i wouldnt mind gillard denying gay marriage if she did something about climate change: but politicians should do SOMETHING: it seems all political parties in this country are conservative
I believe that such a method produces objective results which can be referenced to. In the long term, this would produce far less attention I believe. Human rights and such are wishy washy metaphysical concepts - people want something which they can grasp (say, a list for example), see how the evidence for and against has been weighed up and evaluated, see their logic, and then go, oh ok, well at least now I understand how they came to this decision and it seems pretty reasonable.
I like the way Iowa state went about deciding on whether to allow gay marriage - they looked objectively at a bunch of factors that assessed how they would affect the state, decided objectively that these factors would cause no harm, looked at their constitution in terms of religious opposition, found it void, and then having seen objectively with measurable indexes if you like that there was nothing stopping gay marriage, voted in favour of it.
I marched in a same sex marriage parade here in Brisbane recently in support of my friend. ^_^ he's awesome, but I like what your saying that what you fought for you now have. it's sad that gays and lesbians can't marry at the moment but you have to admit it wasn't long ago that the whole concept of a same sex relationship was practically illegal. It is nice to see that we have actually come pretty far since then :)
Civil unions and marriage are not the same thing in terms of status, by limiting same sex couple to civil unions and by not allowing them to be called marriages it sends a strong message that same sex relationships are of a lower status that hetero relationships. However civil unions are step int he right direction but they still discriminate against same sex relationships by denying them an equal social status to hetero marriages, that is not equality even if it is an improvement.
Advocating violence against them only makes us look bad, and it doesn't solve anything. The best way to fight them is to talk to your friends, coworkers, family, and win them over by living your life openly and honestly. Then people will identify with your struggle and start to see the religious fundamentalists as the intolerant small minded idiots that they are.
I really liked this update comparison of gay rights in the USA vs. Australia. It was also much better than the previous Too Gay Focused video, which I felt was unfair and bit too harsh towards gay & lesbian people who choose to shop and socialize in gay owned businesses.
It's refreshing (and thrilling) to see someone such as yourself so involved and knowledgeable on this important topic. I am especially impressed with how you have taken the time to pay attention to the progresses in a country that is not your own. If only we Americans would look outside of our own borders like you do.
PLS check my TAMMEE'S ROOM vids out! They're about a gay couple who've adopted a child.

