I think all schools should have internet in the school, not at home so much...public libraries also have internet for free use. Internet at home though I'm iffy on. I think it's expensive for he shit internet providers we pay for ( disconnects, shitty customer service ). If we had a more reliable and cheaper network I think this could work...but I don't really trust a grade school kid to not click something on 4chan and crying themselves to sleep. I do think older kids are fine though, IT ed.
The internet should be part of public school funding, how some of you people think that these kids can be educated to a fair standard in the digital age- the 21st century without access to the internet, and the use of online resources pretty much showcases your ignorance. It might have worked ten (just barely) or even twenty years ago, but education for young people, particularly poor young kids requires them developing skills that are relevant to the times they shall be expected to live in.

I'm not a conservative but this is going too far. It's not the federal government's job to give everyone free internet access. Most of these kids' families probably have cable tv which could be cut out to pay for internet access, or at least waste money somehow like on cigarettes/alcohol.
If these kids learn that the government is supposed to provide luxuries to them, they will never grow up and learn to provide for themselves and grow into to a position where they can actually help others.
While, I have no problem giving free access to the internet. Americans must remember that this idea would only increase taxes, which many aren't willing to do. it also never hurts when you have a good teacher. fortunately i was in a private school until 8th grade. i passed everyone in public school because frankly the teachers didnt give a crap about the kids.
all the kids had calculators the teachers always thought i was cheating because i could do all the work in my head in math or that i knew more about history then the rest of the class.

Then i moved to Australia and went to a private school and finished there. When it came to history and geography I still knew more than many others here though strangely enough. Many libraries do have internet access (thanks to Bill Gates) but across the country many are limited hours and the ratio of computers to students is still low.
Not having access to the same technology as their counterparts in more affluent parts of the school system immediately puts these children at a further disadvantage.

The point isn't the content or what they learn, it's how. You go could to the library and spend hours doing research that another student who has PC and internet access can do in a few minutes. Now, which student is going to have the advantage?
Some kids will go to sites that they shouldn't be on, but many adults do that now when they should be working. There's software to keep them from particular sites.

I'm saying that when i was in primary school, we didn't use the internet at all. We used computers to type and that's it. I'm now a media student, so I'm not exactly computer illiterate.
If you type a key word into google, you have to first of all sift through all the false information. Not every website provides the correct research. Explain to an 8 year old what wikipedia is.
And I'm sure there are bigger problems in the world than some primary school students not having access to the internet at home. I'm not one to say this often, but the old fashion way is better in this case if you ask me.
Sure, there are larger problems but whether minute or major, it's still a problem and leads to a larger one, such as the failure of many students to get an education that ultimately affects society as a whole further down the line. It's a matter of it being relative to the larger one.
Sure, in some instances, the old methods are best and a balance should be found, but our lack of having technology available to all students is costing us all in the long run.
I wouldn't recommend anyone using Wikipedia for true research anyway and just as you need to learn the proper way to do 'traditional' research, children need to be shown the proper way to do so using the internet. That's a part of the teaching process and you'd have to do so if you had a PC or not.

Many people i know that have p/c's are so outdated they just don't want to work. So they just get rid of them. Many refuse to to upgrade even 6 months to a years. Some are still useing Windows 98 on dailup.
Many that have got rid of them either got bored od surfing. But many people I have known online since just 200 have dropped offline. Some just don't think it's worth paying for. They might get back on if it's free. But I don't won't to have to help pay for them being online.
Not everyone lives in a town or city or within proximity of a library or other public facility that carries internet access. I'll present this common scenario: Parents both work. Have school age children. Live 20 miles from nearest access point. Children have homework to do, dinner to eat. Terminals at libraries and schools are limited. How do you provide access to the tools needed for your children to succeed?

But my grandkids are older. They moved from p/c to console. Their schools give them a laptop to use but only connects when they are at scholl. And very limited to where on the net they can go. Google is locked out as well as many other search sites.
They don't have to connect online to do their home work. It's all on the laptop,already.

