Can someone tell me how Snape can get away with helping Harry in the first movie? Quirell mentions how he (Voldemorte) was the one trying to kill Harry and Snape was helping him.

So wouldn't that mean that Voldemorte knew Snape helped Harry? This kind of goes against how Snape is a secret double agent.

Maybe I'm missing something deeper.

@glowyrm In HBP, when Snape was questioned by Bellatrix about his loyalties, he coolly replied that he was only pretending to work for Dumbledore, and that he was always on Voldemort's side. Snape's reasoning would've been that he was only 'saving' Harry for Voldemort himself, in order for the prophecy to be fulfilled. Snape was the one who conveyed (part of) the prophecy to Voldemort. At least, that's my understanding. Voldemort was also physically dependent on Quirrell at the time.

Actually, Alan Rickman did have an idea. He knew before everyone that Snape was in love with Harry's mother, because he had conversations with JK Rowling about his character and is one of the few Harry Potter actors that she spoke to prior to the completion of the book series about the future direction of the character.

Love how they played out the Qudditch scene in this film, and how Harry's broomstick stopped moving mere seconds after Snape stomped the flame, but also instantly after Quirrell was knocked over.  Someone new to Harry Potter wouldn't know which one was responsible.

I've always felt that Snape also see's Lily when he looks at Harry. However I believe he subconsciously chose to be reminded of James Potter instead because the memory of being bullied was nothing compared to his guilt in Lily's death. This causes him to be unconditionally mean to Harry at times.

Of course, Harry didn't leave a very good first-impression either! Having a headache while starring at Snape! How could he!

It's crazy how relevant the second scene is to Half Blood Prince... the draught of the living dead is what Harry makes the first day of potions class in HP6, a beozar is what he uses to save Ron's life, and Slughorn gives 5 points to Gryffindor for Harry's "pure cheek" when he presents him with a beozar as an antidote for a poison. I love how well Rowling planned out these books!
