There actually is no such thing as 'hunter/jumper'. When that term is used, it's usually used with barns that both do hunters and jumpers, shows that have hunter classes and jumper classes, or horses that are marketed as being able to do both hunters and jumpers. The term 'hunter/jumper' is often used in the English horse world because most hunter shows offer jumper classes. There is no such style though as 'hunter/jumper'.

Hunters are judged mostly on way of going, and are very biased. One judge my love your horse or pony, and the next may hate it. There are three main points hunters are judged on: equitation (way you look and quality of position), how well your horse moves and jumps, and how well you and horse work as a pair (would the judge want to ride your horse?).

Jumpers are all about speed and power. There are two types of classes usually: speed/accumulator and power/speed.

In jumpers, you are given a course and try to ride the course efficiently with fastest time. It has nothing to do with way of going or position. Just have the fastest time.

In hunters, usually, if you have the money (which can usually be in the 6 figures) to buy the best horse/pony, you'll win. In my opinion, to be honest, jumpers takes a bit more skill. :]
