  • @cliffythehippie

In a general sense, it's an indictment of mindless consumerism and the marketing of crap you don't need.

More specifically, it's about the ill-effects of the marketing credo that more choice is good for the consumer. The reality is, the more choices you have, the greater likelihood of "decision paralysis" and/or the inevitable disappointment with what you do end up choosing because you wonder if maybe one of the other 59 choices would have been the better choice.

  • Ya know, the Roman look really works for Jerry. I like that, in the second scene with the Romans and the dog, Jerry is still eating his donut.

  • I think this is my new favorite band.

  • wait whatto they mean by "freedom from choice, is what you whant"

freedom FROM choice. if you figure it out the plz respond

  • @cliffythehippie

The song itself gives a clue to what this means in the lines:

"Then if you got it, you don't want it -

Seems to be the rule of thumb"

Meaning that it's human nature to want to be rid of the burdon and the responsibility of having to make choices that always comes with having freedom of choice. You may have freedom of choice, but knowing what are the RIGHT choices to make, that is a burden every human being must face.

  • @eklektro68 wwwwaaaaaaaawwwwww thnx

  • @eklektro68 Thank You Grasshopper :D

  • I meant "burden".

  • @cliffythehippie Devo understood that the American Citizen doesn't really want freedom OF choice but freedom FROM choice.Less thinking and fall right in line, believeing in whatever crap the Politicians feed us(which is all BS)man.Take care ...

  • that dog is pretty hot

  • EXELENTE TEMA ME LLEVA A LA MEJOR EPOCA DE MI VIDA: MI NIÑEZ.

si alguien sabe quien canta la cancion escabullendote, o el titulo en ingles que la suelte en la red

  • @dirtyoldman1100 Seems this song is about lazy ppl like you, and it goes straight over your head like a 747. Essentially all your saying is ignore the lyrical content and just enjoy the beat like I do when Im drunk and stoned, attempting to limit the listeners choice to the very limited scope of your own being, thats regressive thinking and is the irony of your post. Fortunately the world is a big place and some people will actually listen to it sober and understand why it was written

  • @TwoDogsX2 When you do listen to it sober, it is undoubtedly not in my musical tastes, as far the lyrics go however. BRILLIANT!

  • @TwoDogsX2 you just made me realize maybe thats what the whole d evo lution was about wow man i dont got beerz and thatz deeeeeeep!! i think they are tellin us to be lazy and de evolutionize ourselves

  • I like this version better than perfect circle

  • dude!!!! well said!!

  • These mutherfucking videos!!

  • Yeah, it's even better when your assigned to aa foreign office and have to watch some retarded local ad.

  • one of the most under-rated albums by one of the most under-rated bands ever.

  • I like the croma effects.

  • the whole song's good, but i especially like the beat from 0:15-0:38 :D sounds so badass! XD

  • My favorite doughnut is the one that leaves the greasy skid-mark... Oooooooooh yeah!

  • ME HACE RECORDAR A MI PRIMARIA ESPECIALMENTE A MI 5 ª DE PRIMARIA CUANDO HABIA AQUEL PROGRAMA DISCO CLUB CON GERARDO MANUEL QUE TIEMPOS AQUELLOS

  • @MrKatana1100sz - actually you are not forced to watch the ad before the video. You can purchase or download this song/video from other sources. There are lots of options, but you choose the one that requires that you watch an ad because it is easier than choosing another option - and then complain about it. Now THAT's irony!

  • @ignorgasm Just use adblock.

  • Love those Los Angeles Rams headphones at 1:44. I remember seeing a Dallas Cowboys headphones similar to that; and they were about $100. BIG money for 1980, especially to a kid.

  • CUANTO TIEMPO HE TARDADO EN ENCONTRAR ESTA CANCION HE BUSCADO DE PURA CASUALIDAD EL DIA DE HOY Y LO ENCONTRE DIOS BENDIA ALA PERSONA QUE COLGO ESTE VIDEO

  • Ahahaha oh, the Yo Gabba Gabba parody of this music video in Plex's promo for the YGG Vans? Perfect.

