I love how Disney takes a character (Frollo) that was originally messed up but not as self-righteous and evil and basically turns him into Javert (of Victor Hugo's other work)
At school I had to watch this whole movie in French! (Obviously in French class, and it was because this movie originated from French literature). It wasn't that great, to be honest.
You know, I was JUST thinking the other day that I wanted to watch this movie without the gargoyles and was prepared to fastforward through them, but you did the work for me! Thank you!
I think they chose to do the gargoyles because in the books they describe Quasimodo as talking to the statues and such in the cathedral. But I do agree they were a bit cheesy.
You are a genius....gargoyle scenes are unnecessary. They were funny sometimes but not really...ever....in fact I take that back they can all burn.,IN HELL FIRE!!.
I have a question i'm making a video me reviewing this movie for my channel and i would like to use this video and the other one I hope this would be okay thank you so much .
When I first watched this movie as a child.. it creeped the hell out of me! it was too much for my brain to handle.. the only thing I loved about this film was the freakin Gargoylessss!!
But now I finally recognize the real plot.. such a Masterpiece really!!.. and I can understand why you all might hate those gargoyles
You know, when I was little I never truly noticed "how" the Gypsy woman died until I realized she had hit her head hard. For a long time I was confused as a kid.
I would have to agree that while the film was great. The gargoyles despite the fact that one of them was voiced by funny guy Jason Alexander from seinfeld. They were out of place. If they wanted gargoyles in the first place they should have turned to the creator of disney's gargoyles instead..
The gargoyle's are needed you guys to lighten the mood it's for kids. Among the murder and immorality that still takes place they need some comic relief for the kids.
@paramorerocs16 for a child, but now that we are an adult or teenager.... this edited version is like a relief for our little conditioned-to-be morbid minds.
I must say that Gargoyles also used to get on my nerves from times to times and maybe killed this darkness a bit although this story does have a lot of darkness in it. But you also have to keep in mind that this is made for kids, and the point is in make them have fun, not scare them instead. ^^That's why the end is also changed from the book where everyone actually die....
I think the movie is great, even with the gargoyles. I see how you would find them annoying, but all they were doing was providing comic relief, something very common in dark plays or movies such as this one. Even Shakespeare used comic relief in his works! They are there to change the emotion to keep you interested, and stop you from becoming depressed with the story. I think that they are a great addition in this movie, but good job on your edited version(:
Is there anywhere I could download a quality fan-edit of the entire movie, sans gargoyles? I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid, and I'm certain I would enjoy it without those fuckers. If people hated Jar-Jar Binks enough to release "The Phantom Edit," there's got to be a no-gargoyles version of Hunchback floating around! Thanks for the short clips, regardless.
To answer the question about Quassi being white with red hair while his parents were Gypsies, when someone is malnourished their hair can turn red and since he was never allowed to leave the bell tower it is assumed that he never saw enough sun to get a tan (when you see his baby hand at 2:05 it is pale). It is also possible that his father was white and that the man with his mother was her brother or friend. Another possibility is that she is not his mother at all and she adopted him.
While I do share you opinion that the gargoyles make the film more "chessy" and they are completely unnecessary, remember that this is a film for children (I'm not so sure with all the sex desire and deaths, but it is supposed to be). Every disney children film from the 90's has the equivalent kid friendly characters (Timon and Pumba, Abu, Mushu, The fish from the little mermaid, the rats from cinderella, etc.)
@mariomasv True, but those kid friendly characters actually work in the film. The Gargoyles just feel completely out of place. For example Paris is burning and they....make a joke about it.
I love this movie! It's so beautiful, and it's fantastic that Disney made a movie about this story. I get goose bumps because of that opening song.. Especially when the choir starts singing. Even that song alone makes the movie worth watching haha.
@FRETbeGORNE I didn't see any male deer getting warmed myself. Phoebus was in the book, hence his inclusion in the movie. The gargoyles were named after the book's author, though they did kiddy-fy the movie. It's a dark story, and Disney took MANY liberties with it. Like... Esmeralda NOT being burned at the stake. No such happy ending.
sorry but the gargoyles helped make the film unique and hart warming i think if anything thebes (if i had to get rid of any chrater it would be him) was uncessesory sorry to say
I didn't mind the gargoyles a that much, but I didn't like them either. I used to fast forward through most of their scenes, back when I actually had the movie. Thank you for posting this!
This is such an underrated film. And like everyone else has said, thanks a lot for removing those damn gargolyes, the one real flaw in an otherwise excellent movie.
This book is way darker than this movie. I guess Disney had to give an ending where everybody didn't die in the end to make it family friendly. However, I fucking love this movie. Frollo is by far the best Villain.
I remember watch this and being like.... Why isn't this film up there with the best of them!?!?! =D ........... Then they came.. the gargoyles D= I said... "Oh. Now I understand"
@Skunkoon98241 It appears he's edited out all non-plot-relevant gargoyle bits. So he had to keep the "feast of fools" bit because otherwise the audience wouldn't know that plot element, but he's deleted the worst of their pointless slapstick. Which is a bloody brilliant idea because they really detract from the atmosphere. Having the audience go from watching a murderer contemplate drowning a child, to watching buffoonish gargoyles drop buckets on each other's heads, is a jarring shift.
I could listen to this type of music every second of everyday! Now all we got is this rap shit... thank god for YouTube and people like @dextermorri for uploading them. THANK YOU!
I love Frollo because he is such a complex character. just watching the movie again now that i am an adult it amazes me that even when i was young i loved the intricacies of his personality.
