question. That's an odd position for someone that believes to determine such a thing the thing in question requires a definition. The definition is assumed to exist, by cultural allowance, but does not exist in any philosophical sense.

  • lol, I like to think this is in reaction to my calling you modern. Russel was also quite modern, for good and bad.

Greatest logician to ever live, perhaps, though there are a lot of people neck and neck for that particular badge of honor.

  • @pyrrho314 : ok, I'm joking a little but e.g. in detail, Russel is a little naive about things outside logic (inside logic he was an awesome barn burner of awesome), but outside, he took a modern-liberal attitude of accepted-among-philosophers truths... like the idea that in the old days christians reliably believed their dogma. But no, it hasn't been so since christianity was coopted by rome.

what a trick rome fell for.

  • Is this legal? Bertrand Russel died in 1970, which means the copyright in the US at least will expire some time after the sun expires.

  • @birkett83 The essay was given as a speech, which means it is in the public domain and needs only be correctly attributed to the author. This is only a re-performance, so copyright laws do not apply.

  • @deriamis I thought speeches could be copyrighted. Recordings of speeches can certainly be copyrighted, I'm not certain about the text of the speech, but it would seem bizarre if the text could not be copyrighted.

  • @birkett83 I was in error to use the term "public domain" - I truly do not know why I did. But even if the speech were copyrighted, the original performance was in an academic arena for the benefit of the general public. In general, when a noted figure delivers a speech in that manner, it is understood that any expectation of profit from the work is disclaimed, so there is no restriction on re-performance as long as it doesn't amount to plagiarism.

  • @deriamis It's still copyrighted, even if Russell's estate chooses not to sue it's breaking the law to distribute a derivative work without permission.

  • @birkett83 At least in England, it would be fair dealing under s.59 (public recitation) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

  • @birkett83 Whether it's copyrighted is not established, since under US law a copyright must be declared in some fashion - even if after the fact. I do not know if the family's estate has done that. But if they had a problem, all they would have to do is show that the copyright had been declared prior to the performance. Here in the US, there isn't much concerning copyrighted speeches, but political and academic speeches aren't generally considered for-profit, so re-performance isn't an issue.

  • @deriamis In US law a copyright notice is no longer required, it hasn't been required since 1989. But Bertrand Russell was English and the speech was given in England. English law has not required a copyright notice since England and Wales implemented the Berne convention in 1887.

  • @birkett83 I'm no copyright lawyer (nor am I a lawyer at all), so I wasn't aware of that. I simply declare my copyright regardless, since, as a programmer, it's important for others to know whom to contact for copyright release. However, it's been a well-established precedent that academic speeches are made without regard to compensation (that's why there's an honorarium instead of a contract payment), so copyright law is only relevant if a performer stands to gain financially.

  • Excellent reading. Thank you for putting this up.

  • @Eminemno1fan My pleasure!

  • Thank you for sharing this. I've been a fan of Bertrand Russell ever since I first stumbled across an interview he gave before I was even born. He was, in my opinion, a very intelligent and well-spoken man who makes his points well, while managing to not be offensive.

  • @Azurerosa : he also totally phucked up the philosophy of math which is quite nice.

  • @pyrrho314 - 'God Created the integers, all else is the work of man', that's my sentiment/ philosophy on Math, minus the god business of course ... lol (Leopold Kronecker actually first attributed this exact sentiment too i think)

  • I truly believe Christianity is in its last days. The internet is doing quite a number on religions lol. Most homes nowadays have the internet, which means a good portion of the world has youtube and can rate videos. The thumbs up/down ratio and comments tell the story. Its so 1 sided that most religious video makers avoid it and shut off the comments and ratings. After all, they are the masters of avoidance. A couple generations from now will look back at Christianity as the Era of Gullibility.

  • thanks landon so the arguments have been the same for the last 100 hundred years:) great reading

  • uhh..... "muhammedans" also think jesus was from god, though.

  • @volound Actually the belief is that Christ was a prophet but not the son of God.

  • @lesbianmilk Do they really believe he was a prophet? I was always under the impression that they believed him to be highly influential and a good person, but not a prophet/messiah.

  • @OneTimer1127 then you seriously need to read the qur'an. thats a very elementary mistake and you probably have many more misconceptions.

  • @volound Jesus, dude, I was admitting my own ignorance of it. I wasn't in any way trying to suggest you were wrong, I was a little surprised by it, that's all. Get down off your pedestal.

  • @OneTimer1127 i didnt think you were suggesting i was wrong. i was giving you advice. my only pedestal is that ive read the qur'an and you havent. it wasnt a pedestal until you made it one.

  • @volound It was needlessly condescending. That's all I'm going to say.

  • @OneTimer1127 if having researched (very slightly) a religion on which i choose to comment puts me in a position you feel condescended by, then thats not my fault or my intention.

i could probably have pretended it wasnt a big deal. but, i think i didnt because im frustrated by the level of ignorance that most youtube atheists have concerning islam. most people on here think the qur'an doesnt self-proclaim its own infallibility and that mainstream muslims dont think its perfect. gets annoying.

  • @lesbianmilk thats what i said.

  • Both myself and my brother were raised Christian, Church of England actually. We spent days in Sunday school, walked around on Christingle holding an orange with cocktail sticks poking out of it and yet we never developed that religious character our parents so wanted.

I'm not sure why of course, i was banned from Sunday school because i asked difficult questions, like "god says don't kill but he kills loads of people".

I guess i was odd and so is my brother :)

  • thank you for this...kudos bro :)

  • @MasterOhSo Thankyou :)

  • Great video, but please keep the volume level even throughout.

  • @16Cygni Yeah, I need to work on that.

  • Fetish worshipers?

Btw, I think that nowadays, with the powers/wildness of Catholic/Christian weakened/trained by the secularism in which it is submerged, I guess that Islam opposes a far bigger threat to humanity...

  • @TemporalOnline I think we'd probably refer to fetish worshippers as animists now.

  • Thank you for uploading this mate, great stuff presented with a good narrator voice.

  • @MightyGoldenBoy Thanks! A little bit of work to do, but I'm pleased with it.

  • Unaided reason? Were they serious?

  • I got this book out of the local library on monday, As it says on the back of the book.. The most robust and witty infidel since Voltaire : The Spectator.

May i recommend another excellent book: Away with all gods, by Bob Avakian.

You'd make an excellent AudioBook narrator Mr Cole. .. a well tempered voice.

  • @bonnie43uk Why thankyou!

  • Nice, i've never read the text before. I assumed it was still under copyright. I find it easier to just read than listen to books, but you should probably do a reading of The Age Of Reason (the second book) by Thomas Paine if you plan on making this into a series.

  • @optiuum67 I'm not ready to do something as long as a whole book! I might do Pericles' funeral oration next.

  • Thanks for your work of posting this, I really appreciate it.

  • @eydos My pleasure :)

  • normalise the audio.

    levels all over the shop

    kthxbai

  • @artifactingreality i agree

  • @artifactingreality It's my first go at doing a multitrack, multisession recording. I know I have to iron out a few things.

  • @artifactingreality sure made me jump when section 4 started. I was just sitting here, eyes shut, listening and taking it in and suddenly Landon shouted at me :)
