oil vapor canister? isnt that emissions crap? take it off. mine doesnt even have it. stock exhaust too? jeez. haha .thanks for the video. maybe ill do that soon too. but i might not even need it...
hi i have an issue with my bike when i am traveling in third gear an only third gear. what its doing is it is making a rattling noise like a loose chain can anybody help figure out what is wrong thanks
Like said, its the pre 2003 models that have the poor tensioners. You will know as the newer one is brown. The early (crap) tensionser were bare aluminium. I don't know anyone who's brown tensioner has failed. It's the same design thats only hundreds of thousands of bikes.
I can see a problem with the MCCT. Some people may fit and forget. When normal stretch and wear takes place, if you dont adjust it.. you will have a flappy chain and caus damage.
i just bought an 05 drz400sm,,,,, and it came with no manual and the previous owner was about 5'6,,155 pounds,,, i am 6'2 ,,190 pounds,,, how do i raise the seat height in the rear,,, do i just simply adjust the spring by twisting the retainers,,,ar is ther more to it?? i don't want to throw the spring rate all out of whack,, but let me know please,, this may be a "noob" question ,, but i am a noob.. great videos btw,,, very informative.
great video! working on an '01 the bolts want to fight back. A little Blaster Spray comes in handy. I took the black bottle out because a regular allen wrench wouldnt break the bolts. Had to use an allen socket on a rachet. Black tank had to come out for this and it was nice having room to work. thanks for making the upgrade easier.
GREAT VID!!! I was able to do mine without even touching the exhaust and without completely removing the oil vapor cannister. I just unbolted it and pushed it out of the way.
suzuki corrected this problem in later years. when you purchase a new tensioner from suzuki you get the updated part which is basically a ltz400 tensioner thats been modified for about 65 bucks, but it works well.
single cylinders dont last long..Too much power on one piston..My friends got crf 450, Husqvarna 610, so on, they all either did the engine rebuild or are planing on it..Matter of the fact is and you owners should know best, every time you ride theres a new or different noise coming out of the engine..Great bikes, just not to maintain.
I have a question please help me out!. I have a drz400s 2003 with 2k miles on it. I just bought the bike and it runs great, totaly stock. If i put my head close to the motor when its running i can hear a slight ticking noise. (the same noise you can hear on this video at the end). Is this normal? Or should you not hear that ticking noise at all? Thank you so much to whom ever answers my question!
It it is the same noise you here in mine there is no problem, that was 200 miles ago and I have done nothing but change the oil. These DRz 400 motors are noisy they always sound like something is wrong. I would go to thumpertalk web site and under the Suzuki section you will find the DRZ400 area and do some research if you think you have a real problem.
The Manual one puts to much pressure on the cam chain and it stretches. The manual one is not spring loaded and does not apply a constant pressure so it does not stretch you chain.
By the way, do you know if there is a semi-automatic tensioner? Because i think mine is of a such kind (Intruder GN 125cc)... I don't know how to adjust it, the owner's manual doesn't explain in detail. But it's written that i should put the engine in the TDC, release a nut and a screw, and just tight them again. (the problem is that i don't know how to put the engine in the TDC).
^^^^ He means the automatic one puts to much pressure on the cam chain and it stretches. The manual one is not spring loaded and does not apply a constant pressure so it does not stretch you chain.
very good , but what about setting to tdc before hand , to stop the cams flicking over , its happened to me on other bikes , and all so remove plug and rotate engine by crank to make proper sure ....4 valves on my vtr with bits £250 dont learn the hard way

After its installed, when should i check it and adjust it again?? Ive been on 1 or 2 short rides after i put in my mcct
trailbill93 3 months ago
What about putting the engine to TDC before the install?
m0tyrider 6 months ago
@m0tyrider No need to. Just get some tension on the adjuster before starting it.

Doing the fitment this way isnt there a chance the camchain could jump a tooth???

Good job with the how to, but you don't need to remove the exhaust. Just unbolt the black oil vapor box and push it backwards.

you only need the mcct if you have drz 400 made before 2003. 2003 and later dont have all of the reported issues.
nitrojoe9 2 years ago
@nitrojoe9 They are still prone to failure though. 2003+ is updated and better, but are still known to fail pre-maturally.

I didn't hear any difference in sound when you were backing it out and threading it back in.
is it easier to hear in person?

highly tuned singles need rebuilding. Untuned they are almost bulletproof.

what are the advantages of using a manual tensioner instead of an automatic one?
lucasgaroto 3 years ago
The Manual one puts to much pressure on the cam chain and it stretches. The manual one is not spring loaded and does not apply a constant pressure so it does not stretch you chain.

i mean, Suzuki GN 125cc

There are some automatic tensioners with a rough adjuster on them (sort of a combination auto-manual)
KanzlerM 2 years ago
Look up video of "Cam Chain Tension Adjuster LTZ 400" to see the manual adjusted automatic tensioner

Whats exactky the black box for? I dont have it on my bike :S
pYura 3 years ago
It is part of the engine breathing system where oil can settle and go back into the engine. Not sure the propper name for it.

This has not been an issue on the DRZ400, it is a single cylinder DOHC.
