Been using this for 5 years, Rolf always keeps it up to date. i have Transcribe! as well, good but different. ASD is easier to use, Transcribe allows use of any video, good for Youtube clips. ASD has great tech support, Transcribe! doesn't respond well to email. Get both, but get ASD first.
This is a great piece of software - using it for 6 months - runs fine on the Mac- Ioops and pitch control as well as tempo control really useful when playing alto sax piece on tenor for instance. Not free but someone has put a lot of work into this and for me and my saxes it's just the job and I don't begrudge paying for it. I have limited musical talent and this is a real help - now playing pieces I could never figure out before.
Purchase the full version or... download the free trial version. If you have some sort of music editing/recording software (Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools etc.) import the the song you want to open with ASD into your editing software, chop the parts from the track you don't want, drag the part you do want (guitar solo) to the first bar. If your solo is 30 seconds, bounce a track with at least an extra 90sec of silence on the end and open that file in ASD, badabing, you can slow your whole solo down.
This is definitely the one to get if you want to learn fast leads or fast and complex fingerpicking....Audacity seems to be quite a bit more than that.
@paulvienneau I've been using ASD for a long time and haven't upgraded in quite a while. The free trial version is only good for 30 days now? It used to be good for as long as you wanted it, but had playback restrictions that went away when you unlocked it for the fee. I'll have to revisit the website. I use it a lot and recommend it to all of my students.
This is much much better. You can control how slow you want to go, you can loop the part and it plays it over and over non-stop PLUS you can save the clipped part at the slowed down speed for practice. This is good for getting difficult solos up to speed. You can learn the solo first, practice it at any percent down to 20% and then work your way up to whatever speed you can, even double the original. Try that with Media Player! :)

yep just as i thought...
ok firstly the WMP one chops up the sound pretty badly and is not usable at all for musos wanting to slow down difficult licks
and it only has one speed that you can slow it down to, this program lets you choose
also it doesnt read off the CD
this program is far superior