  • @MrKatana1100sz Adblock plus. Really. It's 2011 and you still see ads? Amateur.

  • Freedom from choice is what you want.

  • still a cool video especially the last 30 seconds

  • Eff this b.s. republican lying ad.

    ~

  • At 2:40 Is that Michael Bay??

  • LOL MrKatana1100sz! Skateboarding sure has changed.

  • upland pipeline!!! the OG combie bowl

  • upland pipeline!!!

  • 12 people need to live somewhere where they have no freedom of choice.

  • Are you f*cking sh*tting me?! Dat's da Z-Boyz at the beginning -- Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva. That's like cool on top of epic!

  • @swetergrl91 yeah i noticed also good times back then.

  • Kick ass song from the old days.

  • in order to have freedom of choice we must use our freedom of choice!!!!

  • Nice channel air at 1:30 mark

  • 3:00 AUTHENTIC PUNK ROCK CHICK why cant chix dress like this everywhere everyday

  • Use your Freedom of Choice... that's right, the all new Freedom of Choice data plan, only available at your local Apple Store.

  • Freedom of Choice is what you got, freedom from choice is what you want....

  • zomg

  • Deep meaning under a fun beat.

  • its a matter of freedom of choice though, did we sweat out bullets underneath pressure? no?!?! We only sat here and b*tch because we had nothing to do, well Soilder its time for you to grip the guns pistol and head to war

  • this whole song is awesome, but i especially like the beginning (0:16-0.38) sick beat/tune!

  • @Germania1971 I'm with ya in that fight, this country has been over run by trendy lefty hipsters that only appreciate freedom of choice & speech when and only when its in there favor,to hell with everyone else is there motto.

  • @hatewog Aww, dad!

  • @hatewog I wish I could see what you were replying to but the comment has been removed.

Something I've been saying for a long time though. Freedom applies to everybody or nobody, none of the self-righteous pricks who scream for their freedom to act and speak as they see fit, then pitch a fit when people who they don't agree with wants the same will likely ever understand that though.

  • @jackieeffinbrown Refined and well-mannered.

    Consider yourself well-accomplished.

  • MY favorite song by Devo and I LOVE this video!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love watching old school videos.

  • @tandlaguilera420 I LOVE this video and I agree with you!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE the old videos in the '60's and beginning '90's better than any of the ones today!!!!!!!!!!

  • What is up with the christian crap advertisements before the Devo video?

  • @MrKatana1100sz

The VERY same thought went through my head.

  • How should i kill people? Gun or grenade?

  • i love devo who is with me!!!!!

  • Freedom from choice is what we got.

  • thankyou JJJ for playing this true classic at easter :)

truly still one of the most underrated bands of all time and will always be one of my favourites m49:)

  • @mfactor88 Throw in Kings X and Living Colour and you have a trifecta of unknown musical awesomeness.

  • Now they're overweight, nerdy old guys. And they're still a hundred times cooler than any of us could ever hope to be...

  • Honey Buches of Oats.......there is POISON in thirty boxes, somewhere in the nation. Thanks for fucking up the video with your ad, asshole motherfuckers. Youtube SUXKs now that google greed greed greed motehrfuckx own it.

  • Vevo-lution sucks

  • Hate the commercial! I want to shoot that progressive supermarket bitch!

  • How come Devo is not on Vevo?

  • It's a beautiful thing, to wake up in the morning and realize the freedom of choice is what you've got.

  • @stutwostep is it

  • @friginhell123 Only if freedom from choice is what you want ; )

  • I dig this.

  • Isn't it amazing to see an old Devo video, and realize.. They did it right. Everything after was cheesy, even to this day.

  • i saw jesus in my dream

    he touched my no-no spot

  • sweet Jesus, why am I so cool with THIS as my resume?.... I rock, simply for choosing and exercising my freedom of choice... muthas..