I look at it differently. Network TV is free for all, via our taxes, and is useless as any sort of tool (actually, I don't have a tv anymore - swapped my cable bill for DSL). President Obama promised "fast, affordable" Internet. The stuff you get over satellite is woefully slow, and not all that affordable. Affordable to me is $25/mo or less. And dial-up? forget it. I can't sit still that long, and my banking sessions don't work properly. I have to use the Internet at work.
jim, internet access via satellite or any other method of delivery is not available nationwide. nor does everyone live within proximity to public places that offer access. increasing satellite capability or any capablility to allow everyone access is necessary in this day......not only for schoolkids, collegiates, but also for the elderly and others who otherwise have limited means to information and communication as well as social networking.
i live in rural virginia and work online. we paid over $400 to install a satellite hook up and over $80 a month for 300mb TOTAL bandwidth a day. this is not a viable, realistic chioce for rural people. we pay for it because we have to make a living online. most people in our area can not afford these prices for set up and monthly fees.
Internet access is close to $50 where I live and I live in a rural area with varied incomes. The computer has become an essential tool of democracy and self-suffiency. If every home were "wired" everyone can have opportunity to make their own ways of life. This is not really about governement dependency at all. It is about what is important for us to advance as a society.
Those who oppose Internet for Everyone do not understand living on the other side of the railroad tracks, where children are hampered in their education by not having access. People in rural areas are also denied. Therefore this is a human rights issue. Government provision will keep Big Media from ownership of cyberspace, which would limit access to those who can afford to pay for it . Other people who would be denied access are low-income seniors and disabled persons.
$10 a month, if you can't afford that, you probably shouldn't be wasting time on the internet. Or are we talking about buying everyone a complete computer system as well?
(1) There is no internet access in miles of rural areas. In this case, $10/month is irrelevant.
(2) You do not realize the value of $10 among members of the lower class, but regardless, the current $10 fee will rise if Big Media conglomerates own broadband access.

I'm not a conservative but this is going too far. It's not the federal government's job to give everyone free internet access. Most of these kids' families probably have cable tv which could be cut out to pay for internet access, or at least waste money somehow like on cigarettes/alcohol.
If these kids learn that the government is supposed to provide luxuries to them, they will never grow up and learn to provide for themselves and grow into to a position where they can actually help others.

it also never hurts when you have a good teacher. fortunately i was in a private school until 8th grade. i passed everyone in public school because frankly the teachers didnt give a crap about the kids.
all the kids had calculators the teachers always thought i was cheating because i could do all the work in my head in math or that i knew more about history then the rest of the class.

it was the other way around for me, i was in a public school in Germany till 8th grade. Germany has a screwed up school system. Then i moved to Australia and went to a private school and finished there. When it came to history and geography I still knew more than many others here though strangely enough. My Ex thought a continent is a "floating island" until i told her otherwise...... dodged a bullet there hey haha

Many libraries do have internet access (thanks to Bill Gates) but across the country many are limited hours and the ratio of computers to students is still low.
Not having access to the same technology as their counterparts in more affluent parts of the school system immediately puts these children at a further disadvantage.

The point isn't the content or what they learn, it's how. You go could to the library and spend hours doing research that another student who has PC and internet access can do in a few minutes. Now, which student is going to have the advantage?
Some kids will go to sites that they shouldn't be on, but many adults do that now when they should be working. There's software to keep them from particular sites.
What would be the benefit of a ploy or plot by teachers/producers?

I'm saying that when i was in primary school, we didn't use the internet at all. We used computers to type and that's it. I'm now a media student, so I'm not exactly computer illiterate.
If you type a key word into google, you have to first of all sift through all the false information. Not every website provides the correct research. Explain to an 8 year old what wikipedia is.

Sure, there are larger problems but whether minute or major, it's still a problem and leads to a larger one, such as the failure of many students to get an education that ultimately affects society as a whole further down the line. It's a matter of it being relative to the larger one.
Sure, in some instances, the old methods are best and a balance should be found, but our lack of having technology available to all students is costing us all in the long run.

I wouldn't recommend anyone using Wikipedia for true research anyway and just as you need to learn the proper way to do 'traditional' research, children need to be shown the proper way to do so using the internet. That's a part of the teaching process and you'd have to do so if you had a PC or not.

