sorry to say that the princess royal has shut down, i loved it in there,. being a lad from preston but brought up in (expensive) cornwall. i was amazed at the fact that a pint of john smiths was only £2.20, whereas the average in cornwall is about £3.20, cornwall would be bearable if they still had boddies on draught and there local ales weren't so strong, there is no decent session beer down here at all!, helppp! from a northener trapped in a southeners body haha.
Sorry, I have no photos of the Pig and Whistle. I have black and white photos of the Green Dragon in 1952 with cars of the period in front and I have b/w photos of The Lion on Higher Parr Street. Will dig them out and put them on.
Sony in all their infinite wisdom decided to pull the original sound track I had for this video due to copyright... I see they managed to stick an ad on for it even though it isn't the correct song.... tossers!
Pubs used to be safe places where you could enjoy a social get together and a good pint. You did not have to suffer obscene language, loutish, thuggy behaviour and the only music was live - a piano and a good night out.
Pubs closed because they reflect the descent of this country into the sick, sad state it is now in.
It's safer and cheaper to stay at home, drink and watch TV.
I saw it all.
My parents were tenants of the Green Dragon, Pig and Whistle, the Lion and the Union.
Haha, i see you'd been to some real rough areas to take those photos. Don't go round the pickled egg or the vulcan at night unless you want to get stabbed, or better yet just stay at least a mile away from Parr and four acre at all times.
disagree with the reason number 1 from strongtheme. the reasons pub are shutting is because of the credit crunch and the fact people can get drunk and have a good time at home withtout the costly expense of going to the pub. i agree tho, top video, ive supped in shoe and the cherry many a time haha good times :-)
pubs are shutting down cos they are all the same old shit hole places with no entertainment and shite service. So what we have a smoking ban!!! Landlords need to try harder to get people in. But they dont, so pubs are boring places.
why just video sutton, what about the rest of the town!!!!come on, show a true picture. thogh i do agree that far too many are closing. 3 reasons 1/ the smoking ban...2/ the consortiams that own these places screw the landlords to the floor (sign of the times) and thirdly the governments move to make people home entertain and gat trouble of the streets but we can do something about that if we get off our arses
en alguno de estos pubs vivio mi abuelo james dorning , no se cual todavia pero estaba entre st. helens y sutton,19 peasley cross line beer house i write from argentina
Thanks so much for making these videos before most of these places close up shop! I'm from US but I plan on visiting St Helens sometime soon... Its sad to see whats happening to the pubs over there right now :(

You wouldn't happen to have any old picture of the pubs you mention (or any other pub) would you?
The Pig & Whistle in Sherdley Road would be much appreciated :)
