Isn't it amazing that Amos n Andy is politically incorrect, but they can show Good Times and Sanford and Son, both which are much worse??? I don't want TV putting anyone down, but let's get some perspective here!
The cop shows Daddy loved. I just barely remember Boston Blackie. Think that was short lived. Dragnet went on for 138 years. LOL! Everybody watched Lucy. I couldn't stand Roy Rogers. I don't remember Amos N Andy on TV. That probably didn't last long either with them in black face. That was the era of doing away with that type of thing. I remember Burns and Allen and I Married Joan. Those 2 and Lucy were my favorites.
SORRY, But the Dragnet is from the late 60s Dragnet, not 50s. The I love Lucy opening is also not original. the original did not have the heart, that was added for syndication later. The heart co vers up the Phillip Morris cigarette advertising.
@RovingCounter wow...is that right? The heart covers up the philip morris logo? I am 57 years old and I don't think I ever remember the PM logo or ad there. I sure do remember lee marvin hawking Pall malls during M-Squad.. I seem to have a very good memory for TV related things even back to about 2 or 3 years old. I think my favorite vintage TV show is probably 77 Sunset Strip
I get so damn sick and tired of The Damn NAACP saying that "Amos & Andy"is a put down of the blacks..a real put of the blacks..is hearing Chris Rock cussing and insulting races in his stand up act.
Hello. Not pulling your leg! I think you have a confusion here about the difference between PERFORMANCE and SONGWRITING and PUBLISHING and changes in notions about what numbers ASCAP or BMI are accounting. Many songwriters who never covered their own songs at all are still credited with writing a hit song. A great example of a man who made more money because others covered his songs is Chubby Checkers. For singer-songwriters who are not performers, the money is in having a song covered.
@CTNWB You're blowing smoke. You claimed you got a gold record for writing Freeze and I pointed out that it's not possible. Did you think if you jabbered about royalties and Chubby Checker I'd forget about that imaginary gold record? Think again. If you think I don't know anything about writing and publishing, think again.
Was wondering if you have anything on BEN ALEXANDER, African American from Harlem, saxophonist, did a lot of studio work in New York. Was the musician on my hit Freeze. Please contact us at station CTNWB or on our blog WES BRYAN -MY LIFE IN MUSIC! Thanks Wes
@CTNWB Tony & Joe had a minor 1958 hit at #33 with a song called The Freeze (written by J. Saraceno and T. Savonne) on Era Records. I don't remember the name Wes Bryan and I can't find you in any of my national charts books. When was your hit and where did it peak on the charts?
@CTNWB Song titles aren't copyrighteable but no, the song you mention by S and S isn't the same one. If you can go over to my blog, Wes Bryan My Life in Music on Google, we have posted the song as well as the link to the ebay demo, and a picture of the record. I received a Gold as a songwriter on the song (other people also recorded it) though I also performed it. (Some songs go Gold over time though they don't always make the low numbers on the charts.) Wes
@CTNWB You're pulling my leg right? It doesn't matter how many artists recorded your song, if it didn't make the chart it wasn't a hit.
The writer of a song doesn't get a gold record unless at least one single of the song has been certified gold by RIAA. Songwriters didn't even qualify for gold before 2007 and writer certification isn't retroactive either. Did somebody record your song and sell over 500,000 copies since 2007?
@CTNWB Ben Alexander was also an actor who portrayed Officer Frank Smith on Dragnet opposite Jack Webb's Joe Friday when Dragnet first appeared on TV. As an aside, Jack Webb also played Joe Friday on the Dragnet radio program ... just as entertaining.
Why can't they do an Amos and Andy movie with known Asian actors portraying Amos and Andy as Latinos? I mean if its a beloved franchise but people won't stop being "sensitive" about its history, regardless of baby boomer suburbanites doing unnecessary condescending favors in keeping it away, why not have others do what okies and cajuns aren't allowed to acknowledge? British Heavy Metal parodies Nazis like The Producers do on Broadway. Buddy Holly played the Apollo. My questions not unheard of.
@geezer1946 And nitely about midnite tv went OFF -- overnight one saw only "test patterns." And tv was all black & white until the mid-1950s or so, when (at first only) NBC-tv became the first network and channel to broadcast in color, and so adopted as symbol the peacock, which became their logo for years.
many of these were radio shows before going to tv miss listening to old time radio and of course tv today cant compare to the great days of the 50/60's although i have to say i couldnt stand i love lucy
Amos&Andie was one of the funniest shows on TV. Its a shame they took it off the air just to be politically correct. funny is funny no matter what race you are.
I remember most of these tv shows. But, Boston Blackie I never saw. It was shown before or when I was born. I was born in August 1952. . But, most othem I remember fondly. I wish they could all be shown again. I like AMOS AND ANDY. Too bad they cancel it because the NAACP thought it was streotyping blacks. They could have used it as a door way to be a postive force for black people back then.Roy Rogers was one of my favorites I woould love to see his show again.
Dragnet- Remake with Ackroyd did not trump original: Friday with wingtip brogand shoes. Lucy-later revealed scenes were shot before live audience. Apartment waiting for Mertz's to enter. Blackie-Handsome
Tayler as Blackie not around as long(2 tv yrs). Would have been a re-make candidate.
Amos and Andy-Hall Johnson Choir back ground for many stories yet singers are unknown should hit the books as one of the best ever in film or tv.
@AshburnStadium . . . And an autographed picture of Andy Devine/I remember bein' buck-toothed and skinny/Writing fan letters to Sky's niece Penny/I wish I had a pencil thin mustache/And I could solve some mysteries too (closing line) Ah Brylcreem, a little dab'll do ya/I could do some cruising too.
Your right, dandy. Ben Alexander was his partner in the early fifties shows.
Unfortunately, it's easy to find representations of shows from the era, but not easy to find the exact film. I put these together for those of us old enough to take a walk down memory lane and enjoy. At least badge 714 and Jack Webb are the same.
And the "Dragnet" announcer who introduced the show was none other than George Fenneman, Groucho Marx's straight-man announcer on "You Bet Your Life".
Love the theme music in the beginning, what's the name of it please? You have some great classics up here. I can't say I remember them, but I grew up very exposed to Classic television and movies.
ooops.....Harry Morgan as Bill Gannon was not on the 5os version of Dragnet - only on the revival in the 60s.