I'm sorry but access to the internet is access to not only the entire base of human knowledge but also exposure to vastly different points of view which can open a person's mind to alternative possibilities. If poor children have internet access their entire lives then it will be better for us all as they will grow up to be far more open minded as well as cultured and capable. It is worth the minor public expense. Take the money out of less deserving projects like Medicare.

I am a parent at that school. We have one of the highest test scores in DC as well as US. Before you open your mouth, check us out. Most of them are not on "welfare" as you would like to put it. Many people i know that have p/c's are so outdated they just don't want to work. So they just get rid of them. Many refuse to to upgrade even 6 months to a years. Some are still useing Windows 98 on dailup.
Many that have got rid of them either got bored od surfing. But many people I have known online since just 200 have dropped offline. Some just don't think it's worth paying for. They might get back on if it's free. But I don't won't to have to help pay for them being online.

Not everyone lives in a town or city or within proximity of a library or other public facility that carries internet access. I'll present this common scenario: Parents both work. Have school age children. Live 20 miles from nearest access point. Children have homework to do, dinner to eat. Terminals at libraries and schools are limited. How do you provide access to the tools needed for your children to succeed?

And as a coach for a T-ball tem, they won't evn lookup anything to do with baseball, unless it's some kind of game they can play.
But my grandkids are older. They moved from p/c to console. Their schools give them a laptop to use but only connects when they are at scholl. And very limited to where on the net they can go. Google is locked out as well as many other search sites.
They don't have to connect online to do their home work. It's all on the laptop,already.

Personally, my take on the whole subject is that I do agree w/ access being available nationwide, but not just from the aspect of schooling - I'd like the message here to not be so aimed at pity for children, but a wider scope inclusive of many things.

I look at it differently. Network TV is free for all, via our taxes, and is useless as any sort of tool (actually, I don't have a tv anymore - swapped my cable bill for DSL). The internet on the other hand opens a world for data/info seeking, social networking, research, and day-to-day functions. We wouldn't be having these types of critical discussions, for example, without it. Totally, the video is playing the pity card - agreed. They could have used my 80-yr.old mother instead...

But like at work. There are 32 men on first shift. of those only 7 have p/c's. of the 7, only 5 use them(family p/c's). Of the 5, 3 of us are online. of the 5 only 3 of use even know what OS in on our p/c's.

President Obama promised "fast, affordable" Internet. The stuff you get over satellite is woefully slow, and not all that affordable. Affordable to me is $25/mo or less. And dial-up? forget it. I can't sit still that long, and my banking sessions don't work properly. I have to use the Internet at work.

jim, internet access via satellite or any other method of delivery is not available nationwide. nor does everyone live within proximity to public places that offer access. increasing satellite capability or any capablility to allow everyone access is necessary in this day......not only for schoolkids, collegiates, but also for the elderly and others who otherwise have limited means to information and communication as well as social networking.

i live in rural virginia and work online. we paid over $400 to install a satellite hook up and over $80 a month for 300mb TOTAL bandwidth a day. this is not a viable, realistic chioce for rural people. we pay for it because we have to make a living online. most people in our area can not afford these prices for set up and monthly fees.

Internet access is close to $50 where I live and I live in a rural area with varied incomes. The computer has become an essential tool of democracy and self-suffiency. If every home were "wired" everyone can have opportunity to make their own ways of life. This is not really about governement dependency at all. It is about what is important for us to advance as a society.

Those who oppose Internet for Everyone do not understand living on the other side of the railroad tracks, where children are hampered in their education by not having access. People in rural areas are also denied. Therefore this is a human rights issue. Government provision will keep Big Media from ownership of cyberspace, which would limit access to those who can afford to pay for it . Other people who would be denied access are low-income seniors and disabled persons.

$10 a month, if you can't afford that, you probably shouldn't be wasting time on the internet. Or are we talking about buying everyone a complete computer system as well?

(1) There is no internet access in miles of rural areas. In this case, $10/month is irrelevant.
(2) You do not realize the value of $10 among members of the lower class, but regardless, the current $10 fee will rise if Big Media conglomerates own broadband access.