  • sweet Jesus, why am I so cool with THIS as my resume?.... I rock, simply for choosing and exercising my freedom of choice... muthas..

  • The APC version of this song is a whole lot less creepy.

  • Freedom of choice is what you got

Freedom from choice is what you want.

Isn't that what the proponents of Obamacare were saying to defend their expropriation of the health care system?

  • @HoustonCougarRed Christ, don't you guys ever give it a rest?

  • @HoustonCougarRed actually your appraisal is backwards. One NOW has choice, whereas before he did not.

  • this song IS about abortion, right?

  • @thehattaman Not at all. It's not about the choice of ANY one thing. The song is simply about the fallacy of man's collective regression. Which everyone knows that the satire of this subject is what DEVO is all about. The message of the song is this: People claim they want the freedom to make their own choices on the outside, but on the inside, all they really want is to be led around to believe what everyone else and their leaders do, simply because it's easier and they don't have to think.

  • @NightStarX99 AUTHOR AUTHOR !! I COULDN'T HAVE PUT IT BETTER MYSELF!

    NightStar, here is a TRUE historical statement to defend your point, and why it IS tragic that so many people senselessly listen to leaders instead on using their own intelligence;

"How fortunate for leaders that the people they lead don't think, and how fortunate for governments that the people they govern don't think!" ~ Adolph Hitler

Just Google this. Hitler DID say this!

  • @HeartBDoctor That's because Hitler was brilliant. He was a massive douchehole, but he was a smart douchehole.

    Also, it's Adolf. Not Adolph.

  • @dancinginfernal Your argument being?

  • @HeartBDoctor My argument being I didn't read the whole thing before replying and now I look the fool.

Bacon! Hast thou heard of the ferret king? Amoebic life-forms! I'll just leave now, apologies.

  • @NightStarX99 PRAZE BOB

  • @NightStarX99 "The Fear of freedom" by Eric Frohm

  • @NightStarX99

Sounds like a fucking ant colony to me pal

  • @NightStarX99 It's really about the "false" choices that we are presented with in life. Especially the "choice" we have now with commercialization and the selling of the human mind. For instance, you have freedom to choose between Lowes and Home Depot. The feeling of freedom created by choosing a product, rather than making adult choices that affect yourselves and others.

  • @Zenbuck2 Yes, that also factors into the general message as well. Being manipulated to a decision is easier than making a difficult one of one's own accord.

  • @Zenbuck2 Yes, that also factors into the general message as well. Being manipulated to a decision is easier than making a difficult one of one's own accord.

  • @NightStarX99 what... did you wrote the song? how do you know it's not about the decition of eating a hot dog or a burger

  • @brendn1 Because I know what Devo have said about the song on several occasions, including retrospectives and interviews. That and they've always made all of their messages and believes very clear, every time they have ever talked about themselves. That, and even if I didn't, the lyrics aren't exactly difficult to figure out anyway.

  • Freedom of choice, is what you got

Freedom from choice, is what you want.

As accurate as it is chilling.

  • I know this song would be New Wave ,but this song is straight Power Pop, it might be one of there best songs, way better than Whip It

  • The advertisement for the NY State government teacher's union was just a bit crappy. It's exactly opposite of what I want to see before this video.

Powerful individualist song...oh...first let's watch a collectivist identity politics commercial for a monopoly government service. Yay...freedom of choice, eh?

  • @BlackSheepReport

....screw the public school system, and the united states'(and the rest of the western world's) 99% literacy rate...I think poor people should be forced to pay out of pocket for as many public services as possible, that way they face as many stumbling blocks as possible so they'll never have what I have.

I'm assuming you were either rich enough to go to a private school growing up or you're just plain silly.

  • @leeharveyosmosis I went to public school. I am honest enough to know private school out performs it. And it does so spending much less money. It also doesn;t force anyone to pay for it. The public school system is monopoly enforced by government. My comment was a statement on how ironic it is that the advertisement for freedom of choice was something I am forced to pay for...no choice. Stop with the class warfare.