Wow this was an interesting vlog Rob. Very informative and thanks for updating us all on the Gay Rights movement. As far as centrelink payments go I wouldn't bother registering a same sex relationship heaven knows it's hard enough getting money from the government for study right now. But having said that I suppose if one day they allow Gay marriage here we must abide by income and taxation laws and until that happens we must be honest and forthright. Damn Big Brother!!
Thanks for replying to my tweet. I'll share how i feel on here as i can't do it in 140 characters on twitter.
Re: Centrelink
It's unfair to recognize gay couples in one respect and not the other. If marriage or civil union was legal centrelink would have to asses us couples anyway. The new same sex reforms will take away from gay couples without giving them anything in most cases.
When you spell out all of the arguments like that it just seems so obvious. So like the only things keeping us from our rights are ignorance and prejudice.
Preventing same sex marriages doesn't benefit traditional marriages?!? Incredible.
I'm surprised they didn't try the gay-marriage-causes-the-public-schools-to-make-your-kids-gay argument that was so persuasive here in California. 'Cause that was so rational!
My favorite observation by the Iowa Supreme Court was under Promotion of Optimal Environment to Raise Children: "The statute ... is under-inclusive because it does not exclude ... other groups of parents such as child abusers, sexual predators, parents neglecting to provide child support, and violent felons that are undeniably less than optimal parents."
The U.S. should give EVERYBODY a Civil Union & leave it to them to find a church (or not) in which to marry.
Rob, keep in mind that the Iowa State Legislature is still free to amend the States Constitution that would limit marriage to opposite sex couples. In Iowa this would take 2 years. There is also an a similar amendment to the US Constitution floating around but there is always great resistance to amending the US Constitution frivolously however.
this kind of vid is why i subscribed! it's great to get an articulate take on queer rights in australia. also, i'm crossing my fingers that here in california we get a ruling as favorable as the one in iowa!!! cheers!
WONDERFUL Vlog Rob!!! Thanks for the info on Australia... I never gave it much thought as to what you guys are having to go through like us in "The States" . I guess I just figured that you (like the rest of Europe) is ahead of us in this topic by far. Very informative! Thanks!
many opponents to gay marriage in the states are republican. However, many republicans, who traditionally support the government staying out of the private lives of citizens (small government) are starting to put gay marriage in this light of privacy invasion rather than a religious issue. I think that, in another fifteen or twenty years, we'll have gay marriage at the federal level. Yay us! I'm only a few hours from Iowa now anyway!
One speech before the Vermont Senate vote which passed the same-sex marriage bill was by 17-year-old James Neiley from Charlotte, Vermont. See the YT video of it on the NewsPoliticsNews channel - or search for it's reference number u95a3Kp8lkg
Yea! Mr. Rob totally loved the update, considering I'm from IOWA (yeah!). I downloaded the legal brief and the Court's Opinion and thought it was fascinating. All the experts that testified and legal arguments for and against, either way it's a great day in Iowa. I'm not ashamed of being called an Iowan anymore! :)
Great Post Rob. I would like to hear more about the laws & protections GLBT people enjoy in Australia. Obviously, you can't paint a common picture here in the USA as each state has different laws & the only federal law is the Defense of Marriage Act which screws GLBT people all across the USA.
Wow, Rob. Thank you for organizing and simplifying the information for us. I am so happy that people like you or me or any other viewer are starting to gain the equal rights that we deserve.
Yeah... it looks like the beuty queens and the voters here in California are on about the same wave-length.
I used to be so proud to live in the progressive state of California... one of these days we'll be as advanced in equallity as flyover states such as Iowa! LOL!
I know right! well, I live in Georgia so I don't expect gay marriage anytime soon here, but who would have thought that Vermont and Iowa would have gay Marriage before more progressive states like New York... strange things!
Good video nicely presented -- up to your usual high standards! BTW, even the Republicans [!] these days are talking about the need for their party to change its long-held position of opposing gay marriage.
Had not heard the details of the Iowa debate. Thanks. The big news was Vermont. It is the first time a state legislature voted to establish equal rights for gay marriage. They even overturned the governor's veto. This is truly a landmark moment. The people's representatives said equality for all. New York may be on the brink of joining the fold. Justice is coming one state at a time.
hey, im aussie too, and found this SO informative. so much i didnt know about the rights of my own community, within my own country. i sat wide eyed, with my mouth open, for the whole video. im not sure if i blinked or not.. lol :) there was some awesome news in there. baby steps, baby steps.
"Having to register" your relationships with a government body called "centerlink" sounds like a scary proposition to aspire to. Orwellian. But that's another subject entirely.
The gay movement in America is destined to make great progress in these coming years. It's indefensible to restrict the rights of any group of people because another's prejudices. The more progressive views of the modern generation insure that the movement will continue forward until it is not an issue anymore. :)
Centrelink is basically just the financial aid service in Austraila (a government agency). Those on benefits are assessed differently if they are single as opposed to being in a defacto relationship (living together). So it just means we can now be considered in defacto relationships (which comes with a lot of associated rights)
I figured it was something like that from the way you spoke, although it still has a slightly ominous ring to it. I'm always suspicious whenever a government agency says you have to register with them for any reason, even if it is for our own benefit.
Some states & communities here have similar programs where if you register with them your domestic partnership status, they will afford you "special" rights. Of course our ultimate goal should be for true equality, & not a special status. :-/

I'm not sure if Iowa legalized Same Sex Marriage.
I think what they did was rule the Same Sex Marriage was not against the law under the Constitution of Iowa.
And, as you pointed out, they could find no reason to now make it against the law or amend the Constitution to forbid it.
In a sense, they said it has always been legal, and their ruling simply acknowledged that fact.
I'm in Minnesota just 5 miles from Iowa, but I confess I haven't been following the issue closely.

Hello guys,
I'm from the Middle East, where I've seen women FORCED into marriage, USED, ABUSED, BEATEN and SILENCED.
This is something GRAVE we've forgotten about here in the U.S.: TRADITIONNAL MARRIAGE.
Please go to my profile to hear this new appraoch to Gay Marriage, based on understanding the REALITY of traditionnal marriage.
THIS IS HOW WE WILL WIN!