I believe that in the movie Paquette is the gyspy you see at the beginning (Okay, so Paquette's not a gyspy in the novel as for as I know, but this is only a theory), Paquette is the mother of Esmeralda a.k.a Agnes. In the book, Esmeralda is kidnapped at birth and in her place they put no one other than Quasimodo. So they aren't his birth parents. But IDK, Disney could have had something else in mind.
@PrimroseBlack His description in the book gave him the same skin and hair, but it was also a way of him appearing more menacing during that period. In most European countries at the time, red hair and green eyes was considered to be a sign of the devil.
@PrimroseBlack Pigment mutation? Its not that much of a stretch. also, he conceivably never left the tower. and he could have totally been a love child. I don't believe the man at the begining was explicitly stated to be his father.. I could be wrong though. I'm sick. XD
The gargoyles are annoying to adults but they do serve the purpose of comic releif in an other wise very adult film I don't like them and hate their song but they do have an undeniable purpose.
Why would you go through the trouble to take out the parts with the gargoyles? They are an essential part to Quasimodo's character. Being alone up in the bell tower his whole life, he made up friends to keep himself company. yeah, they're a little silly and ridiculous, but without them it wouldn't quite be a Disney movie. It would just be another dark telling of the Hunchback story.
If you want to give this film the credit it deserves go to IMBD.com and give it 10 out of 10! It is brilliant if we all vote it will gain much more notice.
But I can see what you are doinging it is true that the gargolyes could have been a bit more subdued but this is definitley disney's greatest film and often over looked. gargoyles or not! this is brilliant
You just ruined it! The gargoleys are projections of Quasi moto's subconsious. and if you notice they are the three freudain parts of the brian. the pig like one is qausi's id. the british one is his ego, and the gramdma is his super ego. they are brilliantly woven into the film to be his brain they arn't supposed to be real. Also this compliments the other freudain themes of love vs lust. If you look at this through a literary analyasis, the gargoles are esential.
i see where you're coming from but i also feel that since the movie has so many dark themes in it, the gargoyles add a lightheartedness to it. in fact without them i probably wouldn't be so willing to let kids watch it. there always needs to be a balance of tragedy and comedy in these types of films. i personally always loved the gargoyles. they're pretty funny. if you want total darkness just watch the older one with real people. no talking, singing gargoyles there ;)
I'm 13 and the first time i saw this movie was a couple months ago, and it scared me a lot. I mean through out the whole movie I was thinking "How can this be a Disney movie??????" but i will also say it is one of the best disney movies made.
I thought the gargoyles were there for comic relief, any person can only take so much tension, the gargoyles were their to break the tension and add comic relief to an otherwise really dramatic and tension filled scene. Random comedy- it is a kids movie after all. I personally loved all the gargoyle scenes since they brought the comedic aspect to the movie.
The intro song freaks me out-in a good way. it is AMAZING. so demonic and gothic. its even better (if possible) when u r in the mood for demonic mood... And how did the guy hit that note at the very end??? i have a feeeling something was yanked...
they actually mention in the book that quasimodo imagines he's having conversations with the statues in the church. he imagines them when he's lonely. he thinks of the saint statues as his beloved friends and the gargoyle statues, which he compares his own appearance to, as his guardians or protectors. but he's never seen actually interacting with the statues....
The reason behind having the gargoyles is Disney was meant as entertainment for children and some adult audiences I believe that the gargoyles were put there to break the tension for the children who watched this movie. and besides whats a Disney movie without things talking that aren't supposed to?
i forgot how dark this opening is........why isnt disney like this with more serious movies like this.......im 18 and this ending is more dark then most movies i watch
I think this would have been Disneys best film if it weren't for the humor and especially the gargoyles. It was to much sarcastic humor for a serious tone that the film had. Walt Disney himself favorised Bambi because it was the most serious of his film. This would have been among the best movies, better than Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, but the forced sarcastic humor made the film loose its credibility.
I agree with you in the fact the gargoyles were forced humor, and I'm pleased you made a version with out them, but I can't help but explain why they were there. It's Disney, they make childrens shows, without the gargoyles it would be an extremly serious movie, almost scary with the fires and the death of his mother, they had to add an element of humor no matter how forced. Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying they were needed and what your doing is wrong, in fact i like it better this way.
@horsesaremylife31899 It's a senior official of a diocese who is the bishop's representative in supervising parish priests and churches. You know making sure they are trained in doing the daily mass...blah blah blah.

I have to really agree about the Gargoyles. I hated them as a kid for ruining the movie!
I hate most "comedic relief" side-kick characters nowadays. More annoying than funny!

it says in the title "without gargoyles... but, i see them anyway? i don't get it?

I think this would have been Disneys best film if it weren't for the humor and especially the gargoyles. It was to much sarcastic humor for a serious tone that the film had. Walt Disney himself favorised Bambi because it was the most serious of his film. This would have been among the best movies, better than Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, but the forced sarcastic humor made the film loose its credibility.
You did the right thing, Dextermorri.

@theFatticat What is that ? An Archdeacon I have never heard of it or I have heard it and just not known what is meant.
horsesaremylife31899 9 months ago
@horsesaremylife31899 It's a senior official of a diocese who is the bishop's representative in supervising parish priests and churches. You know making sure they are trained in doing the daily mass...blah blah blah.

That was awesome! Those gargoyles really ruined a lot of the dramatic moments, ESPECIALLY the meaningful lyrics in "Heaven's Light".
