@wooball7 I think you misunderstood me. I was saying that most doctors do NOT do it for the money. They are vastly underpaid, but the PERCEPTION is that doctors are money seeking egomanics. I wish people understood how much doctors (most) really do just want to help people. I think we are on the same page, my comment just came off wrong I guess. Again, best of luck with Med school Where you going?
Oh, and surgeons work so much because they are work-a-holics, not because the surgeries are so long. Most surgeries are like 45 minutes to an hour and a half, unless you get into CT surgery, vascular, plastics, etc. And again, I'm all in favor of doctors making money, my entire point is that they don't make enough given what they put into it. And going to make even less with Obamacare :). Read more closely next time! lol. Good luck with Med school to you and your brother!
@wooball7 My point was simply that people think doctors are these egotistical, money hungry people. And 90% of them are not. I love what I do, because I love helping people. But the misperception of doctors being materialistic drives me crazy (yes, some are). When patients make remarks like, "What would you know, you drive a porsche", only to inform them you drive a civic, and they call you a liar--that is frustrating. That's all I'm saying :).
@wooball7 lol. Ok, you and your brother are "becoming" doctors. I am a doctor. And I'm telling you that if your smart enough to be a doctor, you could make a lot more money doing something else. Doctors are not going to starve, but when you graduate with 200,000 in debt, and your making 200,000 a year (that's walking away with 100,000 after taxes, and closer to like 80,000 after malpractice insurance), you'll start to realize that it isn't worth it UNLESS you love what you do.
I think it is so sad that people think doctors go to school for money. Every doctor I know drives a car worth less than 20,000 and works a minimum of 60 hours a week (unless they are surgeons then more like 80) (and that is AFTER residency. So, invest 4 years in medical school, paying 60,000 per year, then work 4-6 years as a resident, working 80-120 hrs/wk making 40,000 a year (that's 7.70 per hour btw), then after that decade spend 1 more paying off your debt.
@MSArcilla, I agree 100% but remember, on a deserted Island, even a doctor cannot do much without the technological advances we have made and equipment we use today in our hospitals.
I love when people who want to become doctors say, "I wan to help people, thats why I want to be doctor" ...really?? because firefighters help people, police help people, lawyers help people, i can go on and on. So why do you really want to be a doctor? I myself am a pre-med student, and when people ask me that question I still do not have a good answer...but I know I would do it for free for the rest of my life. Even if I don't become a doctor, I can and will help in so many other ways...
Everyone cannot become a firefighter, police or lawyer because different personalities and interests would clash with those professions no matter how much a person desires to "help people." I find that interesting that you , as a "pre-med," question the authenticity of others but good luck on finding your reason. I respect all the other professions but I personally prefer saving a life by treating the illness rather than shooting one person for the sake of saving another like a cop could
agreed there are really much better opportunities for making money, but being a physician is rewarding in its own way that no other careers offer. =)!!
To which I reply as your "average finance agent"....at the end of the day, the money you make is meaningless. looking back in my years of experience, i can honestly say that finance people create nothing and improve nothing. we are a bunch of cube monkeys who push paper around, hoping to manipulate a spread for that 20% IRR.
Think about this: if you were stranded on a deserted island, how useful would you be?
Sure, you can efficiently allocate coconuts...but that's about it.
Actually money shouldn't be the driving force why many people want to become doctors. It is way deeper than that and also doctors make that much during residency while they are practicing! after that they make at least $100,000 starting( general MD's) and surgeons and anesthesiologists make more!
not neccesariily, my dad is a specialized doctor, a neontaologist and makes 800k a year. yes he did get paid a small amount during residency, but later it is worth it.
Seriously, it's sad but true. I'd respect you and your advice more if you were Caucasian due only to the fact that it's harder to get in if you're white. Don't get me wrong you seem like a bright guy, but this whole affirmative action bullshit is just stupid. If you're given advantages according to the color of your skin people are going to resent you for it, there's no escaping it. Completely counter intuitive but the stupid system still persists, it's fucking bullshit.
Easier to get in!! Please. I am a MS2 and my medical school class was 360. Yet only 23 were African American. Do you think that only 23 African Americans applied to that Medcial school that year? You are obviuosly not a medical student not even close. You need to open your eyes and stop being so Naive. We need minority doctors becasue who else is going to practice in the inner city. Not you our yours.
one of the best things on your app is that you are a minority. being a minority will help more than mcat scores or gpa. i was accepted to three schools when my caucasian buddies (with better stats) coudlnt' even get an interview.
Hi Ohmssoo7, how did you come across this Stewart University. Do u know anybody currently attending it? I've bee to there website and researched there program, it kinda looks phony to me. But I could be wrong. Pls tell me more.
Well I did do a search on youtube and it seems to me that your ass is the student body president, the user name "newmedstudent" sound familiar yo, don't act like another person. How come you guys don't have a real address instead a postal mail address. There is not a single pic of the actual campus. I even used goggle earth to search the existence of the school and can't find shit. YO QUIT PLAYIN U MIGHT GET IN TROUBLE!!
Dude, I am a well educated man working on ma master degree in Biomechanical, I just love the field of medicine. So whats wrong with ma english? I would hit California tomorrow to confirm this school if I can get the real address u feel me. Besides I replied a massage to Ohmssoo7 and not your ass or is that you with a different name.
In all fairness, tell me what gripe do you about this school? Do you know anything about it? Have you talked to the students? Or the administration? Do you know what it takes to start a medical school here in the US?
How can I talk to students and faculty when there is no way to contact them sir. Ok, give me the street address to the school main campus so I pay a visit since its not an online med school. My mind is open son thats why I am so curious.
First off, the campus is on federal property so they will not let you in. Federal property means its controlled by the government. Second, do you have the pre-reqs? What was your major? Third show some respect to Americas finest. Fourth, if this was a scam do you honestly think that people of the armed forces would be showing there names? Do you think that the federal government would let a school run that was scamming students out of their money?
The people that are against this school are medical schools because of money and caribbean schools. Why do students have to travel thousands of miles away to schools located on islands when they can do it here? All schools have to start somewhere. I encourage you to talk to the administration, look hard, and look deep. Ask questions beyond your satisfaction.
Fed property, controlled by the fed, would not let you in..bullshit! you are telling me that I need to be accepted before seeing the school? Yes I got a the requirements for med sch. I graduate next fall with biomechanics(M.S). So how come they charge by pay pay only?
It is not suppose to be easy. If it were easy, then everyone that says they want to be a doctor would get into med school. But what sets you apart from the "talkers" is the fact that you're willing to do whatever it takes. Don't lose sight of the fact that not everyone that gets in got a 30. The only equalizer is effort. Ask yourself this: So many ppl before you have gotten past this hurdle and they're not exactly geniuses, so why not you? Naija forever!
I would say you would need at least a 30 on the MCAT? The average here in Canada is above 30... but of course there are many other factors in your medical school application...
