What an astouding acoustic pared down version of my favourite Sparks song. I've never seen this. Ron's accompaniment and persona is great and Russell's voice is fantastic. That incredible vocal ending matches the original IMHO. I could listen to all their songs in this acoustic format.
I love how in the later songs you might think Russell's voice has changed and he can't sing how he used to (because the vocals are so different) but in reality he can still sing the older stuff almost the same as the day he recorded it. What's also incredible is that even without the rest of the band, the piano/keyboard that Ron wrote is strong enough to carry the vocals and make the song sound complete. Two truly talented people. Nothing wrong with their humour either! :)
I heard Freddy Mercury in concert and he never sounded this good and especially uncut, he never would have come close to Russel! Don't get me wrong Freddy was amazing but he was more a studio singer when it came to the truly high falsetto's, with the help of his band mates! I have always loved sparks and now I have an even greater respect for them! What a great post Thanks!
@Bodebodango This is an amazing performance but can you really this its as vocally demanding as most queen songs? I really dont think so, I think freddy mercury is much better tbh
@Goldin69 Freddy and the band was over dubs and lots of tracks! Live Freddy was never up to snuff in comparison to his studio work! And you have to remember his drummer and guitarist were very much a part of the falsetto and hi pitched singing! I mean you really want pure vocalist go with Steve Perry or even George Michael! Freddy didn't really have the range people think he had! Russel whom I knew back in the day could really belt it out and his live singing was as good as his recorded singing!
@Bodebodango Now just to show you how much I do like Freddy and his mates watch him live during Live Aid! Its on here and its amazing! And the way he stirs up the crowd during radio Ga Ga, and Hammer too fall! But Freddy could never replicate his studio work like Russel can and still does! As a matter of fact when freddy died their was talk of Russel, and George Michael both taking his place! I saw Queen a couple of years ago and I felt like i was watching a tribute band to be quite honest!
@Bodebodango You knew him back in the day, n who are you? lol. N yer I agree steve perry was an amzing vocalist but still dont think russell is all your making him out to be, and you dont give freddy enough credit, I may not have seen him live myself but live videos like this one show how they can sing n after looking at some I think freddy could belt it out, just coz he didnt go as high pitch doesnt make him worse :/
@Goldin69 I dated his bass players daughter Less Boheim and so I got to go to all the concerts when I was a young pup! I just think Russel could easily handle Freddy's material, although Freddy has a certain sound that can never be replicated! For example George Michael sang in the same pitch as Freddy in the tribute concert and probably sounded better than Freddy ever would sound live singing that song! But was it Freddy and the sound of his voice No Way!
@johlufc Their is no comparison! Russel still has his range, and falsetto. And Freddy started losing his way before he died! They were way better in studio and thats a fact!
Thumbs up if you lived in Clapham Junction in 1973

So many rock and pop stars fall totally flat when played acoustically in a pared down version.
This sounds great, which shows what a solid piece of songcraft this is.