  • @BlackSheepReport If you think DEVO buys into an indvidualist/collectivist false dichotomy, I think you are mistaken.

  • @nimbusco If you think I care what you think, or DEVO thinks, you are mistaken. Sorry your panties are in a bunch. Who am I to have an opinion differing from yours? The nerve.

  • I are cunfuzzled

  • lol when i saw the title i was thinking..did APC really do a devo cover?

  • @TheAmazeingAnarchist they absolutely did and made it amazing. you should hear how they changed annihilation from utter garbage to something really good.

  • @Jfuchs116 annihilation was a cover too?!?!

  • @TheAmazeingAnarchist Oh yeah! Crucifix- Annihilation. to make it easier. All of the songs off of eMOTIVe are covers except for Passive and Counting bodies like sheep. you have to listen to the original! only maynerd could take that raw sound and make it beautiful. you'll understand once you listen to it

  • @NickySalz..Waaaayyyyy before Incubus. just sayin...

  • OK, who are the skaters in the beginning??

    Peralta, Hosoi, Alva, Olson?......

  • @trotp3 Duane Peters, Tony Alva, Steve Olson, Steve Alba, Stacy Peralta, David Andrecht, Eddie Elguera

  • @afotiad Thanks...that accounts for 7 ( I got Elguera mixed up with Hosoi)

  • @afotiad Thanks...that accounts for 7 Brad Bowman? ( I got Elguera mixed up with Hosoi)

  • Chorus of this song (@ 1 min mark) = Same chord progression as chorus of Megalomaniac by Incubus. just sayin.

  • This message is so true. Too bad most of the word didn't follow this message and are now mindless robots that follow every trend the corprations tell them, think what government and the media tells them. A real shame that most people are sheep. But awesome song. Thanks devo.

  • best DEVO song!!!! Greets from Lima, Perú.

  • The video and the song.....equally brilliant.

  • Fucking genius. Also a totally rocking song.

  • Fucking genius.

  • OVED :o)

  • DEVO - the original Lectroids.

  • The "poem" alluded to is a fable by Aesop.

  • upside down triangle of chocolate donuts... sounds anti-illuminati.

  • @jeepndesert omg.... i hate the illuminati

  • Devo is the sh*%. This song plays great, even 30 years later.

  • ok, all you students of the classics - - "in ancient rome / there was a poem / about a dog / who found 2 bones" - - what's the title of the poem being alluded to? the author?

  • @wallofvideo hello there i would please like to know this my self please / because i relate to this from high scool . one of our prencipals / coach from south carolina summerville in the 80's made me register to vote. forced me to stay after school, a week later i pussed out . it was hard on me i lived ten miles away . if i told any one at home would have gave up sooner. i still hate him and the others like him. i was a long haired no good pot head and theif i did no drugs and wasnt a theif

  • @wallofvideo Romulus and Remus? Is this a trick question?

  • dis shit is very scary

  • didn't perfect circle remake this on emotive??

  • @marroxeli yes, emotive is nothing but cover songs....when the levee breaks is led zeppelin, i forgot who did gimme gimme, but all of them is by someone else.

  • @xxxslayerxxx666

"gimme gimme gimme" is a Black Flag song. Emotive is a good album!

  • this shit scares me

  • Revenge of the Nerds

  • Nerds are cool because they are nerds.

  • If you watch this video while stoned, you'll want a chocolate donut really badly.

    Only if your a Pig

  • @SDChargersForever If you're stoned you're going to want a chocolate donut with or with this video. YAY for San Diego!!!!!!!!

  • @619crispy I meant with or WITHOUT...Sorry.

  • This is an ode to totalitarianism... But I bet most people in the 80s didn't even notice that. That was the magic of DEVO, made people dance at the rhythm of scorn!

  • @antejutronic it is not an 'ode to' but a song against totalitarianism

  • @antejutronic devo is all about irony
